Chapter 1: The Camera Never Lies

Chapter 1: The Camera Never Lies

The ambulance doors slammed shut just as the ballroom finally came back to life.

Behind me, voices exploded into chaos.

Some guests argued.

Others pulled out their phones.

A few simply stared.

No one had expected a wedding to turn into a crime scene.

I climbed into the ambulance beside Sophie.

A paramedic gently pressed clean gauze against the side of her head.

"It's going to sting a little, sweetheart."

Sophie flinched.

She never cried.

She just reached for my hand.

"Mom..."

Her voice was so small it nearly broke me.

"Am I in trouble?"

I felt something twist inside my chest.

"No."

I squeezed her fingers.

"You didn't do anything wrong."

She looked at me with tear-filled eyes.

"But Uncle Preston said everyone hates thieves."

I brushed a strand of blonde hair away from her face.

"Then your uncle lied."

The ambulance doors closed.

The sirens screamed through downtown Chicago.

As the vehicle sped toward Mercy General Hospital, I looked through the rear window.

The Whitmore Hotel disappeared behind us.

But I wasn't leaving defeated.

Not this time.

Inside the ballroom, Preston raised another glass of champagne.

His smile slowly returned.

He believed the nightmare was over.

His mother hugged him.

"You did what you had to do."

His father nodded.

"That girl embarrassed this family."

Several guests quietly exchanged uncomfortable glances.

One elderly woman whispered to her husband.

"Did anyone else think that looked... rehearsed?"

He frowned.

"I noticed that too."

Across the room, the hotel's general manager hurried toward the security office.

His name was Daniel Brooks.

He had managed luxury hotels for nearly twenty years.

He had seen drunken fights.

Celebrity scandals.

Even a marriage proposal interrupted by an ex-boyfriend.

But never...

A grown man striking an eight-year-old child.

He turned to the head of security.

"I want every camera angle."

The security supervisor hesitated.

"Sir... the family may not want—"

Daniel cut him off.

"I didn't ask what they want."

"I asked for the footage."

The supervisor immediately nodded.

"Yes, sir."

Forty minutes later...

The emergency room was quiet except for the steady beeping of medical monitors.

A pediatric surgeon finished examining Sophie.

"The wound required six stitches."

He looked directly at me.

"Fortunately, the skull wasn't fractured."

My knees almost gave out.

I whispered a shaky thank you.

The doctor continued.

"She's lucky."

"The impact could have been much worse."

Lucky.

That word echoed in my mind.

Lucky.

As if surviving an attack by her own uncle was somehow good fortune.

Sophie finally drifted to sleep.

Her small hand still held mine.

I kissed her forehead.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

For one moment, I considered ignoring it.

Instead, I answered.

"This is Evelyn."

A calm male voice responded.

"Ms. Carter?"

"Yes."

"My name is Daniel Brooks."

"I'm the general manager of the Whitmore Hotel."

Every muscle in my body tightened.

"I understand what happened tonight."

His voice became more serious.

"And I don't believe your daughter stole anything."

I stood so quickly that my chair scraped across the hospital floor.

"What did you say?"

"There are security cameras covering every entrance to the ballroom."

My heart skipped.

"I've already instructed my security team to preserve every recording."

I couldn't breathe.

"You have the footage?"

"Yes."

"But before I release anything..."

"There is something you need to see."

Meanwhile...

Back at the hotel...

Preston laughed with several of his closest friends.

"They'll never recover from this."

One groomsman shifted uncomfortably.

"Don't you think hitting a kid was a little extreme?"

Preston shrugged.

"She'll heal."

"My reputation wouldn't have."

The room fell silent.

Another friend slowly set down his drink.

"You really think everyone believed she stole your phone?"

Preston smirked.

"My parents did."

"That's all that matters."

He had no idea someone else was listening.

Just outside the partially open door...

A young waitress froze.

She had been delivering coffee.

Instead...

She had overheard every word.

Her hands began to shake.

She quietly backed away before anyone noticed.

Then she pulled out her own phone.

Without saying a word...

She pressed Record.

At the hospital...

Daniel Brooks arrived carrying a slim black laptop.

He introduced himself with a gentle handshake.

"I'm sorry we had to meet under these circumstances."

He placed the computer on the table.

"I've reviewed part of the footage."

He looked at sleeping Sophie.

Then back at me.

"What I'm about to show you..."

"...changes everything."

The screen flickered to life.

The timestamp appeared.

7:42 p.m.

Camera Three.

Ballroom North Entrance.

I watched Preston glance around the room.

He smiled.

Reached into his jacket.

Pulled out his titanium iPhone.

Then casually walked behind Sophie's chair.

My pulse pounded.

Frame by frame...

His hand disappeared into the pocket of her little denim jacket.

Three seconds later...

He walked away.

Empty-handed.

Daniel paused the video.

The room became completely silent.

He looked me straight in the eyes.

"Ms. Carter..."

"This wasn't a misunderstanding."

"This was premeditated."

Before I could answer...

Another notification flashed across Daniel's laptop.

Additional footage detected.

Camera Seven.

Private Groom's Suite.

Recorded thirty minutes before the reception.

Daniel frowned.

"I don't remember opening this file."

He clicked it anyway.

The first image appeared.

And both of us stared at the screen in disbelief.
