Chapter 17 — The Mother Who Disappeared

Chapter 17 — The Mother Who Disappeared

For thirty years, Harrison Cole believed he knew the greatest pain of his life.

Losing his parents.

Growing up without answers.

Building a career around justice because he never received it himself.

But now…

The foundation of his entire life was collapsing again.

His mother was alive.

The woman he buried in his memories had never truly left.

She had been somewhere.

Watching.

Waiting.

Hiding.

And Harrison had one question that burned hotter than anything else:

Why?

The search began immediately.

Harrison used every resource he had.

Private investigators.

Old government records.

International databases.

Banking information.

Travel histories.

But whoever had hidden his mother had done it perfectly.

There was almost nothing.

No official death record.

No hospital record.

No grave.

No evidence.

Only a single mysterious gap.

A missing year.

The year everything changed.

Daniel sat across from Harrison in the office.

“You need to be careful.”

Harrison looked up.

“Why?”

“Because if your mother disappeared intentionally…”

“She may know who is behind all of this.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Daniel hesitated.

“She may also know why.”

Harrison understood.

The truth could hurt more than the lie.

Khloe watched her brother silently.

She had never seen Harrison uncertain.

Not once.

Not in court.

Not during attacks.

Not even when their world collapsed.

But now…

He was different.

Not the feared attorney.

Not the man everyone respected.

Just a son searching for his mother.

“Harry.”

He looked at her.

“You don’t have to do this alone.”

A small smile appeared.

“You always say that.”

“Because it’s true.”

For the first time in days, Harrison smiled back.

“You sound like Mom.”

The moment he said it…

They both became quiet.

Because neither of them knew if that was a painful memory…

Or a promise.

Meanwhile, Richard Harrington was still with Thomas.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

Richard couldn’t stop thinking about everything he had believed.

His entire life.

His success.

His marriage.

His power.

All of it had been carefully arranged.

“What happens now?”

Richard asked.

Thomas looked at him.

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“Whether you finally choose correctly.”

Richard laughed.

“Choose correctly?”

A bitter smile crossed his face.

“I ruined everything.”

Thomas looked at him.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised him.

“But you are not the first person to be controlled by them.”

Richard looked away.

“Khloe will never forgive me.”

“No.”

Thomas agreed.

“She probably won’t.”

A pause.

“But forgiveness is not what you need.”

“What do I need?”

“To tell the truth.”

That evening, Richard made a decision.

For the first time in years…

He stopped thinking about protecting himself.

He contacted Harrison.

Not through lawyers.

Not through secret messages.

Directly.

Harrison answered.

“What do you want?”

Richard’s voice was quiet.

“I need to tell you something.”

“I’m listening.”

“I know where they kept the original records.”

Harrison became still.

“What records?”

“The records proving everything.”

“Where?”

Richard swallowed.

“My family’s old private archive.”

Harrison frowned.

“Why would you tell me?”

Richard looked at the floor.

“Because Khloe deserves the truth.”

The meeting was arranged.

But Harrison did not trust Richard.

He shouldn’t.

Richard had already proven what he was capable of.

Still…

Information was information.

And Harrison needed every piece.

At the abandoned Harrington estate, Richard opened the hidden archive.

The room had not been touched for years.

Old documents filled the shelves.

Photos.

Contracts.

Private agreements.

Harrison searched carefully.

Then he found something.

A file marked:

WHITMORE SUCCESSION AGREEMENT

He opened it.

Inside was the original agreement between the four families.

Whitmore.

Kensington.

Ashford.

Harrington.

But one page had been removed.

Harrison looked at Richard.

“Who took this?”

Richard shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Then Harrison noticed something.

A small signature at the bottom.

A signature he recognized.

His own father.

Before he could read further…

The lights shut off.

Everyone froze.

Daniel immediately reached for his weapon.

A voice echoed from the darkness.

“You always were your father’s son.”

Harrison turned.

A woman stepped forward.

Older.

Calm.

Powerful.

His entire world stopped.

“Mom?”

She looked at him.

And for a moment…

The feared attorney disappeared.

Only a son remained.

“Hello, Harrison.”

His voice barely worked.

“You’re alive.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The question carried thirty years of pain.

His mother looked down.

“Because I had to disappear.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You let me grow up alone.”

“I know.”

“You let me bury you.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know.”

Khloe watched silently.

She understood.

Because she had lived the same pain.

The pain of discovering the people who loved you had hidden the truth.

Harrison stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.”

His mother looked at the documents.

Then at Khloe.

Then back at Harrison.

“You finally found her.”

Harrison frowned.

“Found who?”

She looked at Khloe.

“The person your father died protecting.”

Khloe froze.

“What?”

Harrison’s mother walked closer.

“Khloe…”

Her voice softened.

“Your father did not die because he discovered the truth.”

A pause.

“He died because he tried to protect the person who could destroy them.”

Harrison’s expression changed.

“Who killed him?”

His mother looked toward the darkness outside.

Then whispered:

“The person who raised you.”

Silence.

Everyone froze.

Khloe stared.

“What?”

Harrison’s voice became dangerous.

“What did you say?”

His mother looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“The person you called your protector…”

A pause.

“Was the person who betrayed your family.”

At that exact moment…

Every phone in the room received the same message.

A video file.

No sender.

No number.

Only a title:

THE NIGHT HARRISON’S FATHER DIED

Harrison stared at the screen.

Because someone had recorded the truth.

Someone had kept it hidden for thirty years.

May you like

And now…

They wanted him to watch.
