CHAPTER 7: THE FAMILY EMPIRE BUILT ON LIES

CHAPTER 7: THE FAMILY EMPIRE BUILT ON LIES

The ballroom went silent.

Not the ordinary silence that came after a shocking announcement.

This was different.

It was the kind of silence that came when people realized the truth was far bigger than they ever imagined.

Clara stared at Victor Hale.

Then she looked at Alexander.

Then at Ethan.

Finally, her eyes returned to Richard’s former business partner.

“My grandfather?”

The words barely left her mouth.

Victor nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Clara shook her head.

“That’s impossible.”

Her grandfather had been gone for years.

She barely remembered him.

To her, he had always been a distant figure from old family photographs.

A wealthy man who built the foundation of the Sterling empire before passing everything down to Richard.

A man everyone described as brilliant.

A man everyone respected.

“You’re lying,” Clara whispered.

Victor looked at her with sadness.

“I wish I was.”

He walked slowly toward the center of the ballroom.

Police officers watched every movement.

The reporters raised their cameras again.

The biggest scandal in the city’s history was becoming even darker.

“Your grandfather, William Sterling, created the original structure behind Project Second Chance.”

Victor spoke calmly.

“But not because he wanted to help people.”

Clara held the file tighter.

“Then why?”

Victor looked at the documents.

“Because he believed suffering created influence.”

A chill went through the room.

“He believed people trusted those who appeared to sacrifice.”

Victor continued.

“Your grandfather built his reputation by creating emotional stories. He learned that tragedy attracted attention. Attention attracted money. Money created power.”

Clara’s stomach turned.

“So he used people.”

“Yes.”

Victor looked at her.

“And when Richard inherited the empire, he continued the same strategy.”

Clara thought about everything she had seen.

The charity events.

The interviews.

The speeches.

Her father standing beside her wheelchair with tears in his eyes.

All of it had been calculated.

All of it had been part of a plan.

“But why me?” Clara asked.

Her voice broke.

“Why did they choose me?”

Victor looked down.

Because even after everything, that question was the one that hurt the most.

Not why Richard lied.

Not why doctors betrayed her.

But why she had been chosen as the sacrifice.

“Because you were perfect for their story.”

Clara froze.

Victor continued.

“You were young. You were innocent. You were Richard’s daughter.”

He paused.

“And when your accident happened, they saw an opportunity.”

Clara’s face changed.

“My accident…”

Ethan immediately looked at her.

“What?”

Clara slowly shook her head.

“I always thought I fell because I was careless.”

She looked at the wheelchair.

“I thought this was just bad luck.”

Victor’s expression became serious.

“It wasn’t.”

The room reacted instantly.

Clara felt like the air had disappeared.

“What are you saying?”

Victor opened another folder.

“This is the original investigation report.”

He handed it to her.

Clara looked down.

Her hands began trembling.

The report contained information she had never seen.

The date.

The location.

The witnesses.

And one sentence highlighted in red:

“Evidence suggests the incident may not have been accidental.”

Clara stopped breathing.

“No…”

She looked at Victor.

“No, that can’t be true.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“Clara…”

She ignored him.

“My father didn’t cause my accident.”

Nobody answered.

And that silence frightened her more than anything.

Because deep inside, she already knew.

Richard was capable of it.

The man who stole three years of her life.

The man who erased her mother’s truth.

The man who built an empire from her suffering.

Could he really have caused the injury too?

Victor continued.

“Richard did not plan everything alone.”

Clara looked up.

“Who helped him?”

Victor hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Your grandfather’s organization.”

Ethan frowned.

“Organization?”

Victor nodded.

“Project Second Chance was not just a charity.”

He opened another document.

“It was a private network.”

Names appeared.

Doctors.

Executives.

Investors.

Government officials.

Powerful people who had benefited from keeping the truth hidden.

Clara stared at the list.

“This is impossible.”

“No,” Victor said.

“It is exactly what they wanted everyone to believe.”

He looked at her.

“They wanted people to think they were helping the world while secretly controlling the lives of those who depended on them.”

Clara felt anger rising inside her.

For years, she had blamed her own body.

She had blamed herself.

She had wondered why she wasn’t strong enough.

Why she couldn’t recover.

Why she couldn’t be normal.

But the truth was much worse.

Someone had taken her future away.

On purpose.

Ethan stepped beside her.

“Clara, there’s something else.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

He pointed to the final page of the document.

At the bottom was a signature.

A signature Clara recognized.

Her mother’s.

Her eyes widened.

“My mother signed this?”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

Clara’s confusion grew.

“But she was trying to expose them.”

“She was.”

“Then why would she sign anything?”

Victor looked at her.

“Because she was trying to destroy Project Second Chance from the inside.”

The room went quiet again.

“Your mother joined them temporarily.”

Clara stared.

“She pretended to support Richard and your grandfather.”

“Why?”

“To collect evidence.”

Ethan added quietly:

“Your mother was closer to the truth than anyone realized.”

Clara looked at the photograph of her mother.

For the first time, she saw something different.

Not a victim.

A fighter.

A woman who had risked everything.

“She knew,” Clara whispered.

Victor nodded.

“She knew Richard would eventually come after her.”

“Then why didn’t she run?”

Victor’s expression became painful.

“Because she refused to leave you behind.”

Clara closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

Her mother had not abandoned her.

She had fought for her.

Until the very end.

Then suddenly, one of the police officers received a message.

His expression changed.

He walked quickly toward the others.

“Detective.”

Everyone turned.

“What happened?”

The officer looked at Clara.

“We just received confirmation.”

“Confirmation of what?”

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Richard Sterling was never taken into custody.”

The room froze.

“What?”

“He escaped during transport.”

A wave of panic spread.

Clara felt cold.

Richard was free.

And now he knew the truth was exposed.

The officer continued.

“There’s more.”

Clara looked at him.

“What?”

The officer held up a photograph.

A security image.

Richard standing outside a private facility.

A facility Clara had never seen before.

Victor’s face turned pale.

“No…”

Ethan looked at him.

“What is it?”

Victor whispered:

“That building…”

He looked at Clara.

“That is where Project Second Chance began.”

Clara stared at the image.

Then she noticed something.

A person standing beside Richard.

Someone else who had survived the investigation.

Someone who should have been impossible to find.

Her grandfather.

William Sterling.

Alive.

And standing beside Richard.

Clara’s entire world shifted again.

May you like

Because the man everyone believed was dead…

Was the person who had been controlling everything from the shadows.
