Chapter 5: The Butler Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 5: The Butler Who Knew Too Much

The silence between Alessandro Moretti and Mr. Harrison felt heavier than the storm outside.

For thirty years…

Mr. Harrison had been more than a butler.

He had been a shadow inside the Moretti mansion.

He knew every hallway.

Every locked door.

Every family secret.

He knew where Alessandro kept his private documents.

He knew which rooms were never entered.

He knew the memories this family tried to forget.

And now…

For the first time…

The man who had always seemed unbreakable looked afraid.

Alessandro stared at him.

Nobody else in the room dared to move.

Even Vanessa, who had spent the last hour fighting to save herself, stood completely silent.

Because everyone understood something.

A powerful man like Alessandro Moretti could survive enemies outside his walls.

But betrayal from inside?

That was different.

“Mr. Harrison.”

Alessandro’s voice was quiet.

Almost too quiet.

The old butler lifted his head.

“Yes, sir.”

The answer was respectful.

Professional.

The same way he had answered for decades.

But tonight, something had changed.

Tonight, Alessandro heard the hesitation.

“Did you know Adrian was alive?”

The question hung in the air.

Mr. Harrison didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Alessandro’s expression hardened.

“Answer me.”

The old man looked down.

“Yes.”

The word landed like an explosion.

I heard someone behind me gasp.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Even the security guards looked shocked.

Alessandro didn’t react.

At least not visibly.

“How long?”

Mr. Harrison swallowed.

“Five years.”

A strange sound escaped Alessandro.

Not a laugh.

Not anger.

Something between disbelief and pain.

“Five years.”

He repeated the words slowly.

“You knew my brother was alive for five years.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me bury him.”

Mr. Harrison’s eyes became wet.

“I had no choice.”

The moment he said those words…

The entire room changed.

Because those were the same words Vanessa had used.

And Alessandro hated them.

“No choice.”

He stepped closer.

“Everyone says that when they betray someone.”

Mr. Harrison looked at him.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Alessandro’s eyes sharpened.

“Protect me?”

“Yes.”

“By lying to me?”

The old butler looked away.

“By keeping you alive.”

Nobody spoke.

I felt a chill move through me.

Because suddenly, the question wasn’t whether Mr. Harrison had betrayed Alessandro.

It was why.

“What happened that night?”

Alessandro asked.

“The night my father died.”

Mr. Harrison remained silent.

“Tell me.”

The old man looked toward the empty ballroom.

Almost like he was seeing another time.

Another night.

Another tragedy.

“Your father discovered something.”

“What?”

“A betrayal.”

Alessandro’s face became colder.

“From who?”

Mr. Harrison hesitated.

And that hesitation was dangerous.

“From someone inside the family.”

Vanessa whispered:

“Adrian?”

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head quickly.

“No.”

She looked terrified.

“Not Adrian.”

Alessandro turned.

“Then who?”

Nobody answered.

The security chief stepped forward.

“Sir, we should move this conversation somewhere private.”

“No.”

Alessandro’s voice stopped him.

“Everyone stays.”

He looked around the room.

“Everyone hears.”

The old butler closed his eyes.

He knew there was no escaping anymore.

“I was there that night.”

The room became silent.

“Where?”

“At the church.”

Alessandro froze.

“The night my father was murdered?”

Mr. Harrison nodded.

“Yes.”

I saw something change in Alessandro’s face.

Because for years, he had believed only two people knew what happened.

The killer.

And the victim.

But now…

Someone else had been there.

“You told me you arrived after.”

“I lied.”

The words were almost impossible to hear.

“I arrived before.”

Alessandro stared at him.

“Why?”

Mr. Harrison’s voice broke.

“Because your father called me.”

“About what?”

“He knew someone was planning to destroy the family.”

The rain outside became louder.

“He told me if anything happened to him…”

The butler paused.

“I had to protect his sons.”

Alessandro looked away.

For a moment, he looked younger.

Not like an empire leader.

Not like the man everyone feared.

Just a son who had lost his father.

“And you protected Adrian.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mr. Harrison looked at him.

“Because Adrian was the target.”

That answer shocked everyone.

“What?”

Alessandro turned.

Mr. Harrison continued.

“Your father wasn’t killed because he was powerful.”

“He was killed because someone wanted Adrian gone.”

Silence.

I looked at Alessandro.

He seemed frozen.

“My brother?”

“Yes.”

“Why would anyone want him dead?”

Mr. Harrison lowered his voice.

“Because Adrian found the truth.”

“What truth?”

The old man looked around.

Then at me.

My heart tightened.

Why was he looking at me?

“What?”

I whispered.

Mr. Harrison looked away.

“Your husband.”

Everything inside me stopped.

Daniel.

Again.

His name.

His death.

His secret.

“What about my husband?”

Mr. Harrison took a deep breath.

“Daniel Carter was not just a construction worker.”

My hands became cold.

“He was investigating something.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

I looked at Alessandro.

“I knew my husband.”

But even as I said it…

A small part of me remembered.

The late nights.

The phone calls he refused to explain.

The folders hidden beneath the bed.

The way he always checked the windows before speaking.

Mr. Harrison continued.

“Daniel discovered documents connected to the Moretti family.”

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.

“What documents?”

“Financial records.”

“From where?”

“The company that owned the waterfront project.”

The same project where Daniel died.

My breathing became uneven.

“He was going to expose someone.”

“Who?”

Mr. Harrison looked at Alessandro.

“That is what Adrian was trying to discover.”

The room became completely silent.

Then Alessandro spoke.

“Why did nobody tell me?”

Mr. Harrison looked devastated.

“Because your father left instructions.”

“What instructions?”

The old butler reached inside his jacket.

Every guard reacted instantly.

But he slowly pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Yellowed by time.

Alessandro stared at it.

“What is that?”

Mr. Harrison looked at him.

“A letter from your father.”

Alessandro didn’t move.

“He told me to give this to you only when the truth could no longer stay hidden.”

A long pause.

“And tonight…”

Mr. Harrison looked around the ballroom.

“Tonight, it cannot.”

Alessandro took the envelope.

His fingers tightened around it.

For several seconds, he didn’t open it.

Almost like he was afraid of what was inside.

Then he broke the seal.

The room watched as he unfolded the paper.

His eyes moved across the first line.

Then the second.

Then the third.

And suddenly…

All the anger disappeared from his face.

Replaced by something worse.

Shock.

He looked up.

His voice was barely audible.

“My father knew.”

Nobody spoke.

“He knew who betrayed him.”

Mr. Harrison lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Alessandro looked back at the letter.

Then he read the final sentence.

And whatever he saw…

Changed everything.

Because the most powerful man in the room whispered four words:

“No…”

He looked at the people around him.

“The traitor…”

His voice cracked.

“Was my mother.”

The ballroom went silent.

And somewhere inside the Moretti mansion…

A hidden alarm began to ring.
