Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Box

Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Box

The silence after Alessandro Moretti read the documents was heavier than any accusation.

No one whispered.

No one moved.

Even the rain outside seemed to have slowed, as if the storm itself was waiting to hear what happened next.

I stood near the marble column with Emma in my arms, watching the most powerful man in the room hold a simple folder like it weighed more than his entire empire.

Alessandro had faced criminals.

Politicians.

Business rivals.

Men who had threatened his life.

But I had never seen him look like this.

Not afraid.

Not angry.

Something much deeper.

Hurt.

Vanessa noticed it too.

Her perfect expression began to crack.

“Alessandro…”

She stepped closer.

“I know how this looks.”

He didn’t answer.

That made her panic.

Because people like Vanessa knew how to handle anger.

They knew how to fight accusations.

They knew how to manipulate emotions.

But silence?

Silence gave them nothing to control.

She reached for his arm.

He moved away before she touched him.

The movement was small.

Almost invisible.

But the entire ballroom saw it.

And everyone understood.

The woman who had walked into the mansion believing she was about to become the queen of the Moretti empire was suddenly standing alone.

“What are those documents?” one guest whispered.

Another answered.

“I don’t know.”

“But something is wrong.”

The whispers spread like fire.

Vanessa turned toward the crowd.

“Everyone needs to calm down.”

Her voice became louder.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

But nobody was looking at her anymore.

They were looking at Alessandro.

Because in that room, his reaction mattered more than her explanation.

Alessandro closed the folder.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like he was controlling every emotion trying to escape.

“Everyone leaves.”

The room froze.

Vanessa stared at him.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

His voice was calm.

“Everyone leaves.”

“But this is an engagement celebration.”

“No.”

His eyes moved toward the crystal decorations.

The flowers.

The champagne.

The entire performance Vanessa had created.

“This stopped being a celebration a long time ago.”

The guests began moving.

Some looked disappointed.

Some looked frightened.

Some looked excited.

Because wealthy people loved secrets.

Especially when those secrets belonged to someone more powerful than themselves.

The senators left quietly.

The executives followed.

The socialites whispered behind their hands.

Within minutes, the ballroom that had been filled with three hundred people became almost empty.

Only a few remained.

His security team.

Vanessa.

Me.

Emma.

And Alessandro.

I immediately felt like I didn’t belong.

I pulled Emma closer.

“Sir, I should take my daughter upstairs.”

Alessandro looked at me.

For a moment, I expected him to say yes.

To remind me of my place.

Instead, he said:

“Stay.”

One word.

But it changed everything.

Vanessa looked at him sharply.

“She stays?”

“Yes.”

“She is the reason this entire disaster happened.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“You are.”

Vanessa’s face lost color.

I looked down at Emma.

She was exhausted.

Her small head rested against my shoulder.

She didn’t understand the war happening around her.

She only knew adults were upset.

And that broke my heart.

Alessandro noticed.

His expression softened for a moment.

“Is she still sick?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“How high was her fever?”

I hesitated.

“Almost one hundred and two last night.”

Something changed in his eyes.

Concern.

Real concern.

“Why didn’t you call the doctor?”

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe he was asking.

“Because I don’t have a family doctor, Mr. Moretti.”

The words came out quietly.

“And because emergency rooms cost money.”

The room became silent again.

Alessandro stared at me.

Not with pity.

Something else.

Recognition.

Like he was seeing parts of my life he had never bothered to notice.

“I thought you had everything you needed here.”

I looked away.

“I have a job, sir.”

The truth was simple.

“I don’t have security.”

“I don’t have wealth.”

“I don’t have people protecting me.”

“I have a daughter.”

“And I have to make sure she survives.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa interrupted.

“Are we really doing this?”

Everyone turned.

She looked angry now.

The tears were gone.

“I cannot believe you are allowing this woman to manipulate you.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Manipulate me?”

“Yes.”

She pointed at me.

“She found an opportunity and used her child.”

My entire body went cold.

Before I could answer, Alessandro spoke.

“Be careful.”

His voice was quiet.

But dangerous.

Vanessa stopped.

Because she knew that tone.

Everyone knew that tone.

Alessandro continued.

“You are accusing a mother of using her sick child.”

His eyes hardened.

“While we are standing here because you lied about carrying mine.”

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time…

She had no immediate response.

The security chief stepped forward.

“Mr. Moretti.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“There is another issue.”

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward him.

“What issue?”

The security chief opened another file.

“When we searched Miss Cole’s suite…”

He paused.

“We found multiple items.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

“What items?”

“Receipts.”

“For what?”

The security chief looked down.

“Pregnancy-related products.”

Nobody spoke.

“Different stores.”

“Different names.”

“Different dates.”

Vanessa’s breathing became faster.

“And?”

Alessandro asked.

The security chief hesitated.

Then he said:

“And there were instructions.”

“What instructions?”

The man handed him another paper.

“Instructions for creating the appearance of pregnancy.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Vanessa looked like someone had removed the ground beneath her feet.

“That’s impossible.”

Her voice was weak.

“I never saw those.”

The security chief looked confused.

“You never saw your own documents?”

A mistake.

A tiny mistake.

But everyone heard it.

Alessandro heard it.

Vanessa realized too late.

She closed her mouth.

But the damage was already done.

Alessandro walked toward her.

Slowly.

“Who helped you?”

She shook her head.

“No one.”

“Don’t lie.”

“I’m not.”

He stopped in front of her.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

“You prepared everything.”

“No.”

“You purchased fake medical supplies.”

“No.”

“You created a false pregnancy.”

His voice lowered.

“Why?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears again.

But this time…

Nobody believed them.

“I was scared.”

The answer surprised everyone.

Alessandro stared at her.

“Scared of what?”

She looked at him.

And for the first time…

Her expression wasn’t arrogant.

It was desperate.

“Losing you.”

A long silence followed.

Then she said something that changed the entire direction of the night.

“You don’t understand.”

Her voice shook.

“You were never the only person who knew about this.”

Alessandro narrowed his eyes.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa looked toward the security team.

Then toward me.

Then back at him.

“There is someone else involved.”

The room became colder.

“Who?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I don’t know if I should tell you.”

Alessandro stepped closer.

“You have five seconds.”

She looked terrified.

Not of him.

Of what would happen if she spoke.

Finally…

She whispered:

“Your family.”

Nobody moved.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew one thing.

A fake pregnancy was a lie.

But a secret involving the Moretti family…

Was something much more dangerous.

Alessandro’s face became unreadable.

“Which member of my family?”

Vanessa looked at him.

And said the name that made the entire room go silent.

“Your brother.”

The lights flickered.

Thunder shook the mansion.

And for the first time that night…

Alessandro Moretti looked genuinely shocked.

Because everyone knew one thing.

His brother had been dead for five years.

May you like

Or at least…

That was what the world believed.
