Chapter 2 — The Secret Behind Harrington Empire

Chapter 2 — The Secret Behind Harrington Empire

Harrison Cole had spent twenty years learning one important lesson.

People rarely destroyed themselves with one mistake.

They destroyed themselves with patterns.

A single lie could be explained.

A single bad decision could be defended.

But when the same person repeatedly chose greed over loyalty, deception over honesty, and power over people…

Eventually, the truth built its own case.

And Richard Harrington had left behind a mountain of evidence.

At 5:30 the next morning, Harrison was already inside his Manhattan office.

The city outside was still quiet.

Most people were asleep.

But Harrison had never needed much sleep.

Not when someone had threatened his family.

On the large screen in front of him were hundreds of documents.

Richard’s companies.

Investment records.

Property transfers.

Bank accounts.

Corporate connections.

Every piece slowly formed a picture.

And the picture was worse than he expected.

His longtime investigator, Daniel Mercer, placed a coffee on the desk.

“You haven’t slept.”

Harrison didn’t look away from the screen.

“Neither have you.”

Daniel smiled slightly.

“That’s because you pay me to follow impossible people.”

Harrison finally looked at him.

“Richard Harrington isn’t impossible.”

“No?”

“No.”

He pointed at the screen.

“He’s careless.”

Daniel studied the files.

“You think he made mistakes?”

“I think he became arrogant.”

Harrison enlarged one document.

A company name appeared.

Harrington Strategic Holdings.

“Look at this.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“What am I looking at?”

“Three years ago, Richard created a private investment branch. He claimed it was for international expansion.”

“And?”

“It never expanded.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then where did the money go?”

Harrison clicked another file.

Several transfers appeared.

Different companies.

Different countries.

Same destination.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Offshore accounts.”

“Exactly.”

“But moving money offshore isn’t automatically illegal.”

“No.”

Harrison’s eyes narrowed.

“But hiding marital assets during a divorce is.”

Across Philadelphia, Richard Harrington sat inside his private office staring out at the city.

Normally, the view made him feel powerful.

Every building reminded him of something he had created.

Every project carried his name.

Every headline proved he mattered.

But today…

The city looked different.

Because for the first time, Richard realized someone was looking behind the image.

And Harrison Cole was not impressed by appearances.

His assistant entered.

“Mr. Harrington?”

Richard turned.

“What?”

“Vanessa is here.”

He immediately looked annoyed.

“She didn’t tell me she was coming.”

“She said it was urgent.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Of course it was.

Everything was becoming urgent.

Everything was becoming complicated.

A few months earlier, he had believed he controlled every piece of the board.

Khloe would accept the divorce.

The company would remain protected.

Vanessa would get what she wanted.

Their child would carry his name.

A perfect future.

But Harrison had changed the game.

Vanessa walked into the office wearing a designer coat and carrying an expensive handbag.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

Richard knew that expression.

It was the same confidence that attracted him to her.

The belief that she could manipulate any situation.

“We need to talk.”

Richard didn’t offer her a seat.

“What did you do?”

Her expression changed.

“What do you mean?”

“Harrison received a message.”

Vanessa froze.

“What message?”

“Someone warned him there was more.”

For the first time, her confidence disappeared.

“Did he find out?”

Richard stared at her.

“Find out what?”

Vanessa looked away.

That small movement told him everything.

“Vanessa.”

She remained silent.

“Tell me.”

Finally, she whispered:

“You don’t know everything about your own company.”

Richard stepped closer.

“What does that mean?”

She took a breath.

“Your father’s old partners.”

Richard’s face changed.

“What about them?”

“They never left.”

The room became silent.

Richard stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“They just stopped appearing publicly.”

Richard felt a strange discomfort.

His father had built Harrington Commercial Group decades earlier.

But after his death, Richard had taken control.

He believed he knew every secret inside the company.

Every account.

Every agreement.

Every relationship.

Apparently, he was wrong.

That afternoon, Harrison met with Daniel again.

“There’s something strange,” Daniel said.

Harrison looked up.

“What?”

“Richard isn’t the only person moving money.”

Daniel placed another folder on the desk.

“There are older transactions.”

“How old?”

“Almost twenty years.”

Harrison opened the file.

The names immediately caught his attention.

“These are investors from before Richard became CEO.”

“Yes.”

“Why are they connected to him now?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Because they never stopped owning part of the company.”

Harrison studied the documents.

“Hidden ownership.”

“Exactly.”

“Who are they?”

Daniel looked serious.

“That’s the problem.”

Harrison waited.

“They’re not listed under their real names.”

A silence followed.

Then Harrison asked:

“Find them.”

Daniel nodded.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“One of those investors has a connection to Vanessa Kensington.”

Harrison leaned forward.

“What kind of connection?”

Daniel slid another document across the desk.

A photograph.

Vanessa.

Standing beside an older man.

A man Harrison recognized immediately.

His expression hardened.

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Harrison stared at the photo.

Because the man standing beside Vanessa was not just an investor.

He was one of the most influential businessmen in Pennsylvania.

A man who had spent decades avoiding scandals.

A man who had helped Richard’s company grow.

A man who was believed to be untouchable.

Charles Kensington.

Vanessa’s father.

That night, Khloe woke up from a nightmare.

She sat up quickly, breathing heavily.

Her hand immediately went to her stomach.

The baby was moving.

She closed her eyes in relief.

Then she heard footsteps.

Harrison appeared at the bedroom door.

“You okay?”

Khloe nodded.

“I’m fine.”

He didn’t believe her.

“You don’t have to pretend with me.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I keep thinking about what happened.”

Harrison walked inside.

“What happened?”

“Everything.”

She looked at him.

“I spent six years loving someone who never existed.”

Harrison sat beside her.

“No.”

She looked confused.

“He existed.”

“Harry…”

“He was the man you believed he was.”

A pause.

“But he made choices that changed him.”

Khloe looked down.

“I feel stupid.”

Harrison’s expression immediately softened.

“Never say that.”

“I ignored everything.”

“You trusted someone you loved.”

“That was my mistake.”

“No.”

His voice became firm.

“His mistake was believing your kindness made you weak.”

Khloe looked at her brother.

And for the first time in weeks…

She felt safe.

The next morning, Harrison received a call.

The number was unknown.

He answered.

“Cole.”

A man’s voice responded.

“You’re digging into something that has been buried for a long time.”

Harrison remained silent.

“Who is this?”

“You should stop protecting your sister.”

Harrison’s eyes narrowed.

“Or what?”

The voice lowered.

“Or you’ll discover why Richard Harrington was chosen.”

The call ended.

Harrison stared at the phone.

Chosen.

That word stayed in his mind.

Because it suggested something terrifying.

Richard Harrington had not built his empire alone.

Someone had built it for him.

Someone had protected him.

Someone had been waiting in the shadows.

Harrison looked at the documents covering his desk.

Then he quietly said:

“Now I know where to look.”

Because this was no longer a divorce case.

May you like

It was a war.

And Harrison Cole had just found the enemy.
