Chapter 10: The Necklace That Held the Truth

Chapter 10: The Necklace That Held the Truth

For three years…

I had believed the necklace around Emma’s neck was the last gift from her father.

A memory.

A piece of Daniel that I could never replace.

I remembered the night he gave it to her.

It was only a week before he died.

Emma had been so small.

Barely two years old.

She was sitting on his lap while he tried to convince her that eating vegetables was a heroic mission.

She had laughed.

He had laughed.

For one evening…

The world felt normal.

Before the fear.

Before the phone calls.

Before the secrets.

Before I became a single mother trying to survive.

Daniel had placed the necklace around Emma’s neck.

“Keep this safe, princess.”

I remembered smiling.

“Daniel, she’s too young to understand jewelry.”

He had looked at me seriously.

“It’s not about the necklace.”

At the time, I thought he was being sentimental.

I thought he was just a father who wanted to leave something meaningful behind.

I never imagined he was leaving behind evidence.

A secret.

A truth powerful enough to destroy an empire.

My hand trembled as I touched the small silver pendant.

Emma noticed.

“Mama?”

She looked down.

“Is my necklace broken?”

I immediately shook my head.

“No, sweetheart.”

I forced a smile.

“It’s okay.”

But it wasn’t.

Nothing was okay anymore.

Alessandro stared at the necklace.

Then he looked at me.

“May I see it?”

The question surprised me.

Not the command.

A question.

I nodded slowly.

I carefully lifted the chain from around Emma’s neck.

She watched everyone with sleepy confusion.

The same little girl who had exposed a fake pregnancy was now holding the key to a fifteen-year-old mystery.

I handed the necklace to Alessandro.

The moment it touched his palm…

His expression changed.

Not because of the pendant.

Because of the symbol engraved on it.

Mr. Harrison stepped closer.

His face turned pale.

“No.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“You recognize it.”

The old butler stared.

“I haven’t seen that symbol in years.”

“What is it?”

Mr. Harrison swallowed.

“The Carter mark.”

The room became silent.

I frowned.

“The Carter mark?”

Adrian’s voice came through the speakers.

“Yes.”

Everyone looked up.

“The Carter family had a history long before Daniel worked in construction.”

I stared at the screen.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian answered:

“Daniel wasn’t just investigating the Moretti empire.”

A pause.

“He was investigating his own family.”

The words made no sense.

“My husband?”

“Yes.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at Emma.

“No, Daniel never said anything.”

Adrian’s expression softened.

“Because he was protecting you.”

Alessandro held the necklace carefully.

“What is inside?”

Nobody answered.

Then Isabella spoke.

“Open it.”

Everyone turned.

She looked at the pendant.

“Daniel knew someone would eventually find it.”

Alessandro examined the small silver piece.

“There’s no opening.”

“There is.”

Isabella stepped closer.

“The bottom.”

Alessandro turned it over.

At first, nothing happened.

Then he noticed something.

A tiny line.

Almost invisible.

He pressed it.

The pendant opened.

Inside was a small compartment.

Empty.

Everyone froze.

“It’s gone.”

Alessandro looked at Isabella.

“What was inside?”

She didn’t answer.

“What was inside?”

Her face became serious.

“A memory card.”

Silence.

My heart dropped.

“A memory card?”

“Yes.”

“What was on it?”

Isabella looked toward Adrian.

Adrian answered.

“Proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“The person who ordered your father’s murder.”

The room went silent.

Alessandro’s grip tightened.

“Then where is it?”

Nobody answered.

I looked down at Emma.

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“What if Daniel removed it?”

Adrian shook his head.

“He didn’t.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he contacted me.”

Everyone froze.

Alessandro looked at the screen.

“You spoke to Daniel?”

Adrian nodded.

“Three days before he died.”

My breath stopped.

“You knew my husband?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian looked away.

“Because Daniel found me first.”

The room became colder.

“He knew I was alive.”

Alessandro stared.

“Why would he trust you?”

“Because we had the same enemy.”

A pause.

“The same person who killed your father.”

The words settled heavily.

I felt dizzy.

Too many secrets.

Too many names.

Too many years of lies.

“Where is the memory card now?”

Adrian looked at me.

My stomach tightened.

“Why are you looking at me?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Because Daniel didn’t hide it in the necklace.”

Everyone became still.

“What?”

“He hid the location.”

My hands went cold.

“Where?”

Adrian looked at Emma.

“Somewhere only you would know.”

I looked confused.

“I don’t understand.”

Adrian sighed.

“Daniel knew you would never trust powerful people.”

A pause.

“He knew you would never give the necklace to anyone.”

Another pause.

“So he left a message.”

“A message where?”

Adrian looked toward the necklace.

“Inside Emma’s memory.”

I froze.

“What does that mean?”

Alessandro looked at Adrian.

“Explain.”

Adrian said:

“Daniel recorded a video.”

My breathing stopped.

“Where?”

“Hidden.”

“Where?”

Adrian’s answer came quietly.

“Inside the necklace.”

Everyone stared.

“But it’s empty.”

Adrian nodded.

“Because the necklace only opens after entering a code.”

I looked at him.

“What code?”

Nobody spoke.

Then Isabella looked at Emma.

And whispered:

“Her birthday.”

My entire body froze.

Emma’s birthday.

The day Daniel became a father.

The day he said his life changed forever.

I entered the date slowly.

The pendant clicked.

A tiny hidden section opened beneath the silver layer.

Inside…

Was a small piece of black technology.

Not a memory card.

Something smaller.

Newer.

Alessandro looked at it.

“What is that?”

Adrian answered.

“A storage chip.”

The security chief immediately moved forward.

“I can access it.”

Alessandro nodded.

The man connected it to a secure device.

Everyone waited.

Seconds passed.

Then the screen displayed one file.

One video.

Created three years earlier.

The title appeared.

Everyone read it.

FOR EMMA — WHEN THE TRUTH COMES OUT

My knees almost gave out.

Daniel had known.

He knew he might not survive.

He knew someone would come looking.

He knew one day Emma would need to know why.

The video opened.

Daniel appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

My hand covered my mouth.

Because after three years…

I saw my husband again.

“Mama…”

Emma whispered.

“Is that Daddy?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because I was crying.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this…”

He paused.

“Then I didn’t make it home.”

The room went silent.

His voice continued.

“I’m sorry.”

A tear fell from my face.

“I tried to protect you both.”

Daniel looked down.

Then back at the camera.

“But there’s something you need to know.”

A pause.

“The person who destroyed my life…”

Another pause.

“The person who destroyed the Moretti family…”

His expression became serious.

“Is not who you think.”

The screen flickered.

Then Daniel spoke the words that changed everything.

“Alessandro Moretti…”

Everyone froze.

“Your father’s killer is someone you have trusted your entire life.”

The video paused.

Then a final message appeared.

A name.

A name nobody expected.

A name that made Alessandro step backward.

Because the person Daniel accused…

Was standing inside the Moretti mansion.

May you like

And everyone knew him.

Mr. Harrison.
