CHAPTER 17: THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS

CHAPTER 17: THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS

The mansion was swallowed by darkness.

The only sounds were shattering glass, distant shouts from police officers, and the shrill alarm echoing through every hallway.

Clara instinctively dropped to the floor beside Ethan.

Another gunshot cracked through the air.

A marble statue exploded into fragments only a few feet away.

"Stay down!" Ethan shouted.

Police officers rushed toward the broken windows, taking cover behind the heavy stone columns.

Outside, the black SUVs that had brought William Sterling's security team were now trapped between flashing police vehicles.

The estate had become a battlefield.

Alexander pulled Clara behind an overturned oak table.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head.

"I'm okay."

William Sterling remained standing.

His eyes were fixed on the darkness beyond the shattered windows.

"He finally came."

Clara looked up.

"Who is he?"

William's expression was filled with something Clara had never imagined seeing.

Fear.

Real fear.

"The one person none of us ever escaped."

Dr. Marcus Vale slowly backed away.

His confidence had vanished.

"No..."

He whispered.

"He wasn't supposed to know we were all here."

Victoria noticed his reaction immediately.

"You know who's outside."

Marcus looked at her.

Then he nodded.

"Yes."

Ethan grabbed him by the collar.

"Tell us."

Marcus hesitated.

The sound of footsteps echoed from the entrance hall.

Slow.

Steady.

Unhurried.

Whoever was entering wasn't afraid of the police.

Or anyone else.

Marcus finally spoke.

"His name is Jonathan Cross."

The name meant nothing to Clara.

But William closed his eyes.

Alexander's face turned pale.

Even Victoria staggered backward.

Clara noticed.

"You all know him."

William answered quietly.

"He financed the original project."

Clara frowned.

"I thought you paid for it."

"I started it."

William swallowed.

"Jonathan turned it into an empire."

Another explosion shook the mansion.

The front doors burst open completely.

Smoke drifted through the grand hallway.

Several armed men entered first, moving with military precision.

Then a single man walked calmly between them.

He looked to be in his early sixties.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

His charcoal suit was immaculate despite the chaos around him.

He carried no weapon.

He didn't need one.

Every armed man in the room answered to him.

Jonathan Cross smiled politely.

"I've been looking for all of you."

Nobody answered.

Police officers raised their weapons.

"Don't move!"

Jonathan ignored them.

Instead, he looked directly at Clara.

"So..."

"You must be Elizabeth's daughter."

Clara stood slowly.

Despite Alexander's protests.

"You know my mother."

Jonathan smiled.

"I admired your mother."

William snapped.

"You destroyed her life."

Jonathan looked almost amused.

"No, William."

"You destroyed it."

The words hit like a hammer.

Jonathan walked farther into the room.

His bodyguards never took their eyes off Clara.

"You blamed Richard."

He glanced at Marcus.

"You blamed the doctor."

He looked at William.

"You even blamed yourself."

He smiled again.

"But none of you ever asked the obvious question."

Clara crossed her arms.

"What question?"

Jonathan stopped only a few feet away.

"Who benefited most from all of your mistakes?"

Silence.

Jonathan answered his own question.

"I did."

Marcus stared at him.

"You promised no one would ever know."

Jonathan shrugged.

"I lied."

William's hands trembled.

"You manipulated all of us."

"I guided you."

Jonathan corrected him calmly.

"You supplied the money."

William.

"You supplied the science."

Marcus.

"You supplied the public image."

Richard.

"And when Elizabeth became a problem..."

He looked toward Victoria.

"...someone helped her disappear."

Victoria glared at him.

"I saved her."

Jonathan nodded.

"You delayed the inevitable."

Clara stepped forward.

"Where is my mother?"

Jonathan looked at her with genuine curiosity.

"That's still your first question?"

"It always will be."

He smiled.

"Good."

"You sound exactly like Elizabeth."

Clara refused to look away.

"Answer me."

Jonathan remained silent for several seconds.

Then he reached into his jacket.

Police officers immediately aimed their weapons.

Instead of a gun...

He removed a small silver locket.

Clara gasped.

She recognized it instantly.

It was the necklace her mother wore in every childhood photograph.

Jonathan placed it gently on the table.

"Elizabeth asked me to keep this."

The room froze.

Clara whispered,

"You've seen her."

"Yes."

"When?"

Jonathan looked directly into her eyes.

"Three weeks ago."

Every person in the room stopped breathing.

Victoria's knees nearly gave out.

"That's impossible."

Jonathan shrugged.

"Nothing about this family has ever been impossible."

Clara's voice shook.

"My mother..."

"Is alive."

Tears filled Clara's eyes.

"Where is she?"

Jonathan's expression became serious.

"I'll tell you."

Hope flooded Clara's heart.

Then Jonathan added,

"But first..."

"You have to hear the truth she never had the courage to tell you."

William stepped forward.

"Don't."

Jonathan ignored him.

He looked only at Clara.

"Your mother didn't stay away because she was hiding from Richard."

Clara felt her heartbeat quicken.

"She stayed away..."

"...because someone betrayed her after she escaped."

Alexander's face lost all color.

Victoria whispered,

"No..."

Jonathan continued.

"And that betrayal came from someone standing in this room."

Every eye turned from one face to another.

Jonathan slowly raised his hand.

His finger pointed toward a single person.

Not William.

Not Marcus.

Not Victoria.

Not Alexander.

Jonathan looked directly at Ethan.

"The son of Daniel Parker."

Ethan stared in disbelief.

"What?"

Jonathan smiled faintly.

"Not you."

He paused.

"Your father."

The room fell silent.

Jonathan's next words changed everything.

"Daniel Parker didn't disappear because he was murdered."

"He disappeared because Elizabeth asked him to take her somewhere no one else could ever find."

Clara's heart pounded.

Jonathan took one final step forward.

"And before Daniel died..."

"He left behind one last message."

Jonathan reached into his briefcase and removed an old cassette tape labeled in faded handwriting:

FOR CLARA — PLAY ONLY WHEN SHE IS READY.

Clara stared at the tape.

It was her mother's handwriting.

Jonathan gently slid it across the table.

"The truth you've been searching for..."

"...has been waiting for sixteen years."
