CHAPTER 3: THE TRUTH ABOUT CLARA’S BIRTH

CHAPTER 3: THE TRUTH ABOUT CLARA’S BIRTH

Clara stared at the photograph in her hands.

She had seen hundreds of pictures of her childhood.

Pictures of herself with Richard.

Pictures of birthday parties inside the Sterling mansion.
Pictures carefully selected by her father to show the world a perfect family.

But she had never seen this one.

Never.

The image was old and slightly faded.

Her mother, Elizabeth Sterling, stood in the center, smiling warmly.

Beside her was Dr. Daniel Parker.

And in Elizabeth’s arms was a tiny newborn baby.

Clara.

Her fingers tightened around the photograph.

“No…”

The word escaped her lips like a whisper.

Ethan looked at her with sadness.

“I know this is a lot to process.”

Clara slowly looked up.

“Why is my mother with your father?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already knew the truth was about to destroy the last piece of the story Richard Sterling had created.

Richard stood several feet away, surrounded by police officers.

But despite everything happening around him, he was watching Clara carefully.

Almost like he was waiting for something.

Ethan noticed.

“Don’t let him control this moment.”

Clara looked back at Richard.

For years, that man had been her entire world.

Her protector.

Her father.

The person she believed would never hurt her.

Now, every memory felt different.

Every word had another meaning.

Every smile seemed fake.

“Tell me the truth,” Clara said.

Richard remained silent.

“Tell me what happened the night I was born.”

The ballroom waited.

The cameras waited.

The entire city seemed to be waiting.

Finally, Richard spoke.

“You really want the truth?”

Clara nodded.

“Yes.”

Richard let out a quiet breath.

“Fine.”

He looked around the room.

“Your mother was not the woman everyone thought she was.”

Clara’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.”

Her voice stopped him.

“Do not stand there and try to destroy her like you destroyed me.”

The crowd reacted.

Richard’s face tightened.

For the first time, Clara was not the frightened daughter sitting silently beside him.

She was someone who could no longer be controlled.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Elizabeth Sterling discovered Richard’s financial crimes before Clara was born.”

Clara looked at him.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

Ethan opened another file.

“She found evidence that Richard was using fake charities and hidden accounts to move money illegally.”

Several reporters immediately began writing.

Richard shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.”

But nobody believed him anymore.

Ethan continued.

“Your mother wanted to report him. She contacted my father because she trusted him.”

Clara looked at the photograph again.

“So my mother and Dr. Parker worked together?”

“Yes.”

“They were trying to expose him?”

“Yes.”

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then why didn’t they?”

The room became quiet.

Ethan looked down.

“Because Richard found out.”

A cold feeling moved through Clara’s chest.

“What happened?”

Ethan hesitated.

“My father’s records show that your mother was planning to meet him the night she disappeared.”

Clara froze.

Disappeared.

Not died.

Disappeared.

That word changed everything.

“My father told me he received a message from Elizabeth that night.”

Ethan’s voice became softer.

“She said she had proof that Richard would do anything to protect his empire.”

Clara looked at Richard.

“Then what?”

Richard’s face became unreadable.

Ethan continued.

“My father went to meet her.”

A pause.

“But Elizabeth never arrived.”

The ballroom was silent.

“Two days later, Richard announced that your mother had died in a car accident.”

Clara felt dizzy.

“No…”

She shook her head.

“My whole life…”

She could barely speak.

“My whole life I thought she left me.”

Ethan looked at her.

“She never left you.”

Those words broke something inside Clara.

Tears rolled down her face.

Because the one thing she had secretly blamed herself for since childhood suddenly wasn’t true.

Her mother hadn’t abandoned her.

She had been taken away.

Richard watched her carefully.

Then he spoke.

“Ethan is telling you half the story.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Clara wiped her tears.

“What does that mean?”

Richard gave a small, cold smile.

“It means he knows more than he’s admitting.”

Ethan immediately looked uncomfortable.

Clara noticed.

“You’re hiding something too.”

Ethan looked away.

“Clara…”

“No.”

Her voice became stronger.

“I deserve the entire truth.”

For a moment, Ethan said nothing.

Then he slowly reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I was hoping I would never have to show you this.”

Clara took it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Her mother’s handwriting.

Her hands began shaking.

The letter was dated three days before Elizabeth’s disappearance.

Clara read the first line.

“My dear Clara, if you are reading this, it means Richard failed to keep the truth hidden.”

Her heart stopped.

She continued reading.

“There is something you need to know about your father…”

Clara looked up.

Richard’s face had changed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

Because whatever was written in that letter…

Was something he had spent sixteen years trying to bury.

Clara continued.

And then she read the sentence that changed everything.

“Richard Sterling is not your biological father.”

The ballroom exploded with whispers.

Cameras flashed.

Someone gasped loudly.

Clara stood completely still.

The man who had raised her.

The man who had controlled her life.

The man who had told her she was his greatest love…

Was not her father.

She slowly looked at Richard.

“Is this true?”

Richard said nothing.

And his silence was the answer.

Clara stepped back.

Her entire world had changed in one night.

But the worst part was still coming.

Because the next line in her mother’s letter revealed a secret even Richard never expected anyone to discover.

“Your real father is alive.”

Clara looked at Ethan.

Then at Richard.

And for the first time…

May you like

She realized this story was not about losing her past.

It was about finally finding the truth.
