Chapter 14 — The Father Who Never Died

Chapter 14 — The Father Who Never Died

Khloe woke up gasping.

Her hand immediately moved to her stomach.

The baby was still there.

Safe.

Alive.

But her mind was trapped somewhere else.

A memory.

A face.

A voice.

A man she had spent thirty-six years believing was gone.

Her father.

Daniel Whitmore.

The man her entire life had been built around.

The man everyone told her had disappeared.

The man she had just remembered holding her as a child.

And he was alive.

When Harrison arrived at the hospital, he knew something was wrong.

Khloe was sitting upright, staring at the window.

“Khloe?”

She turned.

“Harry…”

Her voice was shaking.

“I remembered him.”

Harrison immediately understood.

“Your father?”

She nodded.

“He was alive.”

Silence.

Harrison sat beside her.

“Tell me exactly what you saw.”

Khloe closed her eyes.

“I was little.”

“How little?”

“Maybe five or six.”

“What happened?”

She swallowed.

“He was holding me.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Anything else?”

She looked at him.

“He told me something.”

“What?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He said, ‘I’m sorry I have to leave you.’”

Harrison became still.

“He said that?”

“Yes.”

“Anything after?”

Khloe nodded slowly.

“He said…”

She struggled to remember.

“He said, ‘Trust Harrison. He will protect you.’”

The room went quiet.

Because Harrison understood the meaning.

Her father had known.

He had known Harrison would become the person protecting her.

But how?

Unless…

The story they had been told was never true.

Daniel arrived an hour later.

When Harrison told him what Khloe remembered, his face changed.

“You need to see something.”

He opened an old file.

Inside was a photograph.

A man.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

Daniel Whitmore.

Khloe covered her mouth.

“That’s him.”

Harrison stared.

“When was this taken?”

Daniel looked at the date.

“Three years ago.”

Nobody spoke.

Three years ago.

Not twenty.

Not thirty.

Three.

Her father had been alive three years ago.

The investigation changed instantly.

Harrison contacted every source he trusted.

Medical records.

Travel records.

Financial records.

Anything connected to Daniel Whitmore.

Within hours, they found something.

A hidden identity.

A man living quietly in another state.

No public records.

No social media.

No connection to his former life.

The name:

David Walker.

Harrison stared at the screen.

“He changed his name.”

Daniel nodded.

“Why?”

Harrison already knew.

“To survive.”

Meanwhile, Richard Harrington was discovering his own family secrets.

After the mysterious phone call, he searched his father’s old documents.

He had spent years believing his father was just another successful businessman.

But hidden inside an old storage box…

He found letters.

Letters between his father and Charles Kensington.

His hands trembled as he read.

The Harrington family had not accidentally joined the Kensington empire.

They had been part of it from the beginning.

His grandfather had helped create the financial network.

His father had continued it.

And Richard…

Richard was simply the next generation.

A tool passed down.

Richard sat on the floor of his office.

For the first time, he understood.

He had betrayed Khloe.

But he had also been betrayed.

His entire life had been shaped by people who saw him as nothing more than an asset.

And now…

They were willing to destroy him.

That evening, Harrison and Khloe traveled to meet the man who had been missing for thirty years.

The location was a small cabin outside Pittsburgh.

No luxury.

No security.

No signs of wealth.

Just a quiet life.

Harrison knocked.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the door opened.

An older man stood there.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

But Khloe knew immediately.

She didn’t need proof.

She didn’t need documents.

She didn’t need DNA.

Because some connections existed beyond logic.

“Dad?”

The man froze.

His face collapsed.

For a moment, he looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment his entire life.

“Khloe…”

Her name broke him.

And then he cried.

She didn’t move.

Neither did he.

Thirty-six years.

A lifetime.

Standing between them.

Finally, Daniel stepped forward.

“I’m sorry.”

Khloe’s voice was quiet.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you leave me?”

The question hurt more than anger.

Daniel looked down.

“Because staying would have killed you.”

She shook her head.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

The words came out sharper than she expected.

Daniel accepted them.

“You’re right.”

A pause.

“I failed you.”

Harrison watched silently.

He had spent years fighting for justice.

But this was not a courtroom.

There was no evidence.

No witnesses.

Just a father and daughter trying to understand thirty years of pain.

Daniel finally explained.

After discovering the Kensington network, he and Elizabeth realized they could not win by fighting openly.

They needed a different strategy.

They needed Khloe hidden.

They needed the evidence protected.

And they needed someone inside the system.

That person was Harrison.

“Your parents told me about you.”

Daniel looked at Harrison.

“They believed you would protect her.”

Harrison nodded slowly.

“Why me?”

“Because your father trusted you.”

A pause.

“And because you were the only person who never cared about power.”

Khloe wiped her tears.

“But why come back now?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because the people who hunted us are finally desperate.”

“Why?”

“Because they know the truth is about to come out.”

Harrison stepped forward.

“What truth?”

Daniel looked at him.

“The trust was never the real prize.”

Everyone became silent.

“Then what was?”

Daniel looked at Khloe.

“Your biological mother discovered something far more dangerous than money.”

“What?”

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“She discovered who created the entire network.”

Harrison narrowed his eyes.

“Who?”

Daniel took a breath.

Then said:

“The person controlling Kensington, Ashford, and Harrington from the beginning.”

A pause.

“The person nobody has ever seen.”

Before anyone could ask another question…

A gunshot shattered the night.

The cabin window exploded.

Harrison immediately pushed Khloe down.

Daniel dropped behind the table.

Someone was outside.

Someone had followed them.

Harrison looked toward the darkness.

Because whoever fired that shot was not trying to scare them.

They were trying to end the story forever.

Minutes later, after the attacker disappeared, Harrison found something left behind.

A small envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of Khloe as a child.

On the back were five words:

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET HER DIE.

Harrison stared at the message.

His expression became ice cold.

Because now he knew.

The enemy was no longer hiding.

The war had officially begun.
