Chapter 6: Blackwood Estate

Chapter 6: Blackwood Estate

The words hung in the darkness.

Blackwood Estate.

No one spoke.

Even the agents seemed momentarily frozen.

Harold Benson's face had turned as white as the linen tablecloths.

Charles Whitmore looked at him.

"Harold..."

"What is Blackwood Estate?"

Harold didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he removed his glasses and slowly rubbed his eyes.

"It wasn't supposed to exist anymore."

Agent Sloan stepped closer.

"Mr. Benson."

"If you know something that could help us locate Cynthia Vale..."

"I need you to tell us now."

Harold nodded.

"I will."

"But not here."

He glanced around the ballroom.

"There are too many ears."

Sloan understood.

She motioned to two agents.

"Secure every entrance."

"No one leaves until we've identified every guest."

The agents immediately locked the ballroom doors.

A wave of nervous murmurs spread through the crowd.

Charles raised a hand.

"Everyone, remain calm."

"This is now an active federal investigation."

"We'll cooperate."

The room gradually settled.

Meanwhile, another team reviewed the security cameras.

One technician frowned.

"That's strange."

Sloan walked over.

"What?"

"The cameras went offline."

"For how long?"

"Exactly ninety-three seconds."

"Sabotage?"

The technician nodded.

"Someone knew where the main power relay was."

Sloan's jaw tightened.

"Cynthia didn't plan this alone."

Twenty minutes later...

The wedding reception had transformed into a command center.

Evidence boxes lined one wall.

Agents photographed every table.

Corporate executives quietly gave statements.

Guests who had arrived expecting champagne and dancing now found themselves answering federal questions.

I sat beside my parents.

Neither of them had spoken much.

My mother finally broke the silence.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at her in confusion.

"For what?"

She smiled sadly.

"For thinking today was about us."

"It isn't."

"It's about you."

I took her hand.

"No."

"It's always been about us."

She squeezed my fingers.

"You deserved a beautiful wedding."

I glanced across the ballroom.

The flowers.

The candles.

The untouched wedding cake.

"It still was."

She looked surprised.

"Really?"

I smiled through my tears.

"I found out exactly who deserves to stand beside me."

Across the room...

Preston overheard those words.

He lowered his head.

He knew I hadn't answered whether that person was him.

Near the stage...

Harold finally spoke.

"Blackwood Estate was Richard Vale's first home."

Charles frowned.

"I've never heard of it."

"You weren't supposed to."

Harold continued.

"Long before Vale Development became a billion-dollar company..."

"Richard bought an abandoned country estate."

"He restored it himself."

"It became his retreat."

"The only place where he truly trusted anyone."

Agent Sloan took notes.

"Who knew about it?"

Harold answered carefully.

"Richard."

"Myself."

"Cynthia."

"And..."

He hesitated.

"And?"

Harold's eyes darkened.

"Richard's younger brother."

Charles looked stunned.

"Richard had a brother?"

Harold nodded.

"Thomas Vale."

The name meant nothing to me.

But it clearly meant something to Charles.

"I thought Thomas disappeared."

"So did everyone else."

Harold sighed.

"He vanished sixteen years ago."

"The public believed he'd moved overseas."

"But he didn't."

Charles stared.

"You're saying..."

Harold nodded.

"I believe Thomas has been hiding."

A chill ran through the room.

Agent Sloan spoke quietly.

"Do you think he's helping Cynthia?"

"I don't know."

"But if she runs to Blackwood..."

"It's because she expects someone to be waiting."

At that moment...

An agent hurried into the ballroom carrying a laptop.

"Ma'am."

Sloan looked up.

"What did you find?"

"We recovered deleted GPS data from Cynthia's phone."

"You already accessed it?"

"The phone wasn't encrypted."

He rotated the laptop.

A digital map filled the screen.

Several locations were marked.

Most were corporate offices.

One was a private airfield.

Another...

Was a wooded property nearly three hours away.

The label simply read:

BLACKWOOD ESTATE

Sloan immediately pointed at it.

"There."

She turned toward her team.

"Prepare a convoy."

"We leave in ten minutes."

Preston stepped forward.

"I'm coming."

"No."

Sloan answered.

"It's dangerous."

"So is letting my mother disappear."

"You aren't trained."

"No."

He looked toward me.

"But this started because of my family."

"It ends with my family."

I stood.

"I'm going too."

Preston immediately shook his head.

"Absolutely not."

I folded my arms.

"You don't get to make decisions for me anymore."

A few nearby agents exchanged awkward smiles.

Sloan looked between us.

"I appreciate the determination."

"But civilians don't accompany federal operations."

Charles Whitmore cleared his throat.

"There may be another option."

Everyone turned.

"I own a helicopter."

The room stared.

Charles shrugged.

"It's faster than driving."

Harold blinked.

"You still pilot it yourself?"

Charles smiled.

"Every Saturday."

Even Sloan couldn't hide a faint smile.

"Mr. Whitmore..."

"I don't think federal regulations allow private citizens to join an active operation."

Charles nodded.

"They don't."

He reached into his wallet and produced an old identification card.

"My apologies."

"I forgot to mention."

Before retiring...

"I served twenty-eight years as a federal marshal."

Several agents looked at each other in surprise.

Sloan examined the ID.

Then laughed softly.

"Well..."

"That certainly changes things."

Within minutes...

The ballroom became a hive of activity.

Maps were spread across tables.

Agents loaded equipment.

Helicopter coordinates were confirmed.

Outside, rain began falling against the enormous windows.

Thunder rolled across the evening sky.

As everyone prepared to leave...

Harold quietly walked over to me.

"Emma."

"Yes?"

He reached into his coat pocket.

He removed a small brass key.

Old.

Scratched.

Its handle was engraved with a single letter.

R

"Richard gave me this fifteen years ago."

He placed it in my palm.

"If anything ever happened..."

"He told me to give it..."

"...to the first person who reminded him what integrity looked like."

I stared at the key.

"Why me?"

Harold smiled.

"Because today..."

"You defended your parents..."

"...when it would have been easier to protect yourself."

I closed my fingers around the key.

"What does it open?"

Harold looked toward the rain-covered windows.

"I honestly don't know."

He paused.

"But Richard always said..."

"If the truth is ever buried..."

"...the key will know where to find it."

Before I could ask another question—

An agent rushed back into the ballroom, out of breath.

"Agent Sloan!"

She turned sharply.

"What is it?"

The agent held up a tablet displaying a live traffic camera.

Everyone gathered around.

A black SUV sped down a deserted highway through the rain.

The camera zoomed in just enough to reveal the driver.

Cynthia Vale.

She wasn't alone.

In the passenger seat sat an older man with silver hair...

A man Harold Benson recognized instantly.

His face drained of color.

"No..."

Charles looked at him.

"You know him?"

Harold's voice was barely above a whisper.

"I'd know him anywhere."

May you like

"That's Thomas Vale."

"The man everyone believed had been dead for sixteen years."
