Chapter 12: The List of Every Name

Chapter 12: The List of Every Name

No one moved.
The leather-bound journal rested inside the open drawer as though it had been waiting fifteen years for this exact moment.
Emma stepped closer.
The cover was dark brown, worn smooth at the corners.
Across the front, the gold lettering gleamed under the vault lights.
THE LIST OF EVERY NAME.
Harold Benson inhaled sharply.
"I've never seen that before."
Charles Whitmore looked surprised.
"Richard never mentioned it?"
Harold slowly shook his head.
"Never."
"He trusted me with many things."
"But not everything."
Agent Rebecca Sloan slipped on a fresh pair of evidence gloves.
"No one touches it until it's documented."
An evidence photographer immediately began taking pictures from every angle.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Only after the photographs were complete did Sloan carefully lift the journal from the drawer.
It was heavier than it looked.
Almost unnaturally so.
She placed it gently on Richard's desk.
The room gathered around.
The first page contained only one sentence.
Written in Richard Vale's unmistakable handwriting.
If this book is open... then I failed to stop them while I was alive.
Emma felt a lump rise in her throat.
Preston closed his eyes.
Even now...
Richard wasn't thinking about revenge.
He was thinking about responsibility.
Harold slowly turned the page.
The next sheet contained dozens of names.
Each followed by three columns.
Name.
Role.
Status.
The entries stretched for pages.
Company executives.
Attorneys.
Lobbyists.
Contractors.
Consultants.
Government inspectors.
Bank officers.
Every person connected to Vale Development over the previous twenty-five years.
Beside some names, Richard had written a single word.
Trusted.
Beside others...
Watch.
And beside a handful...
One chilling word.
Compromised.
Agent Sloan immediately began reading aloud.
"Daniel Mercer."
Role: Chief Financial Officer.
Status: Compromised.
She turned another page.
"Cynthia Vale."
Role: Acting Director.
Status: Manipulated.
The room fell silent.
Emma looked toward Cynthia.
She had stopped crying.
She simply stared at the page.
Almost unable to believe Richard had understood her better than she had understood herself.
Another page.
"Thomas Vale."
Role: Co-Founder.
Status: Deceived.
Thomas buried his face in his hands.
Harold placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"You weren't his enemy."
Thomas whispered,
"I spent fifteen years believing I was."
Charles turned another page.
Then stopped.
His expression changed.
"Harold..."
"You need to see this."
Harold leaned over.
His eyes widened.
At the bottom of the page...
A familiar name appeared.
Harold Benson.
Role: Legal Counsel.
Status:
Loyal.
Harold's hands began to tremble.
"He..."
"...he trusted me."
Charles smiled sadly.
"He always did."
Harold quietly wiped away a tear.
"I only wish I'd protected him better."
The pages continued.
More names.
More notes.
Some had checkmarks.
Others had dates.
Several included handwritten observations.
Emma noticed something strange.
Every few pages...
One line had been completely blacked out with thick ink.
Not crossed out.
Covered.
As if Richard had deliberately hidden those names.
She frowned.
"Why would he hide them?"
Sloan leaned closer.
"He wanted someone else to reveal them."
Harold nodded.
"Richard never erased information."
"He delayed it."
Olivia Grant suddenly pointed toward the inside cover.
"There's something here."
Pressed into the leather was a tiny brass button.
Almost invisible.
Sloan frowned.
"A hidden mechanism."
She looked toward Harold.
"Should we?"
Harold smiled faintly.
"If Richard built it..."
"He expected someone to."
Sloan pressed the button.
A soft click echoed through the journal.
The back cover slowly lifted.
Inside...
A thin envelope slid onto the desk.
Across the front, written in careful handwriting:
To the first honest Board of Directors.
Charles stared.
"My God."
Harold opened the envelope.
Inside was a typed letter.
And a flash drive.
Harold read aloud.
"If this letter is being read, then corruption has survived longer than I did."
"The enclosed drive contains every unauthorized financial transfer, every forged signature, every secret account, and every private meeting I documented."
"It also contains recordings."
Agent Sloan looked up.
"Recordings?"
Harold nodded.
Richard's letter continued.
"Not rumors."
"Not suspicions."
"Conversations."
Olivia's face drained of color.
"He recorded them?"
Charles answered quietly.
"Apparently."
Harold turned to the final paragraph.
"Some of the people on this list are guilty."
"Some are victims."
"Only evidence separates the two."
Sloan carefully picked up the flash drive.
"If this is authentic..."
She looked at her team.
"This case just became much bigger than Vale Development."
At that exact moment...
One of the agents monitoring communications hurried into the vault.
"Agent Sloan."
"What is it?"
"We've intercepted a satellite phone call."
"From Daniel Mercer?"
"Yes."
"Can you trace it?"
"We already did."
He hesitated.
"But there's something strange."
"What?"
"He isn't calling for help."
The agent looked around the room before continuing.
"He's warning someone."
"Who?"
The agent swallowed.
"We don't know."
"But before the signal ended..."
"...we heard him say one sentence."
The vault became silent again.
"What sentence?"
The agent read directly from his notes.
"Tell the Senator the List has been opened."
The words hit the room like an explosion.
Charles Whitmore slowly removed his glasses.
Olivia looked stunned.
Harold's face turned pale.
Emma glanced from one face to another.
"What senator?"
No one answered.
Not because they didn't want to.
Because none of them knew.
Except...
Cynthia.
She had gone completely still.
Her breathing quickened.
Her eyes widened in unmistakable recognition.
Preston noticed immediately.
He stepped toward her.
"Mom..."
"You know who he meant."
She looked at her son.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then, with tears filling her eyes, she whispered the words that changed everything once again.
"I've never met the President..."
She paused.
"But I had dinner with the Senator."
The room froze.
"And he wasn't just Daniel Mercer's partner..."
May you like
Her voice cracked.
"He was Richard's best friend."
