Chapter 8 — The Forgotten Memory

Chapter 8 — The Forgotten Memory

The safe house was located nearly three hours outside Philadelphia.

It was an old property Harrison owned under a company name that nobody could trace.

No public records.

No neighbors.

No cameras.

No connection to Cole Legal.

For most people, it looked like an abandoned country home.

For Harrison Cole…

It was a fortress.

Khloe sat by the fireplace, wrapped in a blanket, staring at the flames.

Her entire life had changed in less than one week.

First, she discovered her husband’s betrayal.

Then she discovered he planned to steal her future.

Then she learned the people she thought were her parents had hidden the truth about her identity.

And now…

A powerful family that had controlled Pennsylvania for decades wanted something from her.

She looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Harrison noticed.

“You should sleep.”

She shook her head.

“Every time I close my eyes, I see something else I didn’t know.”

He sat across from her.

“That’s because your mind is trying to process everything.”

“How am I supposed to process my whole life being a secret?”

Harrison didn’t have an answer.

Because lawyers could argue facts.

They could prove evidence.

They could win battles.

But they could not repair a person’s entire reality collapsing.

The next morning, Daniel arrived with new information.

Harrison immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

Daniel placed a file on the table.

“We found Elizabeth and Daniel Whitmore’s original investigation.”

Khloe looked up.

“My biological parents?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Harrison opened the file.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Financial reports.

And handwritten notes.

The first page was titled:

THE KENSINGTON FOUNDATION INVESTIGATION

Harrison read silently.

Then his expression hardened.

“What?”

Khloe asked.

He looked at her.

“Your parents weren’t investigating a company.”

“Then what were they investigating?”

“A network.”

Daniel pointed at the documents.

“The Kensington family wasn’t just involved in business fraud.”

He paused.

“They were controlling people.”

The documents revealed a shocking pattern.

Over twenty years, the Kensington family had quietly gained influence over:

Banks.

Real estate companies.

Political campaigns.

Legal organizations.

Even charitable foundations.

They didn’t control everything directly.

They controlled the people who controlled everything.

Harrison studied the records.

“This is why they were afraid of your parents.”

Khloe looked at the papers.

“They knew too much.”

“Yes.”

“And they tried to erase them.”

Harrison nodded.

That afternoon, Harrison asked Khloe something unexpected.

“Tell me about your childhood.”

She looked confused.

“My childhood?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father said the key is you.”

Khloe frowned.

“I don’t remember anything important.”

“Try.”

She looked into the fire.

“I grew up normally.”

“Anything unusual?”

She thought.

“Not really.”

“Places you went often?”

“Nothing.”

“People who visited?”

She became quiet.

Then suddenly…

A memory appeared.

“Wait.”

Harrison leaned forward.

“What?”

Khloe closed her eyes.

“When I was little…”

She paused.

“My father used to take me to an old library.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Try to remember.”

She concentrated.

“There was a symbol.”

“What symbol?”

“A bird.”

Daniel looked at Harrison.

“A bird?”

Khloe nodded.

“An eagle.”

Harrison became still.

“Anything else?”

She frowned.

“There was a phrase.”

“What phrase?”

She whispered:

“Truth has wings.”

Harrison immediately stood.

Daniel noticed.

“You know something.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

Harrison walked toward the documents.

“The symbol.”

He pointed at one of the old investigation files.

There it was.

A small eagle symbol.

Daniel looked shocked.

“That’s the same symbol?”

“Yes.”

Khloe stared.

“What does it mean?”

Harrison looked at her.

“It belonged to your parents’ secret investigation group.”

“Group?”

“Yes.”

“They weren’t working alone.”

Meanwhile, Richard Harrington’s world continued collapsing.

The board had officially removed him from several executive decisions.

His attorneys warned him that criminal charges were possible.

And now Charles Kensington refused to answer his calls.

Richard finally understood.

He was alone.

The man who had spent his entire life believing he controlled everything had become disposable.

That night, he drove to the Kensington estate.

He entered without permission.

Charles was waiting.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You knew this would happen.”

Charles didn’t deny it.

“You knew Harrison would investigate.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Vanessa would panic.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Khloe would discover everything.”

“Yes.”

Richard stared at him.

“Then why?”

Charles looked at him calmly.

“Because I needed Harrison to find the truth.”

Richard froze.

“What?”

Charles smiled.

“You were never the final piece.”

“Then what was I?”

“A distraction.”

The answer destroyed him.

Back at the safe house, Harrison received a message.

A photograph.

Khloe’s old childhood library.

Attached was one sentence:

She remembers more than she thinks.

Harrison immediately recognized the sender.

Charles Kensington.

“He wants us to find it.”

Daniel looked concerned.

“Why would he help?”

“He isn’t helping.”

“Then what?”

“He’s leading us somewhere.”

Khloe looked at Harrison.

“Is it a trap?”

“Yes.”

“Then why go?”

Harrison looked at her.

“Because traps work both ways.”

The next day, they returned to Philadelphia.

Not as victims.

Not as people hiding.

As investigators.

The old library was abandoned.

Dust covered the shelves.

The walls were cracked.

But Khloe immediately stopped when she entered.

Her breathing changed.

“I know this place.”

Harrison watched her carefully.

“What do you remember?”

She walked slowly through the room.

A strange feeling passed through her.

Then she touched an old wooden bookshelf.

“This.”

“What?”

“There was something here.”

She pushed against the shelf.

Nothing happened.

Then she noticed a small carved eagle symbol.

Her fingers traced it.

The shelf clicked.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small box.

Khloe stared.

“I’ve seen this before.”

Harrison looked at her.

“When?”

She whispered:

“In my dreams.”

Inside the box was a single item.

A necklace.

A small silver eagle pendant.

And beneath it…

A flash drive.

Harrison picked it up carefully.

Daniel connected it to a secure laptop.

A video file appeared.

Created thirty-six years earlier.

The title:

FOR KHLOE — WHEN SHE IS READY

Everyone became silent.

Harrison pressed play.

The screen turned black.

Then a woman appeared.

A woman Khloe had never seen.

But somehow…

Khloe immediately began crying.

“Mom…”

The woman looked directly into the camera.

And said:

“If you are watching this…”

She took a deep breath.

“It means they found you.”

The video continued.

And the first words out of Elizabeth Whitmore’s mouth changed everything:

“Khloe, your real enemy is not Richard Harrington.”

A pause.

May you like

“It is someone much closer.”

The screen froze.
