Chapter 11: The Confession

Chapter 11: The Confession

No one looked away from the screen.

Richard Vale's outstretched finger remained frozen for a heartbeat before the video continued.

His expression was calm.

Not angry.

Simply... disappointed.

"If your first instinct was to look at Cynthia..."

He paused.

"...then you made the same mistake I did."

The underground chamber fell into stunned silence.

Emma slowly lowered her gaze.

Preston looked at his father on the screen, unable to believe what he had just heard.

Even Cynthia appeared confused.

Richard continued.

"My wife made terrible choices."

"But she was never the mastermind."

Every eye in the room shifted again.

This time, no one knew where to look.

Agent Sloan narrowed her eyes.

"Then who?"

The answer came from the screen.

"The person responsible is someone who understood every blueprint..."

"...every financial record..."

"...every security system I ever designed."

Emma felt a chill crawl up her spine.

Richard's voice softened.

"Someone I loved like family."

Harold Benson frowned.

"No..."

Charles Whitmore slowly turned his head.

"There weren't many people with that access."

Olivia Grant whispered,

"The founders..."

Richard nodded in the recording, as though he could hear them.

"No."

"Not Thomas."

Thomas stared at the screen, tears welling in his eyes.

"Thomas was manipulated."

"He believed forged documents."

"He believed lies carefully prepared over years."

Thomas covered his face.

"I was such a fool."

Harold placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You were betrayed."

Richard's expression grew solemn.

"The architect of everything..."

"...was Daniel Mercer."

The name exploded through the chamber.

Preston's eyes widened.

"The accountant?"

Richard shook his head.

"Daniel was never just an accountant."

"He was my chief financial officer."

"He also designed most of our internal security systems."

Agent Sloan immediately looked toward one of her agents.

"The man from the ballroom."

The agent nodded grimly.

"The one who disappeared."

Richard continued.

"Twenty years ago, Daniel discovered a hidden reserve of land purchased before Vale Development went public."

"The land later became worth billions."

Emma frowned.

"The estate?"

Richard smiled sadly.

"No."

He reached behind him and lifted an old map.

A red circle marked a remote mountain valley.

"Lithium."

Charles Whitmore inhaled sharply.

"My God..."

Harold looked stunned.

"I never knew."

Richard nodded.

"Almost no one did."

"Geologists confirmed the valley held one of the largest lithium deposits in the country."

A murmur swept through the chamber.

Even the federal agents exchanged surprised glances.

Richard continued.

"I refused to exploit it until local families could be fairly compensated."

"Daniel disagreed."

Another image appeared on the screen.

Corporate documents.

Property deeds.

Bank transfers.

Forged signatures.

"He wanted immediate extraction."

"Unlimited profit."

"No delays."

Olivia quietly whispered,

"So he created another plan."

Richard nodded.

"He convinced Cynthia I intended to leave her with nothing."

Cynthia slowly backed away from the screen.

"No..."

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"He convinced Thomas I had stolen his inheritance."

Thomas closed his eyes.

Richard continued.

"Then he convinced both of them..."

"...that they needed him."

Emma felt her stomach tighten.

Daniel hadn't merely stolen money.

He had turned an entire family against itself.

Richard's final words before the video paused were barely above a whisper.

"The greatest thief isn't the one who steals your fortune."

"It's the one who steals your trust."

The screen went black.

No one spoke.

The silence lasted nearly a full minute.

Finally...

Cynthia collapsed into a nearby chair.

Her perfectly tailored suit was soaked from the rain.

Her carefully maintained image had vanished.

"I didn't know."

Her voice cracked.

"I swear..."

"I didn't know about the land."

Thomas looked at her.

"But you knew about the forged accounts."

She nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"You knew he was moving money."

Another nod.

"I thought..."

"...I thought Richard was hiding assets from us."

Preston stared at his mother.

"You never asked him?"

Tears rolled down her face.

"Daniel always had an explanation."

Harold closed his eyes in disappointment.

"You trusted the wrong man."

A radio crackled on Agent Sloan's shoulder.

She answered immediately.

"Sloan."

The voice on the other end sounded urgent.

"Ma'am."

"We've got movement."

"Where?"

"North side of the estate."

The surveillance drone had picked up a vehicle leaving through an old logging road."

Sloan's expression hardened.

"License plate?"

"No plate."

"Driver?"

The agent hesitated.

"We enhanced the image."

"It appears to be Daniel Mercer."

Every head snapped toward the radio.

"He was here?"

Emma whispered.

Sloan nodded grimly.

"He must have escaped before we entered the tunnel."

Charles looked toward the tunnel entrance.

"He's running."

Harold slowly shook his head.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

Harold's eyes settled on the map Richard had displayed moments earlier.

"He isn't running."

"He knows exactly where he's going."

Sloan frowned.

"Where?"

Harold pointed to the circled valley.

"The lithium property."

Olivia's face turned pale.

"If Daniel reaches those land records first..."

"He can still claim ownership."

Sloan immediately turned to her agents.

"Seal every road leading out of the county."

One of the agents spoke into his radio.

Another rushed toward the tunnel.

Preston looked at Emma.

"This isn't over."

She tightened her grip on Richard's brass key.

"No."

"It was never just about our wedding."

Before anyone could move—

The old television flickered back to life by itself.

Static hissed across the screen.

Then another prerecorded message appeared.

Richard looked far more serious this time.

As though he had anticipated exactly this moment.

He leaned closer to the camera and said:

"If Daniel has escaped..."

"...then you're already too late."

He paused.

Then revealed one final sentence that made every person in the vault freeze.

"Because the lithium valley was never the real inheritance."

The screen faded to black.

On the desk below the television...

A hidden drawer slowly slid open with a soft mechanical click.

Inside rested a single leather-bound journal.

Across the front, embossed in gold letters, were five words:

THE LIST OF EVERY NAME.
