Chapter 7 - The Arrest No One Saw Coming

The room seemed to freeze.

Every sound disappeared.

Even the hum of the air conditioner felt distant.

Preston stared at Detective Harris.

His face had lost every trace of color.

"You can't be serious."

Detective Harris held up his phone.

"The warrant has just been signed by the duty judge."

"It became active two minutes ago."

The younger detective stepped beside him.

He unfolded the official document.

His voice echoed through the boardroom.

"Preston James Whitmore."

"You are under arrest on suspicion of felony financial fraud, embezzlement, evidence tampering, and conspiracy."

He paused.

"Additional charges may be filed pending the investigation into today's assault."

The words struck Preston like a physical blow.

He looked desperately around the room.

At the board members.

At the executives.

At the attorneys.

Not one person came to his defense.

Not one.

He finally turned toward Raymond.

"You know I didn't mean for any of this to happen."

Raymond's expression remained unreadable.

"Neither did Emily."

Preston lowered his eyes.

"I made mistakes."

Raymond slowly shook his head.

"No."

"Mistakes are accidents."

"What you did required planning."

The detectives stepped closer.

"Mr. Whitmore."

"Please stand."

For several seconds, Preston didn't move.

He looked toward the large windows overlooking the city.

The skyline he had admired for years suddenly felt farther away than ever.

"I built this hospital."

His voice cracked.

The Chief Financial Officer quietly corrected him.

"No."

"You worked here."

"There is a difference."

The words hit harder than anyone expected.

Preston slowly stood.

His expensive suit suddenly looked too large.

Too heavy.

Detective Harris removed a pair of handcuffs from his belt.

The metallic sound echoed across the room.

Preston instinctively stepped backward.

"You don't have to do this in front of everyone."

The detective answered calmly.

"You chose the place."

"You committed the crimes."

"The location is simply where they caught up with you."

The cuffs clicked shut around Preston's wrists.

For a brief moment, no one looked away.

The man who had spent years walking these halls as an executive was leaving as a suspect.

One board member quietly whispered,

"I never imagined this."

Another replied,

"Neither did I."

As the detectives prepared to escort Preston toward the door, he suddenly stopped.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at him.

"I need to speak with Emily."

Raymond answered before anyone else could.

"No."

"I deserve one chance."

"You had countless chances."

"I need to explain."

Raymond's voice remained steady.

"Explain what?"

"Why you stood there while another woman assaulted your pregnant wife?"

"Why you stole from the hospital?"

"Why you lied to everyone who trusted you?"

Each question landed like another weight on Preston's shoulders.

"I still love her."

Raymond looked directly into his eyes.

"If that were true..."

"...we wouldn't be standing here."

The detectives gently guided Preston toward the exit.

Just before reaching the door, Detective Harris's radio crackled.

A dispatcher spoke urgently.

"Detective Harris."

"New information."

He pressed the button on his shoulder.

"Go ahead."

"We've completed the preliminary search of Mr. Whitmore's downtown condominium."

Harris frowned.

"What did you find?"

The dispatcher hesitated.

"A hidden wall safe."

Every person in the boardroom became still.

Harris asked,

"Contents?"

"Cash."

"Jewelry."

"Several passports."

"And..."

Another pause.

"What else?"

"A sealed envelope labeled..."

Paper shuffled over the radio.

"...'For Emily.'"

Preston's head snapped up.

His eyes widened.

"No."

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Raymond noticed immediately.

"You know what's inside."

Preston shook his head frantically.

"No."

"I mean..."

"I forgot about it."

"You forgot?"

Raymond repeated quietly.

"A letter addressed to your wife?"

Preston couldn't answer.

Detective Harris spoke into the radio.

"Do not open the envelope."

"Place it into evidence."

"We'll process it here."

"Understood."

The transmission ended.

The room remained silent.

Raymond walked slowly toward Preston.

He stopped only a few feet away.

"You've had years to tell Emily the truth."

"You chose not to."

He looked toward the detectives.

"When that letter is opened..."

"...I want every word documented."

Detective Harris nodded.

"It will be."

Preston's breathing became uneven.

The envelope wasn't supposed to exist anymore.

He had hidden it years ago.

Long before Vanessa.

Long before the missing money.

Long before today.

He had convinced himself he would eventually destroy it.

Instead...

He had forgotten where he hid it.

And now the police had found it.

The younger detective looked at Preston carefully.

"You seem more worried about that letter than twenty-eight million dollars."

Preston didn't deny it.

Because the money could be explained.

Perhaps not forgiven.

But explained.

The letter could not.

Whatever was written inside had the power to destroy something far more valuable than his career.

It could destroy the last fragile piece of Emily's trust.

Detective Harris gently took Preston's arm.

"It's time."

They began walking toward the door once again.

Just before Preston disappeared into the hallway, the boardroom doors opened from the outside.

A nurse stood there, breathing hard.

She looked directly at Raymond.

"Mr. Saint Claire."

"What is it?" Raymond asked.

The nurse swallowed.

"It's Emily."

Raymond's face changed instantly.

"What happened?"

The nurse took a shaky breath.

"She just asked for divorce papers."

The room fell silent again.

But the nurse wasn't finished.

"And..."

She looked directly at Preston.

"...she says she remembers something from the day her father died."

Preston froze.

His entire body went rigid.

Because there was one secret...

One terrible secret...

May you like

About that day.

And he had spent seven years praying Emily would never remember it.
