CHAPTER 6: THE LAST MESSAGE FROM ELIZABETH STERLING

CHAPTER 6: THE LAST MESSAGE FROM ELIZABETH STERLING

The old recording device sat in Ethan’s hand.

Small.

Dusty.

Almost forgotten.

But Clara stared at it as if it were the most important object in the entire world.

Because inside that tiny device was something she had spent sixteen years believing she would never have.

Her mother’s voice.

The ballroom had emptied slightly.

Some guests had left after the shocking revelations.
Others remained, unable to look away from the downfall of one of the city’s most powerful men.

Reporters surrounded the entrance.

Police continued collecting evidence.

But Clara barely noticed any of it.

Her entire focus was on the device.

“My mother recorded this?”

Ethan nodded.

“My father kept it hidden because he knew Richard would destroy it if he found out.”

Clara swallowed.

“Why didn’t he give it to me sooner?”

Ethan looked down.

“Because my father believed the truth could be dangerous if you weren’t ready.”

Clara looked at him.

“Ready?”

Her voice cracked.

“I spent three years trapped in a wheelchair because someone decided I couldn’t handle the truth.”

Ethan immediately understood.

He lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.”

A moment passed.

Then Alexander gently placed a hand on Clara’s shoulder.

“Whatever is on that recording, you don’t have to face it alone.”

Clara looked at him.

It was strange.

A few hours ago, this man had been a stranger.

Now he was the person who shared her blood.

The person who had been searching for her.

The person Richard had tried to erase from her life.

Clara nodded.

“Play it.”

Ethan pressed the button.

At first, there was only static.

Then…

A woman’s voice filled the ballroom.

A voice Clara had not heard since she was a small child.

Soft.

Warm.

Familiar.

“Clara…”

Her knees almost gave out.

She grabbed the wheelchair beside her for support.

Her mother.

It was really her mother.

“If you are hearing this, it means Richard failed to keep the truth hidden.”

A tear rolled down Clara’s face.

Elizabeth continued.

“My precious daughter, I need you to know something before anything else.”

A pause.

“I never abandoned you.”

Clara covered her mouth.

The words she had secretly wished to hear her entire life were finally coming from the person she had missed the most.

“I fought to stay with you.”

Elizabeth’s voice became emotional.

“I fought because you were the only reason I had to keep going.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Memories flashed through her mind.

A mother’s hand holding hers.

A gentle voice singing before bedtime.

A promise that she would always be loved.

Then the recording changed.

Elizabeth’s voice became more serious.

“But Richard discovered what I knew.”

The room became silent.

“He discovered that I had evidence of his crimes.”

Clara looked at Alexander.

He remained still.

“He threatened to take you away from me.”

Elizabeth continued.

“He told me nobody would believe me. He told me that he had money, influence, and power.”

A pause.

“And then he told me something I will never forget.”

Everyone waited.

“He said if I exposed him, he would make sure Clara grew up believing she was worthless.”

Clara’s heart broke.

Because those words described exactly what happened.

Richard did not only control her body.

He controlled her confidence.

Her dreams.

Her belief in herself.

Elizabeth continued.

“He wanted Clara to depend on him forever.”

Clara looked down at her hands.

That was exactly what Richard had done.

But then her mother said something unexpected.

“But Richard made one mistake.”

The recording became quiet.

“He underestimated my daughter.”

Clara froze.

“He thought Clara was weak because she was kind.”

“He thought kindness meant helplessness.”

“He was wrong.”

Tears filled Clara’s eyes.

“Clara, if you are listening to this, remember one thing.”

The voice became softer.

“You were never broken.”

The entire ballroom seemed to disappear.

“You were never less than anyone else.”

“You were always stronger than the people who tried to control you.”

Clara cried silently.

Because those were the words she needed to hear.

Not from doctors.

Not from strangers.

From her mother.

Then Elizabeth revealed something that shocked everyone.

“Richard will try to convince you that he saved you.”

A pause.

“But the truth is, he needed you to remain hurt because your pain built his empire.”

The reporters immediately reacted.

The evidence was already overwhelming.

But Elizabeth was not finished.

“There is another person involved.”

Clara looked confused.

Another person?

“Richard did not act alone.”

Everyone looked at Ethan.

Elizabeth continued.

“There was someone inside the Sterling organization who helped him.”

Clara’s expression changed.

“Someone close.”

The recording stopped for a moment.

Then Elizabeth whispered:

“Someone you trust.”

A cold silence filled the ballroom.

Clara looked around.

Who?

Who else had been part of this?

Richard’s lawyers?

The doctors?

The executives?

Then Elizabeth said the final words.

“The person who helped Richard destroy my family is the person standing closest to Clara.”

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The message had created more questions than answers.

Clara slowly turned around.

Everyone in the ballroom was looking at her.

Everyone except one person.

A person standing near the entrance.

A person who had been silent all night.

Someone Clara had known for years.

Someone who had always claimed to protect her.

Her father’s most trusted advisor.

Victor Hale.

The former business partner.

The man from the photograph.

He looked at Clara.

And for a brief second…

She saw guilt in his eyes.

Ethan noticed too.

“Clara…”

She whispered:

“He was there.”

Alexander looked at her.

“Who?”

Clara pointed.

“Victor Hale.”

The room changed instantly.

Victor slowly stepped forward.

“I think it’s time we stop pretending.”

The police officers moved closer.

Ethan clenched his fists.

“You knew.”

Victor looked at him.

“Yes.”

The answer shocked everyone.

“I knew everything.”

Clara felt her heart sink.

“Why?”

Victor looked at her.

And his next words changed the entire investigation.

“Because Richard Sterling was never the mastermind.”

A silence fell.

“He was only following orders.”

Clara’s face turned pale.

“Whose orders?”

Victor looked toward the ballroom doors.

Then he said the name nobody expected.

“The person who created Project Second Chance.”

A pause.

“The person who planned everything from the beginning…”

May you like

Victor looked directly at Clara.

“…was your grandfather.”
