Chapter 2 - The Name Above Every Door

The hallway fell into complete silence.

No one moved.

No one even seemed to breathe.

Preston stared at the black access card in Raymond Saint Claire's hand.

His confident smile slowly faded.

Vanessa looked from Raymond to the hospital executives.

Then back to Preston.

"You told me your family owned this place."

Preston forced a laugh.

"I do."

"My grandfather founded the Whitmore Foundation."

Raymond raised an eyebrow.

"He did."

"And my sister saved it."

Preston's face stiffened.

The Chief Legal Counsel quietly stepped forward.

"Mr. Saint Claire is correct."

"The Whitmore Foundation donated the original land."

"The Saint Claire family acquired controlling ownership twenty-three years ago."

Vanessa blinked.

"What?"

The attorney continued.

"The hospital has been privately controlled by Saint Claire Holdings ever since."

Preston's eyes widened.

"That's impossible."

"I've sat on the board for years."

Raymond gave a faint smile.

"No."

"You attended board dinners."

"There's a difference."

One of the executives lowered his eyes, hiding a smile.

Preston suddenly felt every person in the hallway watching him.

"You can't embarrass me like this."

Raymond's expression never changed.

"I haven't started."

The Director of Security approached quietly.

"Sir."

"The surveillance footage has been secured."

"Three camera angles."

"Clear audio."

"And several witnesses."

Raymond nodded.

"Excellent."

He turned toward Vanessa.

"Ms. Cross."

She lifted her chin.

"I'd like my attorney."

"You'll need one."

Her confidence cracked for the first time.

"This is ridiculous."

"I barely touched her."

A calm voice interrupted.

"I disagree."

Everyone turned.

The elderly man who had been sitting with his wife slowly stood.

He folded his newspaper.

"I saw the entire thing."

"You kicked that young woman."

"And you smiled afterward."

His wife nodded firmly.

"So did I."

Another nurse stepped forward.

"I witnessed it too."

Then another voice.

"So did I."

Within seconds, four separate witnesses had spoken.

Vanessa's face lost its color.

Preston stepped closer to Raymond.

"There has to be a way to settle this privately."

Raymond looked directly into his eyes.

"Why?"

"So the newspapers don't find out."

Raymond almost laughed.

"My concern isn't the newspapers."

"My concern is the woman carrying my niece's child."

Preston opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Just then, the elevator doors opened again.

Dr. Allison Brooks hurried into the hallway.

She was one of the hospital's top maternal-fetal specialists.

She walked directly toward Raymond.

"She's stable."

Raymond finally exhaled.

"But..."

His eyes narrowed.

"But what?"

"There are signs of abdominal trauma."

"We're monitoring the baby closely."

"We won't know the full impact for several hours."

The hallway became painfully quiet.

Raymond slowly closed his eyes.

Only for a second.

When he opened them again, something had changed.

The warmth was gone.

Every executive recognized that look.

It was the same expression Raymond wore before firing an entire executive team five years earlier.

Cold.

Precise.

Merciless.

He faced Preston again.

"Tell me something."

Preston swallowed.

"Did you see Vanessa kick Emily?"

He hesitated.

"I..."

Raymond waited.

"I didn't think—"

"I didn't ask what you thought."

"I asked what you saw."

Preston looked away.

"...Yes."

"And did you stop her?"

Silence.

"No."

"And after she assaulted your pregnant wife..."

Raymond took one slow step forward.

"...you told Emily not to embarrass you."

Preston's shoulders dropped.

"It wasn't like that."

"It was exactly like that."

Raymond looked toward the Chief Legal Counsel.

"Prepare civil action."

Then toward Security.

"Contact city police."

Finally toward Human Resources.

"Begin revoking Mr. Whitmore's executive privileges."

Preston's head snapped up.

"You can't."

"I have unrestricted access."

"You had unrestricted access."

Raymond corrected him.

"Past tense."

The Director of Security stepped forward.

"Mr. Whitmore."

"I'll need your executive badge."

Preston laughed in disbelief.

"This is insane."

"I've worked here for twelve years."

The security officer remained polite.

"And today is your last day entering restricted areas."

Vanessa grabbed Preston's arm.

"Say something."

"Fix this."

For the first time since arriving, Preston looked genuinely afraid.

He realized something terrible.

He had never actually known who held the power.

He had simply inherited the illusion of it.

At that exact moment, every elevator in the hospital chimed.

Doctors.

Administrators.

Department heads.

Board members.

Nearly twenty senior leaders stepped into the hallway.

Not because of Preston.

Because Raymond Saint Claire had arrived.

One after another, they greeted him respectfully.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Saint Claire."

"It's good to see you, sir."

"We came as soon as we heard."

Each greeting drove another crack through Preston's confidence.

Vanessa whispered,

"Why are they all here?"

Preston couldn't answer.

Because he finally understood what Emily had known all along.

The hospital wasn't named Whitmore–Saint Claire as a tribute.

The Whitmore name had simply remained on the building.

The Saint Claire name controlled everything behind the doors.

Raymond looked toward the Labor and Delivery unit.

Then back at Preston.

His voice stayed calm.

"If my niece and her baby are healthy..."

He paused.

"...you'll lose your career."

Another pause.

"But if either of them has been permanently harmed..."

May you like

His eyes locked onto Preston's.

"...your career will be the smallest thing you lose."
