Chapter 13: Storage Unit 417

Chapter 13: Storage Unit 417

The warehouse doors rolled open.

A cold draft swept through the building.

Detective Morales stepped inside first.

Two crime scene technicians followed.

Then Richard Carter.

Lauren walked in last.

Everyone stopped.

Floor-to-ceiling shelves filled the storage unit.

Perfectly organized.

Every box had a label.

Every folder had a date.

Nothing looked abandoned.

It looked...

Archived.

As if someone had spent decades preserving the truth.

Officer Keller slowly turned in a circle.

"My God..."

"This isn't storage."

"It's a library."

Morales nodded.

"A library of evidence."

The first shelf contained photo albums.

Every binder was marked by year.

1993.

1994.

1995.

They continued without interruption.

All the way to the present.

The detective pulled down the oldest album.

Inside were photographs of the Carter family.

Birthday parties.

School events.

Christmas mornings.

Ordinary moments.

Until he reached one particular page.

A picture of four-year-old Preston.

Standing beside two-year-old Evelyn.

She was crying.

He was smiling.

Written beneath the photograph...

In neat handwriting...

"Five minutes before he pushed her down the basement stairs."

Richard covered his face.

"I remember that day."

"Eleanor said Evelyn tripped."

Morales quietly turned the page.

The next photograph showed bruises on my tiny arms.

Another handwritten note.

"Pediatrician questioned the explanation."

A second shelf contained VHS tapes.

Hundreds of them.

Each one labeled carefully.

Family Vacation.

Birthday Party.

School Play.

Thanksgiving.

Christmas.

Lauren frowned.

"Why would someone keep all of this?"

Morales picked up one tape.

The label read:

Original Copy – Never Edited.

He looked at the evidence technician.

"Can we play it?"

The technician nodded.

A portable VHS player was brought into the unit.

The tape began.

The picture flickered.

The date appeared.

December 24, 1998.

Christmas Eve.

The Carter living room.

Tiny Evelyn opened a present.

She hugged a stuffed rabbit.

Seconds later...

Preston quietly took it while everyone was distracted.

He hid it behind the couch.

An hour later...

Eleanor began searching.

"Where did your rabbit go?"

Little Evelyn cried.

"I don't know."

Preston pointed at me.

"She probably lost it."

Eleanor sighed.

"Honestly, Evelyn."

"You need to be more responsible."

The tape continued rolling.

No one realized the camera had captured everything.

No one except the person who saved it.

Richard broke down.

"Oh, God..."

"I blamed her."

The next tape was worse.

July 2001.

The family lake house.

Young Evelyn stood near the dock wearing a bright orange life vest.

The camera zoomed in.

Preston looked around.

No adults were watching.

He quietly untied one side of the safety strap.

Then walked away.

Minutes later...

I jumped into the lake.

The vest slipped off.

The camera shook violently.

Someone screamed.

The recording ended.

The room remained silent.

Lauren slowly sat down on a folding chair.

"I can't watch anymore."

Morales opened another box.

Inside were dozens of cassette tapes.

Each one carried a typed label.

Private Family Conversations.

He selected one at random.

The tape recorder clicked.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman's voice.

Calm.

Gentle.

Lillian Saunders.

"I've raised children for thirty years."

"I've never seen a boy lie so naturally."

Another voice answered.

Richard.

"What do I do?"

Lillian sighed.

"You protect your daughter."

Richard whispered...

"Eleanor won't let me."

The tape ended.

Morales looked at Richard.

"You knew."

Richard nodded slowly.

"I was weak."

On the far wall...

One final cabinet remained locked.

Unlike everything else...

It required both a key and a combination.

Officer Keller examined it.

"No sign of forced entry."

Morales looked around.

"Search the room."

Five minutes later...

A technician discovered a small envelope taped beneath one of the shelves.

Inside...

A brass key.

And a folded note.

The handwriting matched every other label.

For the day the truth finally matters.

No signature.

Morales inserted the key.

The lock clicked open.

Inside the cabinet...

Were only three items.

A leather journal.

A sealed legal envelope.

And an old Polaroid photograph.

The photograph showed a young woman holding baby Evelyn.

Standing beside her...

Was another woman.

Smiling warmly.

Lauren picked it up.

"Is this Lillian?"

Richard stared at the picture.

Tears filled his eyes.

"Yes."

Morales pointed to the baby.

"And that's Evelyn."

Richard nodded.

Then he whispered something that made everyone stop.

"Lillian wasn't just our nanny."

The detective frowned.

"Then who was she?"

Richard slowly looked at the photograph one last time.

His voice cracked.

"She was the only person Eleanor was ever afraid of."

Before anyone could ask another question...

The evidence technician opened the sealed legal envelope.

Inside was a notarized letter.

Across the first page...

In bold type...

Were the words:

To Be Opened Only If Eleanor Carter Attempts To Destroy Another Child's Life.

The letter was signed twenty-five years earlier.
