Chapter 14: Lillian's Letter

Chapter 14: Lillian's Letter

No one reached for the letter.

For a long moment...

Everyone simply stared at it.

Twenty-five years.

It had been waiting in silence for twenty-five years.

Detective Morales finally broke the seal.

The paper inside was crisp.

Protected from time.

A notary stamp covered the bottom corner.

The signature was unmistakable.

Lillian Saunders.

Morales began reading aloud.

"If this letter has been opened..."

"...then Eleanor Carter has failed to change."

The room fell silent.

"I prayed every day that I would be wrong."

"I prayed Preston would receive help."

"I prayed Evelyn would one day be safe."

"If you are reading this..."

"...none of those prayers came true."

Richard slowly lowered his head.

The letter continued.

"My name is Lillian Saunders."

"For sixteen years, I worked inside the Carter household."

"I was hired as a nanny."

"I stayed because someone had to protect Evelyn."

Lauren looked up.

"Protect her?"

Morales kept reading.

"Preston was not born cruel."

"He was taught that rules belonged to other people."

"Every lie was rewarded."

"Every act of violence was excused."

"Every consequence was shifted onto his sister."

"Eventually..."

"...he stopped believing he could ever be wrong."

Richard closed his eyes.

"I knew."

His voice barely carried across the room.

"I just never admitted it."

The next page was even harder to hear.

"The first time Preston seriously hurt Evelyn..."

"...he was four years old."

"He pushed her down the basement stairs."

"She required stitches above her left eyebrow."

Instinctively...

My hand moved to the faint scar hidden beneath my hairline.

One I had carried my entire life.

One I had been told came from falling.

It hadn't.

Lillian's words continued.

"Eleanor instructed everyone to repeat the same story."

"'Evelyn slipped.'"

"'Evelyn was careless.'"

"'Evelyn always falls.'"

"Even the family doctor questioned the explanation."

"No one listened."

Detective Morales turned another page.

There was a list.

Dates.

Places.

Incidents.

Twenty-three separate events.

Every one involved Preston harming someone.

Every one ended the same way.

No consequences.

Lauren whispered...

"My God."

Then came the paragraph that changed everything.

"On April 12, 2004..."

Richard suddenly looked up.

"I remember that date."

Morales continued reading.

"I secretly recorded a conversation between Eleanor and Preston."

"I feared no one would believe me otherwise."

Everyone froze.

A recording.

Lillian had made a recording.

Morales searched inside the envelope.

A tiny memory card fell into his hand.

It had been taped to the last page.

The evidence technician immediately placed it inside a protective case.

"Let's hope it's still readable."

Back at police headquarters...

The digital forensics team rushed the memory card into the lab.

Everyone gathered around.

The card was old.

Very old.

One technician carefully connected it through a specialized adapter.

A loading screen appeared.

Then...

One audio file.

Only one.

The timestamp read:

April 12, 2004.

Morales pressed Play.

Static filled the speakers.

Then...

A child's voice.

Mine.

"I didn't do it."

I sounded so young.

So frightened.

Then Eleanor answered.

"You'll say you did."

Little Evelyn cried.

"But I didn't."

A loud slap echoed through the recording.

Lauren gasped.

Richard closed his eyes.

No one spoke.

Then Preston laughed.

He couldn't have been older than fifteen.

"It works every time."

Eleanor chuckled softly.

"Of course it does."

"People expect good things from you."

She paused.

"And mistakes from Evelyn."

Morales looked around the room.

No one could believe what they were hearing.

The recording continued.

Preston asked one simple question.

"What if Dad finds out?"

Eleanor answered without hesitation.

"He won't."

"I'll handle your father."

Then came the sentence that explained thirty years of lies.

"Protecting you is protecting this family's future."

The audio ended.

The silence that followed felt endless.

Richard wiped tears from his face.

"I failed her."

"No."

Morales replied quietly.

"You failed both of your children."

Richard looked confused.

"The difference..."

Morales continued.

"...is that Evelyn chose to become a loving mother."

"Preston chose to become exactly what he was taught."

Just then...

A young detective rushed into the lab.

"Detective Morales."

"What is it?"

"We've located Eleanor Carter."

Everyone turned.

"Where?"

The detective swallowed.

"She wasn't hiding."

"She walked into the offices of Carter Global Holdings."

Richard frowned.

"Our family company?"

The detective nodded.

"She requested an emergency meeting with the board of directors."

Lauren looked confused.

"Why would she do that?"

Another officer entered carrying a printed email.

"It just arrived from the company's legal department."

Morales read the subject line aloud.

Emergency Transfer of Executive Authority

His eyes narrowed.

The email contained one sentence.

"Effective immediately, Eleanor Carter has removed Richard Carter as Chairman and appointed Preston Carter as Acting CEO."

Richard stared in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

The detective looked at the timestamp.

"It was signed..."

He paused.

Then looked back up.

"Twenty-three minutes after Preston was arrested."

The room fell silent.

Even from behind bars...

Someone was still trying to protect him.

May you like

And someone else...

Was preparing for the next battle.
