CHAPTER 10: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 10: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW THE TRUTH
The headline remained on the screen.
“Missing Sterling Family Insider Found Alive After 16 Years.”
Nobody in the ballroom spoke.
Everyone was staring at the same photograph.
Victoria Blackwell.
The woman who had disappeared after Elizabeth Sterling vanished.
The woman who had been Richard Sterling’s trusted associate.

The woman who might know the truth about the night Clara lost her mother.
Clara felt a strange mixture of emotions.
Hope.
Fear.
Anger.
After everything she had discovered, she no longer knew whether finding the truth would bring peace or create another wound.
“She wants to meet me?”
Her voice was quiet.
The police officer nodded.
“Yes. She specifically requested Clara Sterling.”
Ethan looked concerned.
“That could be a trap.”
Clara turned toward him.
“Everything tonight could have been a trap.”
She looked at the medical records.
The documents.
The evidence.
The lies.
“But I can’t keep hiding from the truth.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“You don’t have to face this alone.”
Clara looked at him.
For years, she had dreamed about having someone protect her.
But now she understood something important.
Protection without honesty was another form of control.
“I appreciate that,” she said softly.
“But this time, I need to know for myself.”
Ethan nodded.
He understood.
Because Clara was no longer the girl sitting quietly beside Richard.
She was someone who had found her voice.
Two hours later, Clara arrived at an old private estate outside the city.
The location surprised her.
It wasn’t a secret underground facility.
It wasn’t a heavily guarded mansion.
It was a small, quiet house surrounded by trees.
Almost ordinary.
Almost peaceful.
The opposite of everything connected to the Sterling family.
Police officers remained nearby.
Ethan and Alexander followed behind her.
As Clara approached the front door, she noticed something.
A small garden beside the entrance.
Flowers.
White roses.
The same flowers her mother used to grow.
Her heart tightened.
Before she could knock, the door opened.
An elderly woman stood there.
Her hair was silver.
Her face showed years of pain.
But her eyes…
Her eyes were the same ones from the old photographs.
Victoria Blackwell.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Victoria looked at Clara.
And tears immediately filled her eyes.
“Oh my God…”
Her voice trembled.
“You look exactly like Elizabeth.”
Clara froze.
Nobody had said that to her before.
Not like this.
Not with such emotion.
“You knew my mother.”
Victoria nodded.
“I loved your mother.”
The words were simple.
But they carried sixteen years of regret.
Clara stepped inside.
The house was quiet.
There were photographs everywhere.
Photos of Elizabeth.
Photos of Clara as a baby.
Photos from a life she never knew existed.
Clara stopped in front of one picture.
It showed her mother holding her as a newborn.
Next to her was Victoria.
They looked happy.
Like sisters.
“Why did you disappear?”
Clara asked.
Victoria lowered her eyes.
“Because Richard Sterling wanted me dead.”
The room went silent.
Ethan immediately became alert.
“What?”
Victoria looked at him.
“You must be Daniel Parker’s son.”
Ethan nodded.
Victoria sighed.
“Your father was one of the bravest men I ever knew.”
Clara looked at her.
“What happened?”
Victoria walked toward a table and placed an old journal on it.
“Your mother kept this.”
Clara stared.
“My mother’s journal?”
Victoria nodded.
“She gave it to me the night she disappeared.”
Clara carefully opened it.
The pages were filled with Elizabeth’s handwriting.
Notes.
Names.
Evidence.
And one sentence written repeatedly:
“Trust no one in the Sterling family.”
Clara looked up.
“She knew.”
“Yes.”
“She knew Richard was dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t she leave?”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she believed she could stop him.”
Clara looked back at the journal.
“What happened that night?”
Victoria sat down.
“I need you to hear everything.”
Everyone became silent.
Victoria took a deep breath.
“Your mother discovered that Project Second Chance was not just about money.”
Clara listened carefully.
“It was about control.”
Victoria continued.
“Your grandfather believed powerful families should control society by controlling resources. Medical care. Charities. Research. Information.”
Clara felt sick.
“He wanted power.”
“Yes.”
“And Richard continued it.”
“Yes.”
Victoria looked at her.
“But your mother found something worse.”
“What?”
Victoria opened another page in the journal.
Inside was a list.
Names.
Dates.
Events.
At the bottom was one name circled in red.
Richard Sterling.
“Richard wasn’t just managing the project.”
Victoria whispered.
“He was testing it.”
Clara frowned.
“Testing what?”
Victoria looked directly at her.
“The ability to control someone’s entire life.”
A cold silence followed.
“He wanted proof that a person could be shaped by controlling their environment, their information, their medical care, and their emotions.”
Clara’s hands became cold.
“He used me.”
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.”
Her voice broke.
“He chose you because you were his daughter.”
Clara looked away.
The pain was still there.
Even after everything, hearing it again hurt.
Victoria reached across the table.
“Your mother tried to stop him.”
“How?”
“She collected evidence.”
“Like the recordings?”
“Yes.”
“She planned to expose him.”
“Yes.”
“Then what happened?”
Victoria became quiet.
For the first time, fear appeared on her face.
“Richard found out.”
The room became still.
“He confronted your mother.”
Clara held her breath.
“What happened?”
Victoria looked at her.
“Your mother survived that night.”
Everyone froze.
Clara whispered:
“What?”
Victoria nodded.
“She did not die in the accident.”
The room felt like it stopped moving.
“Then where is she?”
Victoria’s eyes filled with sadness.
“That is the part I still don’t understand.”
She looked at the journal.
“Because after Richard attacked her plan, someone else took Elizabeth away.”
Clara stared.
“Someone else?”
Victoria nodded.
“Someone Richard was afraid of.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“Who?”
Victoria slowly opened the final page of Elizabeth’s journal.
A name was written there.
A name that made Alexander’s face turn pale.
A name that nobody expected.
Clara read it.
And her heart stopped.
Because the person Elizabeth feared most…
Was not Richard.
Not William.
Not even Project Second Chance.
It was someone who had been helping them from the beginning.
Someone Clara had trusted.
Someone who had been beside her family for years.
The name written on the page was:
Alexander Reed.
Clara slowly looked at the man she had just begun to call her father.
Alexander’s face lost all color.
“No…”
His voice was barely audible.
“That’s impossible.”
Victoria looked at him.
“Elizabeth wrote the truth.”
Clara stepped back.
The man who claimed to have searched for her.
The man who said he loved her mother.
The man who said he wanted to protect her.
Was now connected to the darkest secret of all.
Ethan looked between them.
“My father…”
Victoria whispered:
“Your father knew more than he ever admitted.”
Clara’s heart shattered again.
Because after everything she had survived…
May you like
The person who might hold the final answer…
Might also be the person who helped destroy her family.
