Chapter 3 - The Truth Buried in the Boardroom

No one dared to speak after Raymond’s final words.
The silence was heavier than any argument.
Preston stood frozen.
For the first time in years, he looked like a man who had run out of excuses.
Vanessa slowly released his arm.
"What does he mean?"
Her voice trembled.
Preston didn't answer.
He couldn't.
The Director of Security stepped forward again.
"Mr. Whitmore."
"Your executive badge."
Preston hesitated.
"I said... your badge."
Reluctantly, Preston unclipped the silver identification card from his jacket.
The officer accepted it without emotion.
Then he handed Preston a plain visitor badge.
"You may remain in public areas until instructed otherwise."
Preston stared at the temporary badge.
He had once walked through every restricted door in the hospital.
Now he couldn't even enter the executive elevators.
Vanessa looked horrified.
"This can't be happening."
Raymond ignored both of them.
Instead, he turned toward the Chief Legal Counsel.
"Schedule an emergency board meeting."
The attorney nodded.
"Within the hour?"
"No."
Raymond glanced at his watch.
"Within thirty minutes."
"Every voting member."
"No exceptions."
The attorney immediately began making calls.
One by one, executives hurried away.
The news spread through the hospital faster than anyone expected.
Doctors whispered in operating rooms.
Nurses exchanged nervous glances at nursing stations.
Administrative assistants quietly refreshed their email inboxes.
Everyone had received the same message.
Emergency Executive Board Meeting. Attendance Required.
No agenda.
No explanation.
That alone was enough to make seasoned executives nervous.
Preston watched people rush past him.
Not one of them stopped to greet him.
Not one asked if he was all right.
It was as though he had already disappeared.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"They're overreacting."
"It was one kick."
An older nurse looked directly at her.
"No."
"It was an assault."
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"You people act like she's royalty."
The nurse answered calmly.
"No."
"We treat every pregnant woman like she matters."
Vanessa had no reply.
Meanwhile, inside Labor and Delivery, Emily lay quietly in a private observation room.
The fetal heart monitor filled the room with a steady rhythm.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Each sound eased a little of the fear inside her.
Dr. Allison Brooks smiled gently.
"Your baby has a strong heartbeat."
Emily closed her eyes in relief.
"Thank God."
"We'll continue monitoring you for several hours."
"We're being extra cautious."
Emily nodded.
"I understand."
The doctor hesitated.
"Your uncle asked me to tell you something."
Emily looked up.
"He said not to worry about anything outside this room."
"He'll handle it."
A small smile appeared on Emily's face.
That sounded exactly like Uncle Raymond.
He never made promises he couldn't keep.
Across the hospital, the executive boardroom slowly filled.
A long walnut table stretched across the center of the room.
Framed photographs of the hospital's history lined the walls.
One picture caught Preston's attention.
It showed the ribbon-cutting ceremony from decades earlier.
His grandfather stood proudly beside another man.
Raymond's father.
Until today, Preston had always believed his grandfather had been the central figure in that photograph.
Now he noticed something different.
The ribbon-cutting scissors had been handed to Raymond's father.
His grandfather had merely stood beside him.
Had he misunderstood the family's history all along?
The board members took their seats.
No one spoke to Preston.
Technically, he wasn't even supposed to be there anymore.
But Raymond had allowed him to stay.
For one reason.
He wanted Preston to hear the truth with everyone else.
The large wooden doors opened.
Raymond entered.
Every person in the room stood.
Not because they had to.
Because they respected him.
Raymond acknowledged them with a slight nod.
Then he sat at the head of the table.
The room remained silent until he spoke.
"Thank you for coming on such short notice."
He folded his hands.
"This meeting concerns an assault that occurred forty-three minutes ago inside this hospital."
Several board members exchanged concerned looks.
Raymond continued.
"The victim is my niece."
No one interrupted.
"The suspect assaulted a pregnant patient."
He paused.
"While standing beside her husband."
Preston lowered his eyes.
"The husband," Raymond continued, "is one of our executives."
Now every pair of eyes turned toward Preston.
Some looked shocked.
Others looked disappointed.
A few simply looked angry.
Raymond reached for a black remote resting on the table.
He pressed a button.
A large screen descended from the ceiling.
The security footage appeared.
Crystal clear.
Every camera angle.
Every word.
Every second.
The room watched in complete silence as Vanessa's heel slammed into Emily's side.
Then Preston's voice echoed through the speakers.
"Don't make a scene."
Several board members visibly flinched.
One woman quietly covered her mouth.
Another man shook his head in disbelief.
The video continued.
Emily calmly making the phone call.
Raymond answering immediately.
The screen finally went black.
No one spoke.
The silence lasted nearly a full minute.
Then Raymond looked around the room.
His voice was calm.
"This hospital was built on one promise."
"Every patient deserves dignity."
He turned toward Preston.
"You forgot that."
Then he slid a thick manila folder across the table.
It stopped directly in front of Preston.
The cover contained only six words.
Confidential Investigation – Preston Whitmore.
Preston stared at the file.
His face drained of color.

Slowly...
His shaking hand reached for it.
