Chapter 6: The Mother’s Hidden Sin

Chapter 6: The Mother’s Hidden Sin

The alarm echoed through the Moretti mansion.
A sharp, repeating sound.
Cold.
Mechanical.
Unforgiving.
Everyone looked toward the security system.
But Alessandro Moretti didn’t move.
He was still holding the letter.
His father’s final words.
The truth he had spent fifteen years searching for.
And the name he never expected to see.
His mother.
I watched him carefully.
Not because I knew him well.
I didn’t.
I was only the woman who cleaned his rooms.
The woman who replaced flowers in his office.
The woman who disappeared when important guests arrived.
But after three years inside that mansion, I had learned something.
Alessandro Moretti was not a man who broke easily.
He could stand in front of enemies without blinking.
He could negotiate millions of dollars without raising his voice.
He could walk through rooms filled with dangerous people and make everyone else feel powerless.
But this…
This was different.
This was family.
“Your mother?”
Vanessa whispered.
Nobody answered.
Alessandro’s eyes remained fixed on the letter.
The paper trembled slightly in his hand.
Only slightly.
But everyone noticed.
“Sir…”
The security chief stepped closer.
“Are you all right?”
Alessandro folded the letter.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like he was trying to put his emotions back where they belonged.
“Lock the entire estate.”
The security chief immediately nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
“No one enters.”
“Yes, sir.”
“No one leaves.”
The words sent a wave of fear through the room.
Because Alessandro Moretti did not make decisions like that without reason.
He turned toward Mr. Harrison.
“Tell me everything.”
The old butler lowered his eyes.
“I should have told you years ago.”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“You should have.”
The guilt on Mr. Harrison’s face was obvious.
“I was afraid.”
Alessandro stared at him.
“Of what?”
“That the truth would destroy you.”
A bitter smile appeared on Alessandro’s face.
“You protected me from the truth.”
His voice became colder.
“But you allowed me to live inside a lie.”
Mr. Harrison had no answer.
Because there was no answer.
I looked at Emma.
She was falling asleep against my shoulder.
She had no idea what kind of storm surrounded us.
I whispered:
“Mr. Moretti…”
Everyone turned.
I immediately regretted speaking.
But I continued.
“My daughter needs medicine.”
The room became quiet.
Because even in the middle of an empire collapsing…
A sick child was still a sick child.
Alessandro looked at Emma.
His expression softened.
Only for a moment.
Then he looked at his security team.
“Call the doctor.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And prepare a room.”
I blinked.
“A room?”
“Yes.”
“I can take her home.”
Alessandro looked at me.
“No.”
His answer was firm.
Not cruel.
Protective.
“Not tonight.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
His eyes moved around the mansion.
“Because someone inside this house has been hiding secrets for years.”
A pause.
“And now they know you helped expose one.”
My heart tightened.
He was right.
The moment Emma spoke about the pillow…
We became part of something dangerous.
I looked down at her.
My little girl.
The child who accidentally opened the door to a war between powerful people.
“Fine.”
I whispered.
“But I stay with her.”
Alessandro nodded.
“Of course.”
Something about that answer surprised me.
Because there was no arrogance.
No command.
Just understanding.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“You’re really going to trust them?”
Everyone turned.
She looked at me.
“The maid?”
Her voice was bitter.
“After everything?”
Alessandro’s eyes moved toward her.
“You are not in a position to question trust.”
Her face tightened.
“I made a mistake.”
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“You made a choice.”
She looked away.
“I loved you.”
Alessandro didn’t respond.
“You don’t believe that?”
“I believe you wanted what I represented.”
The words hurt her.
Because they were true.
She had fallen in love with the empire.
Not the man.
Alessandro looked back at the letter.
“My mother.”
The words were almost a whisper.
“What did she do?”
Mr. Harrison took a deep breath.
“Your mother was involved with your father’s business.”
“Everyone knew that.”
“No.”
The butler shook his head.
“Not everything.”
The room waited.
“She was secretly moving money.”
Alessandro’s expression changed.
“How much?”
“Millions.”
“Why?”
Mr. Harrison hesitated.
“Because she believed the Moretti empire belonged to her.”
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“She didn’t want your father to give control to you.”
Alessandro stared.
“My father was going to name me successor?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Six months before his death.”
The answer explained something.
A motive.
A reason.
But not everything.
“Did she kill him?”
Nobody moved.
Mr. Harrison looked down.
“I don’t know.”
That answer angered Alessandro more than a confession.
“You don’t know?”
“I know she was there.”
The room went silent.
“What?”
Mr. Harrison continued.
“Your mother arrived at the church before your father.”
Alessandro’s face changed.
“And?”
“She left ten minutes before the shooting.”
Silence.
“Why?”
“I never found out.”
The security chief suddenly interrupted.
“Sir.”
Everyone turned.
He was holding a tablet.
“We found something.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“What?”
“The mansion cameras.”
“What about them?”
“Someone accessed the system tonight.”
The room became tense.
“When?”
“Twenty minutes before Miss Cole announced the pregnancy.”
Alessandro narrowed his eyes.
“Who?”
The security chief hesitated.
Then looked at me.
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
The man quickly shook his head.
“No, not you.”
He turned the tablet.
“The access code belonged to someone else.”
Alessandro looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Impossible.”
“What is it?”
The security chief swallowed.
“The code was registered under…”
A pause.
“Mrs. Isabella Moretti.”
Nobody spoke.
Alessandro’s mother.
The woman who had supposedly betrayed his father.
The woman who had died seven years earlier.
The woman who should have had no access to anything.
Alessandro took the tablet.
His eyes moved across the screen.
Then suddenly…
The mansion lights shut off.
Again.
Darkness swallowed the ballroom.
A second later…
The old intercom system turned on.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
A voice everyone recognized.
A voice that should have been impossible.
“Alessandro…”
The entire room froze.
The voice continued.
“My son.”
The letter slipped from Alessandro’s hand.
Because the dead woman was speaking.
“I know you finally found the truth.”
A pause.
“But you still don’t know the whole story.”
Thunder shook the mansion.
Then the voice whispered:
“Your father wasn’t killed because of what he discovered.”
Silence.
“He was killed because he discovered who you really are.”
The intercom went dead.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
And Alessandro Moretti…
The man who had controlled an empire…
May you like
Was standing in the dark, facing the one mystery he had never prepared for.
The truth about himself.
