Chapter 10: Richard's Voice

Chapter 10: Richard's Voice

No one moved.
The recording echoed through the underground chamber with startling clarity.
It wasn't distorted.
It wasn't mechanical.
It sounded as though Richard Vale were standing just beyond the steel door.
Emma felt Preston's hand instinctively reach for hers.
For a brief second...
She didn't pull away.
Everyone stared at the blinking green light beside the vault.
Then Richard's voice continued.
"If this message has been activated, two things are true."
"First... someone has found my key."
"Second... someone I no longer trust is standing nearby."
A chill swept through the chamber.
Thomas's face hardened.
Cynthia looked toward the nearest control panel.
"There has to be a way to shut it off."
"There isn't."
Harold answered quietly.
"Richard never built an off switch."
The recording continued.
"Thomas..."
Every eye turned toward the silver-haired man.
His confident expression faltered.
"If you're alive..."
"...then I hope you finally chose to stop running."
Thomas lowered his head.
His jaw tightened.
Richard's voice remained calm.
"If you're hearing this because Cynthia convinced you that I betrayed you..."
"...I'm sorry."
Thomas looked as though the air had been knocked from his lungs.
"What?"
he whispered.
Emma glanced at Harold.
Harold's eyes widened in genuine confusion.
Richard continued.
"Someone forged documents in my name."
"Someone altered company accounts."
"Someone made sure my own brother believed I was stealing from him."
Thomas stumbled backward.
"No..."
He looked at Cynthia.
"You told me..."
She cut him off.
"Don't listen to a recording."
But Richard's voice spoke again.
"Thomas..."
"I never took your shares."
"I placed them in trust."
"The originals are inside this vault."
Silence.
Complete silence.
Thomas slowly turned toward Cynthia.
"You said..."
"...you said Richard forced me out."
Cynthia didn't answer.
She couldn't.
Richard continued.
"If my brother is standing there today..."
"...then he has suffered long enough."
Emma watched Thomas's hands begin to shake.
Fifteen years.
Fifteen years believing the wrong man.
Agent Sloan quietly signaled her team.
Two agents began moving toward the armed guards.
Slowly.
Carefully.
The guards didn't notice.
Their attention remained fixed on Thomas.
So did Cynthia's.
She stepped closer to him.
"Think."
"This is exactly what Richard wanted."
Thomas didn't respond.
She grabbed his arm.
"You and I survived because we trusted each other."
He looked down at her hand.
Then back into her eyes.
"Did we?"
Richard's voice continued.
"There's something else you should know."
"If the vault is opening..."
"...then I am almost certainly dead."
A faint smile crossed Charles Whitmore's face.
"Still dramatic."
Harold let out a quiet laugh through his tears.
"That sounds exactly like Richard."
The smile disappeared as the recording continued.
"I didn't fear dying."
"I feared leaving the truth unfinished."
Emma looked at the brass key.
The green light beside the vault glowed brighter.
Almost inviting.
Harold nodded.
"It's time."
She stepped forward.
Immediately, two armed men raised their rifles.
Agent Sloan aimed her weapon.
"Don't."
Thomas slowly lifted his hand.
"Lower them."
The guards hesitated.
"I said..."
"Lower your weapons."
One by one...
The rifles dropped.
Cynthia stared at him.
"What are you doing?"
Thomas answered without looking at her.
"For the first time in fifteen years..."
"I'm listening to my brother."
Emma approached the massive steel door.
Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.
She slid the brass key into the ancient lock.
It fit perfectly.
A soft metallic click echoed through the chamber.
Then another.
Deep inside the mechanism...
Massive gears began turning.
The floor vibrated.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
The twelve-foot steel door slowly unlocked.
But before it could open—
A sharp electronic chirp echoed through the chamber.
ACCESS DENIED
Everyone froze.
The green light instantly turned red.
Emma stepped back.
"What happened?"
Harold frowned.
"That shouldn't be possible."
A hidden screen illuminated beside the vault.
White letters appeared against a black background.
SECOND FOUNDER AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED
Thomas stared at the screen.
"What?"
Harold whispered,
"The vault was never meant to be opened by one founder alone."
Charles looked at Thomas.
"You said there were three locks."
Thomas nodded slowly.
"I thought Richard removed mine."
Harold shook his head.
"He didn't."
"He protected it."
Thomas reached into the inside pocket of his raincoat.
Everyone watched silently.
He removed a small silver key.
Unlike Emma's brass key...
This one bore a single engraved letter.
T
Harold smiled through tears.
"He kept your place."
Thomas's eyes filled for the first time.
"He still believed..."
"...I'd come home."
No one spoke.
Thomas walked toward the vault.
Stopping beside Emma.
The uncle and nephew exchanged a long look.
Neither trusted the other completely.
But both understood one thing.
Richard had planned this.
Only together could they uncover the truth.
Thomas inserted the silver key.
Two locks clicked simultaneously.
The red light disappeared.
The screen changed.
FOUNDERS VERIFIED
A low mechanical hum filled the chamber.
Massive steel bolts began retracting one after another.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then a fourth.
The vault door slowly swung inward.
A rush of cool air escaped from the darkness beyond.
Rows of shelves stretched into the distance.
Boxes.
Ledgers.
Hard drives.
Video tapes.
Photographs.
Everything perfectly preserved.
At the center of the room stood a single wooden desk.
On top of it rested an old-fashioned television monitor.
Without anyone touching it...
The screen flickered to life.
Static crackled.
Then Richard Vale appeared.
Not as a recording of his voice.
A video.
He looked older than in the photographs...
But alive.
Smiling directly into the camera.
He took a slow breath.
Then said the words that made Cynthia's face lose every trace of color.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then the person who betrayed me is standing in this room."
Slowly...
Richard raised his hand.
And pointed directly toward the camera.
As though he were identifying someone standing behind it.
May you like
Everyone instinctively turned...
Toward Cynthia Vale.
