Chapter 14: The Last Defense

Chapter 14: The Last Defense

The explosion thundered through the underground vault.
Concrete dust rained from the ceiling.
The steel cabinets blocking the tunnel lurched several inches across the floor.
Emma instinctively covered her head.
Preston pulled her behind Richard's old oak desk.
Agent Rebecca Sloan remained standing.
Her weapon never wavered.
"Hold your positions!"
Federal agents moved with practiced precision.
Two knelt behind the stone pillars.
Another dragged a reinforced evidence case into the center of the room as additional cover.
The tunnel echoed with footsteps.
Heavy.
Deliberate.
Not one person.
Several.
Then a voice called from the darkness.
"Rebecca Sloan."
The chamber fell silent.
Daniel Mercer.
His tone was calm.
Almost friendly.
"You know you can't stop this."
Sloan answered without raising her voice.
"I don't need to."
"I only need to delay you."
Daniel chuckled.
"Long enough for reinforcements?"
"No."
"Long enough for the truth to survive."
Another explosion shook the tunnel.
The ancient stone walls groaned.
Harold looked upward.
"If they keep using explosives..."
"...they'll bury all of us."
Thomas examined the ceiling.
"They won't."
Everyone looked at him.
"This chamber supports the entire estate."
"If it collapses..."
"...the mansion falls with it."
Daniel knew that.
He wasn't trying to destroy the vault.
He was trying to force them out.
Emma glanced toward Richard's television.
The screen remained frozen on the image of Senator William Ashcroft.
His threat echoed in her mind.
"Your family will spend the rest of their lives burying each other."
Richard had recorded everything.
The journal.
The videos.
The bank records.
The recordings.
Fifteen years of carefully preserved evidence.
Daniel couldn't allow any of it to leave this room.
A metallic grinding sound echoed from the entrance.
One of the steel cabinets slowly began sliding backward.
Not from another explosion.
From a hydraulic jack.
"They're pushing through," an agent shouted.
Sloan spoke into her radio.
"Status?"
A voice answered through heavy static.
"State Police are seven minutes out."
Seven minutes.
It sounded like forever.
Charles Whitmore quietly stepped beside Emma.
"Do you still have Richard's key?"
She nodded.
He looked around the chamber.
"Richard always believed every important room should have two exits."
Emma remembered the hidden staircase beneath the oak tree.
"You think there's another passage?"
"I know Richard."
Charles smiled faintly.
"If he built a vault..."
"...he built an escape."
Harold suddenly pointed toward the far wall.
"There."
Behind a row of old engineering blueprints stood an enormous grandfather clock.
Its pendulum had stopped years ago.
Emma frowned.
"A clock?"
Harold nodded.
"Richard collected antique clocks."
"But only one of them..."
"...actually told time."
While agents exchanged fire with the attackers...
Emma, Preston, Harold, and Charles hurried toward the clock.
Bullets struck the stone wall behind them.
Stone fragments scattered across the floor.
Preston shielded Emma with his body.
"You stay behind me."
She looked at him.
"You've said that before."
"This time..."
He smiled sadly.
"I'm actually asking."
Before Emma could answer...
Harold reached inside the grandfather clock.
His fingers searched the wooden frame.
Then—
Click.
The entire clock rotated silently away from the wall.
Behind it...
A narrow steel door.
Charles laughed softly.
"I knew it."
Emma looked at the door.
There was no handle.
Only a keyhole.
Exactly the size of Richard's brass key.
She slowly removed it from her pocket.
"This one?"
Harold nodded.
"It was never just the vault key."
Emma inserted the brass key.
The lock turned smoothly.
A soft mechanical hum echoed behind the wall.
The steel door swung inward.
Beyond it lay another passage.
Unlike the old stone tunnel...
This corridor was lined with electric lights.
Still working.
Still bright.
Harold stared in amazement.
"Richard maintained a backup power system."
Charles shook his head.
"He planned for everything."
Another crash echoed behind them.
The first steel cabinet toppled over.
Daniel's men flooded into the outer chamber.
Agent Sloan fired two controlled shots.
"Fall back!"
Federal agents retreated toward Richard's desk.
They weren't losing.
They were buying time.
Daniel finally stepped into view.
He wore a black raincoat.
His silver hair was damp from the storm.
He wasn't carrying a rifle.
Only a pistol.
He smiled as he surveyed the vault.
"I've waited fifteen years..."
"...to come back here."
His eyes settled on the television screen.
Then on the journal.
Finally...
On Emma.
"You have the key."
Emma didn't answer.
Daniel smiled.
"Richard always did have excellent judgment."
He took another step.
"Emma."
"I know what you're thinking."
"You believe this is about justice."
He shook his head.
"It never was."
"This is about power."
Emma met his gaze.
"No."
"This is about family."
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"Family?"
He laughed quietly.
"Family abandoned me."
Harold stepped forward.
"No."
"You betrayed them."
Daniel looked toward Harold.
"I built Vale Development's financial empire."
"I found every investor."
"I negotiated every acquisition."
"And Richard..."
"...wanted construction workers deciding the company's future."
Charles answered coldly.
"They earned his respect."
"They slowed his profits."
Daniel corrected.
The sound of helicopter rotors suddenly echoed faintly above.
Sloan heard them first.
She smiled.
"Our backup."
Daniel heard them too.
For the first time...
He looked concerned.
He checked his watch.
He was running out of time.
His eyes drifted toward the open escape corridor.
Then back to Emma.
A realization crossed his face.
"You've already found the second exit."
Emma tightened her grip on the brass key.
Daniel sighed.
"So Richard left you a choice."
He slowly lowered his pistol.
To everyone's surprise...
He placed it on the floor.
"I don't want a gunfight."
Sloan frowned.
"What do you want?"
Daniel looked directly at Preston.
"The truth."
Preston stared at him.
"You've lied for twenty years."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
"But there's one lie..."
"...that wasn't mine."
The room became silent.
Daniel slowly reached into his coat pocket.
Every federal agent raised their weapons.
He stopped.
"I wouldn't."
He carefully withdrew...
A faded photograph.
He tossed it across the floor.
It landed at Emma's feet.
She picked it up.
The picture showed Richard.
Cynthia.
A young Preston.
Thomas.
And...
A little girl.
About five years old.
Standing between Richard and Thomas.
Emma frowned.
"Who is she?"
Daniel looked at her.
His voice was almost a whisper.
"The reason Richard built this vault."
Emma turned the photograph over.
On the back, in Richard's handwriting, were six words:
"Find Lily before you judge anyone."
Harold's face went completely white.
Charles staggered backward.
Thomas closed his eyes in shock.
Preston looked from one face to another.
"What..."
"...who's Lily?"
Daniel gave a weary smile.
"You've spent fifteen years searching for the wrong inheritance."
He pointed toward the photograph.
"The greatest secret Richard ever protected..."
"...wasn't money."
"...It was his daughter."
At that exact moment, the hidden corridor behind Emma echoed with the sound of small footsteps.
Everyone turned.
A shadow slowly appeared under the bright lights.
Then a woman's voice, trembling with emotion, called into the chamber:
May you like
"Preston..."
"I've finally come home."
