CHAPTER 9: THE PERSON ELIZABETH TRUSTED MOST

CHAPTER 9: THE PERSON ELIZABETH TRUSTED MOST
The ballroom remained frozen after the video ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The image of Elizabeth Sterling’s frightened expression was still burned into Clara’s mind.
Her mother had known.
She had known something was coming.
She had known she might not survive long enough to reveal the truth herself.
And yet, even in her final moments, Elizabeth had been thinking about Clara.
Protecting her.

Trying to save her.
Clara slowly looked around the room.
“Someone she trusted…”
Her voice was barely audible.
“Who was she talking about?”
No one answered.
Not because they didn’t hear her.
Because they were afraid of the answer.
Victor Hale looked uncomfortable.
Alexander looked away.
Even Ethan seemed unsure.
Clara noticed immediately.
“You all know something.”
Silence.
Her expression hardened.
“Don’t do this again.”
She looked at each of them.
“Don’t stand there and decide what I can handle.”
Those words hit them.
Because they knew she was right.
For sixteen years, everyone had made decisions for Clara.
Richard decided she couldn’t walk.
Doctors decided she couldn’t recover.
Family members decided she couldn’t know the truth.
But that ended tonight.
Clara stepped forward.
“I want answers.”
Alexander took a slow breath.
“There is someone your mother trusted more than anyone.”
“Who?”
He hesitated.
“Her closest friend.”
Clara frowned.
“My mother had a best friend?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Alexander looked toward Victor.
Victor closed his eyes for a moment.
Then he said:
“Victoria Blackwell.”
The name meant nothing to Clara.
But it clearly meant something to everyone else.
Ethan immediately looked at Victor.
“Victoria?”
Victor nodded.
“She was Elizabeth’s closest companion. They grew up together. They went to school together. She was the person Elizabeth trusted with every secret.”
Clara looked confused.
“Then why would she be involved?”
Alexander shook his head.
“We don’t know if she was.”
“But Elizabeth sounded afraid.”
“Yes.”
Clara looked at the recording device.
“She said the person who started everything was someone she trusted with her life.”
Victor’s expression became serious.
“Your mother trusted many people.”
He paused.
“But only a few knew everything.”
Clara turned.
“Who knew?”
Victor looked at her.
“Richard.”
“Obviously.”
“William.”
She nodded.
“And?”
Victor stayed silent.
Clara immediately noticed.
“And who else?”
Before Victor could answer, Ethan spoke.
“My father.”
Everyone looked at him.
Ethan continued.
“My father knew because Elizabeth came to him for help.”
Clara looked at him.
“Anyone else?”
Ethan slowly said:
“Victoria.”
The name hung in the air.
Clara looked down.
Her mother’s closest friend.
The person who knew her fears.
Her plans.
Her secrets.
The person who could have helped her.
Or betrayed her.
A sudden noise interrupted them.
One of the police officers rushed into the room.
“Detective!”
Everyone turned.
“What happened?”
The officer looked at Clara.
“We found something at the Sterling private facility.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“What?”
The officer handed him a folder.
“Records from the original Project Second Chance files.”
Clara immediately reached for them.
Inside were documents from years ago.
Medical reports.
Financial transactions.
Internal communications.
Then she saw something.
A signature.
Her mother’s friend.
Victoria Blackwell.
Clara’s heart sank.
“No…”
Ethan looked at the page.
“She signed these?”
The officer nodded.
“She was one of the original executives connected to the project.”
The room became silent.
Clara stared at the signature.
The same person her mother trusted.
The same person who supposedly loved her.
Had helped build the system that destroyed Clara’s life.
But then she noticed something strange.
The dates.
The documents were signed after Elizabeth disappeared.
Clara frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Everyone looked at her.
“If Victoria betrayed my mother, why would she continue working with Richard after my mother was gone?”
Nobody answered.
Clara looked closer.
There were several pages.
One document was hidden behind another.
She pulled it out.
Her eyes widened.
“What is this?”
Ethan leaned closer.
The document was a private agreement.
But the name at the top was not Richard’s.
Not William’s.
Not Victoria’s.
It belonged to Elizabeth.
Clara read the title.
CONFIDENTIAL PROTECTION AGREEMENT
Her hands began shaking.
“What does this mean?”
Alexander took the document.
His face changed.
“This…”
He stopped.
“What?”
Alexander looked at Clara.
“This means your mother was working with Victoria.”
Clara stared.
“Working with her?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did the recording make it sound like Victoria betrayed her?”
Alexander looked confused.
“Because maybe Elizabeth was trying to protect her.”
Clara froze.
“What?”
Ethan looked at the document.
“She may have wanted Richard to believe Victoria was the enemy.”
“Why?”
“So Richard wouldn’t suspect the real person helping your mother.”
The room went quiet.
A terrifying possibility appeared.
What if everyone had been looking at the wrong person?
What if Victoria wasn’t the betrayer?
What if she was the person who tried to save Elizabeth?
Clara turned the page.
At the bottom was another message.
A handwritten note.
Elizabeth’s handwriting.
Clara recognized it instantly.
“Victoria, if anything happens to me, protect Clara. Do not trust anyone in the Sterling family.”
Clara felt a chill.
Not Richard.
Not William.
The entire Sterling family.
She looked at Alexander.
“Did my mother trust you?”
The question was painful.
Alexander looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t she tell you everything?”
His expression became heavy.
“Because she was afraid.”
“Of what?”
Alexander answered quietly:
“That I was the reason Richard found out.”
The words shocked everyone.
Clara stepped back.
“What are you saying?”
Alexander looked devastated.
“I made one mistake.”
“What mistake?”
He looked at the recording device.
“I trusted the wrong person.”
A silence fell.
Then every phone in the room received another notification.
Another breaking news alert.
This time, the headline made everyone freeze.
“Missing Sterling Family Insider Found Alive After 16 Years.”
The reporter opened the article.
The photo appeared on the screen.
Clara immediately recognized the face.
A woman.
Older now.
But familiar.
Victoria Blackwell.
Alive.
And the article contained one shocking statement:
“Victoria Blackwell claims she knows the truth about what happened the night Elizabeth Sterling disappeared.”
Clara stared at the screen.
The woman who might hold the final answers had returned.
But there was one problem.
The article ended with a warning:
“Victoria Blackwell refuses to meet anyone except Clara Sterling.”
Clara looked at Ethan.
Then Alexander.
Then the screen.
After everything she had learned, one question remained.

Why had Victoria waited sixteen years?
And what secret was she still hiding?
