Chapter 6: The Recording No One Was Supposed to Hear

The tiny microphone sat inside the evidence bag.

No one spoke.

The forensic lab suddenly felt smaller.

Every investigator stared at the clear plastic pouch.

Detective Morales picked it up carefully.

"What kind of microphone is this?"

The lead technician adjusted his glasses.

"It's a professional wireless recorder."

"Very expensive."

"Not something you'd buy at a department store."

He rotated the evidence bag beneath the light.

"It was attached with industrial adhesive."

"The same adhesive found on the back of the menu board."

Morales frowned.

"So someone intentionally hid it there."

The technician nodded.

"Yes."

"And judging by the battery life..."

"It had been activated only a few hours before the reception."

Back at Mercy General Hospital...

I sat beside Sophie's bed.

She was asleep again.

Lucky the teddy bear rested beneath her arm.

For the first time all night...

She looked peaceful.

I wished I could stay in that moment forever.

Then Detective Morales walked back into the room.

His expression was impossible to read.

"They found a recording device."

I looked up.

"A microphone?"

"Yes."

"Hidden inside the menu board."

My mind raced.

"Who would do that?"

"I don't know."

"But we're going to find out."

An hour later...

The forensic technicians connected the tiny microphone to specialized recovery equipment.

The battery had died.

The casing was cracked from the impact.

But the memory chip had survived.

Barely.

A progress bar crawled across the monitor.

Recovering audio files...

Twenty percent.

Forty percent.

Seventy-two percent.

Everyone waited.

No one moved.

Finally...

The computer chimed.

Recovery Complete.

The lead technician clicked the only audio file.

Static filled the speakers.

A few muffled voices.

Laughter.

Silverware clinking against porcelain plates.

The wedding reception.

Then...

A familiar voice.

Preston.

"Relax."

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

The room froze.

Another male voice answered.

"This is insane."

"If someone finds out—"

"They won't."

Preston laughed.

"I've been getting away with things my whole life."

"My parents will back me."

"They always do."

A long pause followed.

Then the other man spoke again.

"Why her?"

"Why the little girl?"

Preston didn't hesitate.

"Because people believe adults."

"Especially successful adults."

"No one questions the golden son."

The technician instinctively looked toward Detective Morales.

Neither of them said a word.

The recording continued.

"If I accuse Evelyn..."

"She'll fight back."

"But if I accuse her daughter..."

"Evelyn becomes emotional."

"She looks unstable."

"And everyone sides with me."

Another pause.

Then came the sentence that made every person in the lab stop breathing.

"I'm not just ruining her night."

"I'm ending her life."

Detective Morales immediately paused the recording.

No one spoke.

The silence lasted nearly thirty seconds.

Finally...

The technician whispered...

"My God."

Across town...

Preston sat inside his luxury penthouse.

His wedding tuxedo still hung over a chair.

The champagne bottle remained unopened.

His phone buzzed constantly.

News alerts.

Missed calls.

Messages from relatives.

He ignored all of them.

Instead...

He opened an encrypted messaging app.

Only one conversation existed.

Unknown Contact.

Preston typed quickly.

Did you erase everything?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Finally...

A reply arrived.

No.

His heartbeat accelerated.

He typed again.

Why not?

Another reply.

Because I quit.

Nothing else.

The conversation ended.

Preston stared at the screen.

Then he threw the phone across the room.

It shattered against the wall.

For the first time in years...

He felt completely alone.

Meanwhile...

Lauren unlocked the door to the bridal suite.

She had changed out of her wedding dress.

Now she wore jeans and a gray sweater.

The room looked exactly as they had left it earlier.

Except for one thing.

A black leather briefcase rested beneath the desk.

She frowned.

It wasn't hers.

It wasn't there before.

Curious...

She opened it.

Inside were neatly organized folders.

Financial records.

Contracts.

Property documents.

Then...

A sealed envelope.

Across the front...

Written in Preston's handwriting...

Were four chilling words.

If Anything Happens...

Lauren hesitated.

Every instinct told her to close it.

Instead...

She opened the envelope.

The first page nearly slipped from her hands.

It wasn't a will.

It wasn't insurance paperwork.

It was a detailed timeline.

Dates.

Names.

Locations.

Every interaction Preston had planned with me over the past six months.

Every family gathering.

Every holiday.

Every phone call.

Every opportunity to embarrass me.

Highlighted in red...

One line stood out.

Wedding Reception – Final Public Humiliation.

Lauren's knees nearly gave out.

This hadn't been a spur-of-the-moment outburst.

It wasn't wedding stress.

It wasn't anger.

He had been planning this for months.

Back at the forensic lab...

The technicians resumed the recording.

The voices became quieter.

Someone walked closer to the hidden microphone.

Fabric rustled.

A zipper opened.

Then...

A woman's voice.

Soft.

Calm.

Familiar.

"I moved their table."

Every investigator looked at one another.

Detective Morales slowly closed his eyes.

He knew that voice.

So did I.

The technician replayed it.

Again.

And again.

There was no mistake.

The woman continued.

"They'll be close enough."

Preston laughed.

"Perfect."

Then the woman asked the question that changed the entire investigation.

"What about after everyone thinks Sophie stole the phone?"

Preston answered without emotion.

"I'll make sure Evelyn never comes back to this family again."

The recording ended with a single sentence.

The woman quietly replied...

"Just don't kill the child."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Detective Morales looked at me.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"Evelyn..."

"I believe we've just identified your brother's accomplice."

May you like

And deep inside...

I already knew exactly whose voice we had heard.
