Chapter 7: The Voice I Never Wanted to Recognize

Chapter 7: The Voice I Never Wanted to Recognize
The recording ended.
No one in the room moved.
The silence felt heavier than any scream.
Detective Morales looked at me.
He didn't have to ask.

He already knew.
I slowly closed my eyes.
"I know that voice."
My own words barely sounded real.
"It was my mother."
No one argued.
No one questioned me.
Because they had heard it too.
The calm tone.
The measured pauses.
The unmistakable voice of Eleanor Carter.
The woman who had raised me.
The woman who had kissed Sophie's forehead just hours before the wedding.
The woman who had quietly helped set a trap for her own granddaughter.
I covered my face with both hands.
Every childhood memory suddenly felt different.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every family dinner.
I had spent years believing my mother simply loved Preston more.
Now I realized...
She hadn't just favored him.
She had protected him.
Again.
And again.
No matter who got hurt.
Even if that someone was an eight-year-old child.
Detective Morales finally spoke.
"We'll have the recording authenticated."
"We'll compare the voice to known samples."
He looked directly at me.
"But between this recording..."
"The surveillance footage..."
"The eyewitnesses..."
"And the photographs..."
"We already have substantial evidence."
I nodded.
But I wasn't listening anymore.
One question echoed inside my mind.
Why?
Why would a grandmother help destroy her own granddaughter?
Across town...
Eleanor Carter sat alone in the library of the family estate.
The wedding guests had finally gone home.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
She stared at an old family photograph resting on the fireplace.
Preston at age ten.
Me at eight.
Our father standing proudly behind us.
Our mother smiling beside him.
It looked like a perfect family.
It had never been one.
Her phone rang.
The caller ID read:
Preston.
She answered immediately.
"Is it done?"
"No."
His voice shook.
"The police have everything."
Eleanor stood abruptly.
"What do you mean everything?"
"The cameras."
"The witnesses."
"The recordings."
Silence.
Then...
"You told me there weren't any microphones."
Preston's breathing became uneven.
"I didn't know."
Her hand tightened around the phone.
"You fool."
Meanwhile...
Lauren sat inside her car in the hotel parking garage.
The envelope rested on the passenger seat.
She had already photographed every page.
Then she made a decision.
One she never imagined making on her wedding night.
She drove directly to the Chicago Police Department.
Back at Mercy General...
Sophie woke slowly.
She looked around the room.
The first thing she noticed wasn't me.
It was the detective.
She smiled shyly.
"Hi."
Detective Morales smiled back.
"Hi, Sophie."
"I brought you something."
He reached into a paper bag.
Inside was a coloring book.
And a fresh box of crayons.
Sophie's eyes lit up.
"Really?"
"They're yours."
She hugged the box to her chest.
"Thank you."
He pulled up a chair beside her bed.
"Can I ask you something?"
She nodded.
"Did Uncle Preston ever say anything strange to you before tonight?"
Sophie thought for a moment.
Then...
"Yes."
Both of us leaned forward.
"What did he say?"
"He asked if I liked playing hide-and-seek."
My heartbeat quickened.
"And then?"
"He said..."
She frowned, trying to remember.
"'Sometimes the best hiding place...'"
She looked up at us.
"'...is inside someone's pocket.'"
The room went completely still.
Detective Morales slowly wrote every word down.
That wasn't a joke.
That was rehearsal.
He had planted the idea hours before the reception.
At police headquarters...
Lauren walked through the front doors carrying the leather briefcase.
The desk sergeant looked up.
"Can I help you?"
She swallowed hard.
"I think my husband committed a crime."
The sergeant's expression changed immediately.
"Please come with me."
Thirty minutes later...
Detective Morales arrived at headquarters.
Lauren was waiting in an interview room.
The briefcase sat unopened on the table.
She looked exhausted.
"I should've seen it."
Morales took a seat.
"Seen what?"
"The lies."
She slid the envelope across the table.
"I found this."
He carefully opened it.
Inside were handwritten notes.
Detailed schedules.
Printed emails.
Family calendars.
Highlighted names.
One page was labeled:
Objective: Remove Evelyn Permanently From Family Influence.
Another page listed possible methods.
Financial embarrassment.
Public humiliation.
Character destruction.
Each option had notes beside it.
The final item had a bold check mark.
Wedding reception.
Morales looked up.
"When did you find this?"
"Has anyone else seen it?"
Lauren shook her head.
"No."
She hesitated.
"There's something else."
She reached into her purse.
Pulled out a small silver flash drive.
"I found this taped beneath the false bottom of the briefcase."
The detective accepted it.
"Do you know what's on it?"
"No."
"But Preston never let that briefcase out of his sight."
Morales handed the drive to the digital evidence technician.
"See what's inside."
The technician plugged it into a secure computer.
Folders appeared instantly.
Photos.
Documents.
Videos.
Then...
One folder caught everyone's attention.
Its name was only two words.
Insurance Plan.
The technician clicked it.
The screen filled with dozens of files.
At the very top...
A video labeled:
Practice Run.mp4
Everyone exchanged uneasy glances.
Morales pressed Play.
The video opened.
The image was shaky.
It looked like someone recording secretly from across a park.
A little girl laughed as she played on a swing.
She had blonde hair.
She wore a pink jacket.
My heart nearly stopped.
It was Sophie.
The timestamp showed it had been recorded...
Three months before the wedding.

Then Preston's voice quietly whispered from behind the camera.
"She never sees me coming."
