Chapter 1 - The Man Who Never Used the Public Elevator

The four security officers stepped into the hallway without saying a word.

Their polished shoes echoed across the marble floor.

Every conversation nearby came to an abrupt stop.

Even the nurses behind the reception desk straightened instinctively.

The lead officer scanned the hallway once.

Then his eyes landed on Emily.

His expression changed immediately.

He walked straight toward her.

"Mrs. Whitmore."

His voice was calm but urgent.

"Are you injured?"

Emily nodded once.

"My baby is moving."

She paused.

"But she kicked me."

She pointed toward Vanessa.

No drama.

No raised voice.

Just facts.

The officer looked at the growing red mark beneath Emily's maternity dress.

His jaw tightened.

Another officer quietly spoke into the radio clipped to his shoulder.

"Medical response requested.

Third floor.

Possible assault involving a pregnant patient."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Oh, please."

"It was barely a push."

Preston let out an annoyed laugh.

"This is getting ridiculous."

"My wife is emotional."

"She's always been dramatic."

Emily didn't respond.

She simply watched him.

The same man who once promised to stand beside her through every hardship.

The same man who now couldn't even acknowledge what everyone had just witnessed.

A young nurse stepped closer.

"I saw it."

Everyone turned toward her.

She swallowed nervously.

"The woman in the white coat kicked Mrs. Whitmore."

"I saw everything."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"You must be mistaken."

The nurse shook her head.

"I'm not."

"The security cameras saw it too."

Vanessa glanced toward the camera above the elevator.

For the first time, uncertainty crossed her face.

Preston quickly stepped between Vanessa and the officers.

"There has to be some misunderstanding."

"This is a private family matter."

The lead officer didn't move.

"No, sir."

"It became a hospital matter the second a patient was assaulted."

Preston frowned.

"Do you even know who I am?"

The officer answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

"I also know exactly who she is."

He nodded respectfully toward Emily.

That single gesture made Preston's confidence falter.

Before he could ask another question, the hallway doors opened again.

This time, no one needed an introduction.

A tall man in his late sixties entered with measured steps.

His silver hair was perfectly combed.

His navy suit looked understated, yet unmistakably expensive.

Behind him walked two hospital executives.

The Chief Medical Officer.

The Chief Legal Counsel.

And the Director of Security.

Every employee in the hallway immediately stood straighter.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Saint Claire."

The greeting echoed from more than one voice.

Raymond Saint Claire acknowledged no one.

His eyes searched the hallway until they found Emily.

He crossed the distance faster than anyone expected.

"Em."

His voice softened instantly.

"What happened?"

Emily looked up at him.

"I was on my way to my appointment."

She took a slow breath.

"Vanessa kicked me."

Raymond looked down.

He noticed the red mark beneath her dress.

Then he noticed her trembling hand.

His face remained calm.

Only his eyes changed.

Cold.

Controlled.

Dangerously quiet.

He gently rested a hand on Emily's shoulder.

"Has a doctor examined you yet?"

"Not yet."

He turned toward the Chief Medical Officer.

"Take her to Labor and Delivery."

"Now."

"No waiting."

"No paperwork."

"No exceptions."

The physician nodded immediately.

"I'll personally oversee her examination."

Emily hesitated.

"My phone."

Raymond smiled gently.

"I'll take care of everything else."

She searched his face for a moment.

Then she nodded.

Two nurses carefully helped Emily into a wheelchair.

As she was wheeled toward Labor and Delivery, she glanced back only once.

Preston didn't follow her.

He stayed beside Vanessa.

Emily looked away.

That told her everything she needed to know.

The elevator doors closed.

Silence settled over the hallway.

Raymond slowly turned around.

His warm expression disappeared completely.

He faced Preston.

"So."

His voice was almost conversational.

"You let another woman assault my niece."

Preston forced a smile.

"Mr. Saint Claire, I think you've misunderstood."

"This is simply a disagreement between husband and wife."

Raymond said nothing.

Instead, he looked toward the Director of Security.

"Was the hallway camera recording?"

"Yes, sir."

"Audio included?"

"Yes, sir."

"Good."

Raymond nodded once.

"Lock the footage."

"No copies."

"No deletions."

"Notify IT."

"If a single frame disappears, everyone responsible loses their job before sunset."

"Yes, sir."

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"This is insane."

"Do you know who I am?"

Raymond looked at her for the first time.

"I don't."

His eyes never blinked.

"And unless you leave this building in the next sixty seconds, I don't particularly care."

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"You can't throw me out."

"My boyfriend's family owns this hospital."

The hallway became completely silent.

Even Preston didn't speak.

Raymond slowly turned his head toward him.

A faint smile appeared.

It wasn't friendly.

It was the smile of a man who had just been handed proof that someone had lied for far too long.

"Is that what you've been telling people?"

Preston felt his throat tighten.

Raymond reached into his suit pocket.

He pulled out a small black access card.

He held it up between two fingers.

Then he spoke one sentence that made every executive in the hallway stop breathing.

May you like

"No, Preston."

"My family owns this hospital."
