Chapter 6 - The Secret Inside the Briefcase

The boardroom remained silent.

Every eye was fixed on Preston.

For the first time that day, he looked genuinely terrified.

Not embarrassed.

Not angry.

Terrified.

Raymond noticed it immediately.

His voice stayed calm.

"What was in that briefcase, Preston?"

Preston shook his head.

"I don't know."

The answer came too quickly.

Too smoothly.

The Chief Legal Counsel closed the folder in front of her.

"That isn't true."

"The detectives have already inventoried part of its contents."

Preston swallowed.

His throat felt dry.

Raymond folded his hands.

"Then let's hear it."

The attorney stood.

"There were original financial ledgers."

"Unsigned contracts."

"Several cashier's checks."

"And one encrypted flash drive."

She paused.

"The flash drive was hidden inside a false compartment."

A murmur spread around the table.

The Chief Financial Officer frowned.

"A false compartment?"

The attorney nodded.

"It appears someone went to great lengths to conceal it."

Raymond looked directly at Preston.

"Why?"

Preston forced himself to remain calm.

"I've never seen that drive."

The younger detective, who had remained near the door, spoke for the first time.

"We expected you to say that."

He placed a transparent evidence bag on the table.

Inside was the black flash drive.

Attached to it was a small white label.

One fingerprint had already been highlighted.

The detective slid another document beside it.

"Preliminary fingerprint analysis."

He looked at Preston.

"The only identifiable print belongs to you."

The room fell quiet once more.

Preston stared at the evidence bag.

His breathing became shallow.

Raymond noticed.

"So."

He leaned forward slightly.

"Would you like to change your answer?"

Several long seconds passed.

Finally, Preston lowered his head.

"...Yes."

"I've seen it."

The confession hung in the air.

"What's on it?" Raymond asked.

Preston hesitated.

"I don't know everything."

"You created it."

"I know."

"So tell us."

Preston rubbed both hands across his face.

"It wasn't supposed to become this."

"No one ever plans for that," Raymond replied.

The detective carefully connected the flash drive to a secured forensic laptop.

A progress bar appeared on the screen.

Encrypted files.

Dozens of them.

The forensic specialist entered a security key.

One by one, the folders unlocked.

The first folder appeared.

Expense Records.

The second.

Private Transfers.

The third.

Executive Authorizations.

Then another.

Its name immediately caught everyone's attention.

Project Legacy.

The detective clicked it.

Several spreadsheets appeared.

Alongside scanned contracts.

And photographs.

The Chief Financial Officer leaned closer.

His eyes widened.

"Oh... my God."

Raymond looked at the screen.

"What is it?"

The CFO pointed toward a column of numbers.

"Hospital construction funds."

He scrolled farther.

"They were redirected."

"Millions of dollars."

Another executive leaned forward.

"Redirected where?"

The answer appeared in the next column.

Private investment accounts.

Luxury real estate.

Offshore holdings.

None of them belonged to the hospital.

The attorney quietly whispered,

"This is embezzlement."

Preston closed his eyes.

The word hit harder than he expected.

Raymond remained composed.

"How much?"

The CFO continued reading.

His face grew paler with each page.

"I can't calculate everything yet."

"But the preliminary estimate..."

He stopped.

Raymond waited.

"...exceeds twenty-eight million dollars."

Several people gasped.

One board member removed his glasses.

Another slowly sat back in disbelief.

Twenty-eight million.

Not accounting mistakes.

Not unauthorized expenses.

A carefully organized scheme.

Years in the making.

Raymond looked at Preston.

"Were you acting alone?"

Preston answered immediately.

"Yes."

The detective quietly shook his head.

"I don't believe that."

He opened another folder.

Inside were email chains.

Electronic approvals.

Digital signatures.

Several names appeared repeatedly.

Current executives.

Former contractors.

Outside consultants.

The detective looked around the room.

"This operation required multiple participants."

The atmosphere instantly changed.

Board members glanced nervously at one another.

Someone else in this very room might be involved.

Raymond noticed every reaction.

He had spent decades reading people.

Fear always revealed itself.

Sometimes through words.

More often through silence.

His eyes stopped on one particular board member.

Richard Holloway.

Vice President of Facilities.

Richard had remained unusually quiet.

His forehead glistened with sweat.

His hands never stopped tapping the edge of the table.

Raymond spoke casually.

"Richard."

Richard looked up.

"Yes?"

"You seem uncomfortable."

Richard forced a smile.

"It's been... an unusual afternoon."

"It certainly has."

Raymond held his gaze.

"For everyone."

Richard nodded.

Too quickly.

Far too quickly.

The detective noticed it too.

Without saying a word, he wrote something in his notebook.

Meanwhile, another forensic analyst opened the final folder on the flash drive.

Its title was only one word.

Insurance.

Inside were dozens of scanned documents.

Life insurance policies.

Disability policies.

Corporate beneficiary forms.

One file stood out.

It was labeled:

Emily Whitmore – Updated Beneficiary.

Raymond frowned.

"Open it."

The analyst clicked.

The document filled the screen.

Every face in the room hardened.

Emily's life insurance policy had been changed three months earlier.

The insured amount had doubled.

The primary beneficiary...

Preston Whitmore.

No surprise there.

But another document appeared beneath it.

A handwritten note.

Unsigned.

Undated.

Only one sentence.

"Once the baby is gone, everything becomes simple."

The room went completely still.

No one breathed.

No one spoke.

Raymond slowly rose to his feet.

His eyes remained fixed on the screen.

Then he turned toward Preston.

For the first time that day...

There was unmistakable fury in his voice.

"Tell me..."

He took one slow step forward.

"...why was your wife's life insurance increased just three months before today's assault?"

Preston opened his mouth.

No words came out.

Before he could answer, Detective Harris's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

He looked at Raymond.

"Sir..."

"We just received another warrant."

Raymond frowned.

"For whom?"

The detective took a slow breath.

"For the arrest..."

May you like

He looked directly at Preston.

"...of Preston Whitmore."
