Chapter 9: The Viper in the Garden

The peace was fragile, and it shattered on a Tuesday afternoon.

Elena was in the sprawling kitchen, humming softly as she sliced strawberries for Mia’s afternoon snack. The estate felt secure, the heavy presence of the guards outside providing a comforting blanket of safety.

A knock sounded at the kitchen door. One of the newer staff members, a young man named Carlo who had been hired through the usual rigorous vetting process, stepped inside carrying a large box of imported chocolates.

"Delivery for Miss Mia, ma'am," Carlo said, his eyes glued to the floor. "From Mr. Verrone. He said he wanted her to have a treat."

Elena smiled, wiping her hands on a towel. "Thank you, Carlo. You can leave it on the counter."

Carlo placed the box down, but he lingered for a second too long. His hand hovered near his pocket. Elena’s instincts, honed by years of surviving on the streets of New York before she found stable work, flared to life. Something was wrong. Damiano never sent gifts through the staff; he always gave them to Mia personally.

"Carlo," Elena said, her voice dropping an octave, keeping her eyes fixed on the knife block. "Who vetted you?"

Carlo’s head snapped up. His eyes were cold, frantic. He pulled a suppressed pistol from his jacket. "Nothing personal, lady. The Rossi family sends their regards."

He raised the gun, but Elena was faster. With a fierce scream, she grabbed the heavy marble rolling pin from the counter and hurled it with all her might. It struck Carlo squarely in the face with a sickening crunch. He stumbled backward, the gun discharging wildly, the bullet shattering a glass cabinet.

Elena didn't hesitate. She lunged forward, grabbing the kitchen knife she had been using for the strawberries, and drove the handle hard into Carlo’s throat. He collapsed to the floor, gasping for air, the weapon skittering across the tiles.

Within seconds, the kitchen doors burst open. Rafael and three guards stormed in, assault rifles raised.

They froze at the sight. Elena stood over the gasping assassin, clutching the kitchen knife, her chest heaving, a fierce, feral look in her eyes.

"Secure him," Rafael barked to the guards, rushing over to Elena. "Are you hurt?"

"I'm fine," she breathed, her hands shaking as the adrenaline began to fade. "Where is Mia?"

"In the playroom with the guards. She’s safe."

Suddenly, the air in the room grew completely still. Damiano walked through the doors. He took in the shattered glass, the assassin bleeding on the floor, and Elena clutching a knife.

The look on Damiano’s face was not anger. It was something far worse. It was pure, unadulterated madness.

He walked slowly over to Carlo, grabbing the man by the hair and lifting his bloody face. "The Rossis," Damiano whispered, a demonic smile stretching across his face. "They sent a rat into my house. To kill my family."

Damiano dropped the man's head and turned to Rafael. "Take him to the basement. Keep him alive until I come down. And call the capos of the remaining four families. Tell them there is a mandatory gala this Friday at the Continental Hotel."

"Boss, a gala? Now?" Rafael asked, bewildered.

"Yes," Damiano said, turning his gaze to Elena, his dark eyes filled with absolute, terrifying devotion. "They think Elena and Mia are my weaknesses because I hide them. It is time I show the world exactly who they are dealing with."
