Chapter 8: The Fortress in the Woods

Chapter 8: The Fortress in the Woods

Lightning flashed across the night sky.
For a brief instant, Blackwood Estate emerged from the darkness.
Then it disappeared again.
Emma stared through the helicopter window.
The mansion looked less like a home...
And more like a forgotten castle.
Towering stone walls rose from the forest.
Iron gates stretched nearly twelve feet high.
Ancient oak trees surrounded the property, their twisted branches swaying violently in the storm.
Rain poured over the slate roof in shimmering sheets.
"It's beautiful," Emma whispered.
Harold Benson shook his head.
"It used to be."
Charles Whitmore looked down at the estate.
"When Richard bought this place, it was falling apart."
"I helped him rebuild the western wing."
"He said someday..."
"...his grandchildren would run through those gardens."
His voice faded.
"They never got the chance."
Inside the helicopter, Agent Rebecca Sloan studied the live drone feed.
"Zoom in."
The drone operator obeyed.
The image sharpened.
Three black SUVs had stopped just inside the gates.
The two armored trucks were parked in a defensive formation.
Several armed men spread across the grounds.
One group moved toward the main house.
Another disappeared behind a detached stone building.
"They're organized," Sloan observed.
"Military?"
Charles asked.
She shook her head.
"No."
"But trained."
The operator switched to thermal imaging.
Bright orange figures appeared across the property.
"One..."
"Three..."
"Seven..."
He kept counting.
"...Fourteen."
The cabin fell silent.
"Fourteen armed individuals."
Sloan picked up the radio.
"Ground units are still twelve minutes away."
Charles frowned.
"We'll reach the estate first."
"We're not landing in the middle of that."
Sloan answered.
The pilot nodded.
"I can put us down half a mile north."
"There's an old meadow."
Harold suddenly leaned forward.
"The north meadow..."
Richard intentionally kept a walking trail from there.
"It leads beneath the orchard."
Emma looked at him.
"You've been here?"
"Many times."
Harold smiled sadly.
"Richard trusted very few people."
"I was one of them."
Far below...
Inside the lead SUV...
Cynthia Vale gripped the steering wheel.
Her knuckles had turned white.
Thomas Vale sat silently beside her.
He hadn't spoken for nearly twenty minutes.
Finally...
He broke the silence.
"You've lost control."
Cynthia kept her eyes on the road.
"I know."
"You should have ended this years ago."
"I tried."
Thomas laughed quietly.
"No."
"You managed it."
"But you never ended it."
She slammed the brakes as they reached the mansion.
The gates closed behind them.
One of the armed men hurried over.
"Everything is ready."
Thomas nodded.
"The vault?"
"Still sealed."
"And the backup?"
The guard hesitated.
"We haven't opened it."
Thomas's expression darkened.
"You should have."
The helicopter touched down in the rain-soaked meadow.
Its rotors slowed.
The team climbed out into ankle-deep mud.
Rain drenched them within seconds.
Charles unfolded an old map Harold had kept in his briefcase.
"The orchard is this way."
Harold pointed toward a narrow trail almost hidden beneath overgrown bushes.
"Richard planted these trees himself."
Emma noticed something unusual.
Every tree was perfectly aligned.
Almost...
Too perfectly.
She looked down.
"These aren't random."
Harold smiled.
"They're not."
"They mark something."
Before anyone could ask—
A loud explosion echoed across the valley.
The ground trembled beneath their feet.
Everyone spun toward the estate.
A massive column of orange fire erupted from the eastern wing.
Flames shot through shattered windows.
Black smoke billowed into the rain.
Sloan cursed under her breath.
"They're destroying evidence."
"No."
Harold whispered.
"They're creating a distraction."
Meanwhile...
Inside Blackwood Estate...
Thomas calmly watched the eastern wing burn through a tall window.
One of the guards approached.
"The fire is spreading."
"Good."
Thomas answered.
"Federal agents always run toward flames."
He looked toward Cynthia.
"They'll never notice the tunnel."
Emma, Preston, and the others had no way of hearing those words.
But fate had other plans.
As the explosion echoed through the forest...
Emma instinctively looked in the opposite direction.
Toward the orchard.
Toward the rows of ancient oak trees.
Something didn't feel right.
She walked away from the group.
"Emma!"
Preston called.
She didn't answer.
The brass key in her coat pocket suddenly pressed against her hand.
She reached inside and wrapped her fingers around it.
For a strange moment...
The engraved letter R seemed warm.
Almost as if it had absorbed the heat of her skin.
She stopped beside the oldest oak tree in the orchard.
Lightning flashed again.
For just an instant...
She noticed something carved into the trunk.
A circle.
Inside it...
An oak tree.
The same symbol found on the note in the ballroom.
"Harold!"
She shouted.
He hurried over.
"What is it?"
She pointed.
His eyes widened.
"The Founders' mark."
Emma stepped closer.
The carving wasn't centered.
It was slightly off to one side.
She placed her hand against the bark.
It shifted.
Barely.
She frowned.
"This tree..."
"...isn't a tree."
Everyone stared.
Charles walked over and struck the trunk with the handle of his flashlight.
Thunk.
Not solid wood.
Hollow.
Agent Sloan immediately called two agents forward.
"Pry it open."
They wedged a crowbar into a hidden seam.
With a groan...
Part of the enormous trunk swung outward like a concealed door.
Behind it...
A narrow stone staircase spiraled downward into darkness.
Cold air rushed upward.
Harold's voice was barely audible.
"Richard..."
"You unbelievable genius."
Emma looked down the staircase.
The walls were lined with old lantern brackets.
The steps disappeared into blackness.
Sloan switched on her flashlight.
"No one touches anything."
She turned to the team.
"This tunnel wasn't on any blueprint."
Harold nodded slowly.
"Because Richard drew the blueprints himself."
"He never showed this passage to anyone."
Thomas believed only the main vault existed.
He never knew...
Richard had built a secret way inside.
Just then, one of the agents listening to radio traffic stiffened.
"Agent Sloan."
She looked up.
"What?"
The agent lowered his headset.
"The suspects have started moving."
"Toward the front entrance?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"They're heading underground."
Sloan and Harold exchanged a grim look.
The hidden tunnel...
And the suspects...
Were leading to the exact same destination.
Somewhere beneath Blackwood Estate.
Deep underground...
May you like
Two groups were racing toward a secret that had remained buried for fifteen years.
Only one of them could reach it first.
