Chapter 11 - The Dead Man’s Access Card

The red emergency lights painted the hallway in an eerie glow.
The hospital alarm continued to pulse overhead.
"Security lockdown initiated."
"All exits are now sealed."
Detective Harris reached for his flashlight.
"Move."
"Now."
Two detectives sprinted toward the executive server room.
Four security officers followed close behind.
Raymond stayed beside Emily.
His first priority was clear.
"No one leaves her side."
The Director of Security nodded immediately.
"You have my word."
Two armed hospital security officers positioned themselves outside Emily's room.
Another stood inside the doorway.
Emily looked at Raymond.
"Someone is trying to destroy evidence."
Raymond nodded.
"I believe so."
"But they're too late."
At least, that was what he hoped.
Three floors away, the executive server room remained locked.
The electronic panel flashed green.
ACCESS GRANTED
Detective Harris frowned.
"Stand back."
A security officer inserted a master override key.
The heavy steel door swung open.
The room was empty.
Rows of humming servers filled the space.
Cold air rushed into the hallway.
"No one here," a detective called out.
Harris wasn't convinced.
"Search everything."
Another officer pointed toward the floor.
"Fresh footprints."
Dust from a maintenance panel had been disturbed.
The footprints led toward the back wall.
Harris followed them.
The final server cabinet looked ordinary.
Until he noticed a faint scratch near its base.
He pushed against it.
Nothing happened.
A maintenance technician stepped forward.
"Wait."
"This cabinet shouldn't move."
He examined the hinges.
"They're new."
Using a pry bar, the officers forced the cabinet away from the wall.
Everyone froze.
Behind it was a narrow steel door.
Hidden.
No markings.
No handle.
Only an electronic keypad.
Detective Harris looked at the maintenance technician.
"Did you know this was here?"
The man shook his head.
"I've worked here twelve years."
"I've never seen it."
Back in the maternity suite, Emily couldn't stop thinking.
Richard's final words echoed in her mind.
Board Chairman.
Installed.
Not elected.
She closed her eyes.
A memory surfaced.
Small.
Almost forgotten.
The annual hospital charity gala.
Three months earlier.
She remembered walking into Preston's home office late at night.
He had quickly closed his laptop.
She had laughed.
"Working again?"
He smiled nervously.
"Just boring board business."
Then his phone rang.
He answered immediately.
She remembered hearing only one sentence.
"Yes, Mr. Caldwell."
Emily's eyes opened.
Raymond noticed.
"What is it?"
"I remember a name."
"What name?"
"Caldwell."
Raymond became very still.
"Are you certain?"
She nodded slowly.
"I've never forgotten unusual names."
"He called someone Mr. Caldwell."
Raymond exchanged a glance with the Chief Legal Counsel.
The attorney's expression changed instantly.
"There isn't a Caldwell on the current board."
"There used to be."
Raymond finished the sentence.
"Arthur Caldwell."
Emily frowned.
"Who is he?"
Raymond's face hardened.
"He was chairman."
"Until five years ago."
"What happened?"
"He resigned."
"At least..."
Raymond looked toward the dark hallway.
"...that's what everyone believed."
Inside the server room, the maintenance technician finally bypassed the keypad.
The hidden steel door unlocked with a loud click.
Detective Harris slowly opened it.
A narrow staircase disappeared into darkness.
One detective shined his flashlight downward.
"It goes below the basement."
"How is that possible?"
The maintenance technician looked confused.
"There are no blueprints showing this level."
Harris drew his service weapon.
"We're going down."
The detectives descended carefully.
Each step echoed.
The air grew colder.
At the bottom waited another door.
This one was already open.
Inside was a small room.
No windows.
No furniture.
Only shelves.
Hundreds of storage boxes.
Most were labeled with years.
2018
2019
2020
One shelf held boxes marked only with executive names.
Whitmore.
Holloway.
Ellis.
And one more.
Caldwell.
Detective Harris carefully opened the Caldwell box.
Inside were financial records.
Old board minutes.
Personal notebooks.
Then...
A cassette tape.
The detective held it up.
"Who still uses these?"
An evidence technician examined the label.
Handwritten.
Faded.
It read:
Emergency Meeting – Do Not Destroy.
Date:
Seven years earlier.
The exact week Thomas Bennett had died.
Raymond's phone rang.
Detective Harris.
He answered immediately.
"What did you find?"
Harris didn't waste time.
"A hidden archive."
"And something you need to hear."
"What is it?"
"A recording."
"Dated the week Emily's father died."
Raymond closed his eyes briefly.
"I'll be there."
Emily immediately stood.
"I'm coming too."
Dr. Brooks stepped in front of her.
"No."
"You need bed rest."
Emily looked determined.
"My father is on that recording."
Raymond gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
"I'll bring it back."
"I promise."
Emily reluctantly sat down.
"But don't leave anything out."
"I won't."
Twenty minutes later, everyone gathered inside a secure conference room.
The cassette player had been cleaned and connected.
The evidence technician inserted the tape.
The reels began to spin.
Static filled the speakers.
Then voices.
Several men.
One was unmistakable.
Jonathan Whitmore.
Another belonged to Thomas Bennett.
Emily recognized her father's voice instantly.
Tears filled her eyes.
Then a third man spoke.
Calm.
Confident.
Cold.
Raymond's expression changed.
"I know that voice."
Detective Harris looked at him.
"Who is it?"
Raymond answered quietly.
"Arthur Caldwell."
The recording continued.
Thomas Bennett sounded angry.
"I won't sign."
Caldwell laughed softly.
"You don't have a choice."
Jonathan interrupted.
"Arthur, that's enough."
Then...
A fourth voice entered the conversation.
Everyone in the room looked at one another.
No one expected it.
Emily covered her mouth.
Raymond slowly stood.
Because he recognized that voice immediately.
It belonged to someone who was still working inside the hospital.
Someone everyone trusted.
Someone who had been standing beside them all day.
And the first words spoken on the tape were chilling.
"If Thomas refuses..."
A brief pause.
May you like
Then the voice finished the sentence.
"...we'll make sure he never becomes a problem again."
