Chapter 8: The Man in the Photograph

Chapter 8: The Man in the Photograph

The photograph arrived in Alessandro Moretti’s hands five minutes later.

Five minutes.

That was all it took for an entire lifetime of certainty to collapse.

I watched from the edge of the ballroom as the security chief placed the old photograph on the table.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody dared.

The picture was faded.

The corners were worn.

The kind of photograph that had survived years hidden away from the world.

Alessandro stared at it.

His face was unreadable.

But his silence told the story.

The photograph showed three people.

His father.

His mother.

And another man standing between them.

A man nobody recognized.

Except Alessandro.

Because the moment his eyes reached the third person…

His entire body went still.

“No.”

The word escaped him.

Barely a whisper.

Mr. Harrison stepped closer.

“Sir?”

Alessandro picked up the photograph.

His fingers tightened around the edges.

“No.”

He said it again.

Louder.

“This is impossible.”

Nobody moved.

I looked at the picture from where I stood.

I couldn’t see the details clearly.

But I could see Alessandro’s reaction.

And I had never seen anything affect him like this.

Not the fake pregnancy.

Not Adrian’s return.

Not the betrayal.

This was something else.

Something personal.

“Who is he?”

The security chief asked carefully.

Alessandro didn’t answer.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You know him.”

Alessandro ignored her.

His eyes stayed on the photograph.

Finally…

He spoke.

“My father’s closest friend.”

The room became quiet.

“What was his name?”

Mr. Harrison asked.

Alessandro swallowed.

“Marcus Vale.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to everyone else.

The old butler’s face changed.

“No…”

Alessandro looked at him.

“You know him?”

Mr. Harrison looked terrified.

“He disappeared.”

“When?”

“Before your father died.”

A cold silence spread through the room.

Alessandro looked back at the photograph.

“So my father’s friend disappeared…”

A pause.

“And now I find a picture of him with my mother.”

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

There were too many secrets.

Too many lies.

Too many people who had known the truth while Alessandro lived inside a carefully created illusion.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Adrian knew about Marcus.”

Everyone looked at her.

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

She hesitated.

“He told me.”

“When?”

“Before tonight.”

“How long?”

Vanessa looked away.

“Months.”

The anger returned.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

“You knew about this.”

“I knew pieces.”

“You knew my brother was alive.”

“Yes.”

“You knew someone was investigating my family.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Marcus Vale.”

She said nothing.

That was an answer.

Alessandro stepped closer.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

But this time, Alessandro didn’t soften.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That if I told you…”

She stopped.

“Tell me.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You would never look at me the same way again.”

The silence afterward was painful.

Because she was right.

But not for the reason she thought.

Alessandro didn’t hate her because she knew secrets.

He hated her because she chose to use them.

“You weren’t afraid of losing me.”

His voice was cold.

“You were afraid of losing the life you built around me.”

Vanessa looked down.

No answer.

Because again…

He was right.

A sound came from Emma.

She coughed.

Immediately, my attention shifted.

I touched her forehead.

Still warm.

Alessandro noticed.

“Doctor?”

The security chief nodded.

“On the way.”

“Make it faster.”

“Yes, sir.”

I looked at him.

“You don’t have to do that.”

He looked confused.

“Do what?”

“Act like you’re responsible for us.”

Something moved in his eyes.

“I am responsible.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I lowered my voice.

“I work for you.”

His expression changed.

“That doesn’t mean you don’t matter.”

The words surprised me.

Because powerful people often forgot the difference between employees and people.

But Alessandro didn’t say it like a billionaire trying to be kind.

He said it like someone who had just realized how many people around him had been invisible.

Then the security system suddenly beeped.

Everyone turned.

The security chief looked at his tablet.

“What is it?”

His face changed.

“Movement detected.”

“Where?”

The man looked up.

“The east wing.”

Alessandro immediately turned.

“Adrian?”

“No.”

The security chief shook his head.

“Someone else.”

“How many?”

“One person.”

“Identify them.”

The security chief stared at the screen.

Then his expression became confused.

“That’s impossible.”

Alessandro walked toward him.

“What?”

The man turned the tablet around.

The camera showed the east hallway.

A woman walking slowly through the darkness.

Older.

Elegant.

Familiar.

Everyone froze.

Because she wasn’t hiding.

She wasn’t running.

She was walking directly toward them.

The camera zoomed in.

The image became clearer.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Mr. Harrison stepped backward.

And Alessandro…

Alessandro looked like the world had stopped.

Because the woman on the screen was supposed to be dead.

His mother.

Isabella Moretti.

Alive.

Walking through the mansion.

The same woman whose voice had spoken through the intercom.

The same woman who had supposedly died seven years earlier.

The ballroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

The footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

Slow.

Calm.

Certain.

Then she appeared.

An elegant woman wearing a dark coat.

Silver hair.

Cold eyes.

The woman from the photograph.

The woman from the grave.

She looked directly at Alessandro.

And smiled.

“My son.”

Nobody breathed.

Alessandro stared at her.

His voice was almost impossible to hear.

“You’re dead.”

Isabella tilted her head.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“I was.”

The room went silent.

Then Alessandro asked the only question that mattered.

“Why?”

His mother looked around the ballroom.

At Vanessa.

At Mr. Harrison.

At me.

Then finally…

At Emma.

Her expression changed slightly.

Almost like she recognized something.

“I came back because the truth has finally arrived.”

Alessandro stepped forward.

“You abandoned me.”

Her eyes softened for the first time.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I saved you.”

The words made him stop.

“Saved me?”

“Yes.”

“By pretending to be dead?”

“Yes.”

“By letting me believe everyone I loved was gone?”

Her face became sad.

“Because if you knew the truth…”

A pause.

“You would have died too.”

Nobody spoke.

Then she looked at Alessandro.

“The person who destroyed our family…”

Her voice lowered.

“Is still inside this mansion.”

Everyone froze.

Alessandro looked around.

“Who?”

Isabella didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked directly at me.

At Emma.

And said something that made my blood run cold.

“The child you’re protecting…”

She paused.

“Is the reason they came back.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Alessandro immediately stepped between us.

“Do not involve her.”

Isabella looked at him.

“You don’t understand.”

Her voice became serious.

“Your father’s killer wasn’t searching for the Moretti empire.”

A pause.

“They were searching for Daniel Carter’s daughter.”

The entire room froze.

I looked down at Emma.

My daughter.

My little girl.

And suddenly…

The fake pregnancy.

The secrets.

The murders.

The missing brother.

The hidden family history.

Everything connected to one terrifying truth.

Someone had not been trying to destroy the Moretti empire.

May you like

They had been trying to find my daughter.

And they had finally found her.
