Chapter 2: The Second Recording

Chapter 2: The Second Recording

The room fell silent.

Daniel clicked the video.

The timestamp appeared.

6:58 p.m.

Camera Seven.

Private Groom's Suite.

The recording had no sound.

Only video.

But sometimes...

The truth didn't need words.

Preston stood in front of the mirror.

His tuxedo was perfectly tailored.

His tie was flawless.

His smile was even more polished.

A few seconds later...

The suite door opened.

My mother walked inside.

She carried a small white gift bag.

Preston laughed.

She hugged him.

Then she handed him something.

Daniel paused the video.

He zoomed in.

Inside the bag was a familiar silver rectangle.

A titanium iPhone.

The same model Preston claimed had been stolen.

My stomach tightened.

Daniel pressed play again.

Preston slipped the phone into the inside pocket of his tuxedo.

He looked perfectly calm.

Perfectly prepared.

Nothing about him suggested a man worried about losing his phone.

The video continued.

Ten minutes passed.

Friends entered the room.

The best man adjusted Preston's tie.

Someone handed him a glass of champagne.

The phone never left his jacket.

Daniel fast-forwarded.

The timestamp changed.

7:36 p.m.

Only six minutes before the accusation.

Preston checked the hallway through the cracked door.

He smiled.

Then he reached into his jacket.

The phone was still there.

He slipped it into his hand.

Walked out of the room.

Daniel froze the frame.

He slowly turned toward me.

"He walked into that ballroom carrying the phone."

I couldn't answer.

I simply nodded.

Because my throat refused to work.

My brother had never lost anything.

He had entered that reception already planning to accuse my daughter.

Daniel opened another camera angle.

This one overlooked the ballroom entrance.

The same footage we had watched earlier.

Only this time...

He played it in slow motion.

Preston walked behind Sophie's chair.

He looked left.

Then right.

No one was watching.

His hand disappeared beneath her little denim jacket.

One smooth movement.

One practiced motion.

Three seconds.

That was all it took.

Then he stepped away.

Smiling.

A few minutes later...

He grabbed the microphone.

"My phone is missing."

The performance had already begun.

I covered my mouth.

Every memory from the reception suddenly felt different.

His fake panic.

His dramatic speech.

His confident walk toward our table.

He had never searched anyone else.

Because he already knew exactly where the phone would be found.

Exactly where he had hidden it.

Daniel closed the laptop for a moment.

"I've worked in hospitality for nineteen years."

"I've testified in fraud cases."

"I've dealt with insurance scams."

"I've seen fake injuries."

"I've seen staged robberies."

He looked directly at me.

"I've never seen anyone frame an eight-year-old child."

Neither had I.

Until tonight.

The hospital room door opened.

A police officer stepped inside.

He removed his hat.

"Ms. Carter?"

"Yes."

"I'm Detective Ryan Morales."

"We received a report of an assault involving a minor."

His eyes briefly rested on Sophie sleeping in the hospital bed.

"The doctors informed us she required six stitches."

I nodded.

"They also told us the injury was caused by a wooden object."

My voice remained steady.

"My brother hit her."

Detective Morales opened a notebook.

"Can you describe exactly what happened?"

Before I answered...

Daniel spoke.

"I have security footage."

The detective looked at him.

"You do?"

Daniel placed the laptop on the table again.

"Multiple camera angles."

"The recordings have already been backed up."

"I also secured the original files."

Detective Morales stopped writing.

His expression became serious.

"Show me."

Twenty minutes later...

The detective watched every second.

He never interrupted.

He never looked away.

When the final frame ended...

He leaned back in his chair.

"Well..."

He let out a slow breath.

"That changes this investigation."

He pointed at the screen.

"That footage clearly shows Mr. Preston Carter placing the phone inside the child's jacket."

Daniel nodded.

"It does."

The detective continued.

"And if that's authentic..."

"It also establishes motive."

I frowned.

"Motive?"

He looked at me.

"He created a false accusation."

"When your daughter denied stealing the phone..."

"He escalated."

"He assaulted the victim in front of hundreds of witnesses."

The words sounded unreal.

Victim.

Assault.

Evidence.

Those weren't television terms anymore.

They were my daughter's reality.

Just then...

Daniel received another call from the hotel.

He answered immediately.

"Daniel Brooks."

His face changed.

"What?"

He stood up.

"When?"

The room became tense.

He slowly lowered the phone.

"What happened?"

I asked.

He looked at me gravely.

"The security supervisor just informed me..."

"Someone tried to access the surveillance server."

Detective Morales narrowed his eyes.

"Who?"

Daniel swallowed.

"The login attempt used the master management code."

"The only people with that code are me..."

He paused.

"And the owner of the Whitmore Hotel."

A chill ran through the room.

The detective immediately asked the next question.

"Did they get in?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"The system automatically locked them out."

"But whoever it was..."

"They knew exactly where the evidence was stored."

At that exact moment...

Back at the Whitmore Hotel...

Preston slammed his fist onto the groom's suite table.

"What do you mean the footage is locked?"

The nervous security contractor wiped sweat from his forehead.

"I can't erase it."

"The system rejected every access code."

Preston's face turned pale.

"There has to be another way."

The contractor hesitated.

"There is."

"But once corporate security gets involved..."

"They'll know someone tried to tamper with the evidence."

The room fell silent.

For the first time that night...

Preston wasn't angry.

He was afraid.

Because if the videos survived...

His perfect reputation wouldn't just be damaged.

It would be destroyed.

Then his phone buzzed.

A text message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.

May you like

It contained only one sentence.

"You forgot about the waitress."
