Chapter 5: The Lion's Den

The following morning, the atmosphere in the Verrone mansion was electric. News of the incident at the school had spread through the underworld like wildfire. Damiano’s men were on high alert, heavily armed guards patrolling the perimeter with dogs.
Inside the west wing, however, there was an eerie domesticity.
Damiano sat at the massive marble kitchen island, reading a financial report on his tablet. He was dressed in a crisp black shirt and slacks, a holster visibly strapped over his chest, holding two matching pistols.
Suddenly, small footsteps padded into the kitchen. Mia, wearing her pajamas and clutching a stuffed bunny, rubbed her sleepy eyes.
"Daddy?" she mumbled.
Damiano froze. The word struck him harder than a physical blow. He slowly lowered his tablet. "Yes, piccola?"
"I'm hungry. Can we have pancakes?"
Before Damiano could answer, Elena rushed into the kitchen, looking flushed and flustered, her hair messy from sleep. "Mia! I told you not to bother Mr. Verrone when he is working!"
Damiano held up a hand, silencing Elena. He stood up, unbuckled his shoulder holster, and placed the lethal weapons on the highest shelf of the pantry, entirely out of sight.
"Pancakes," Damiano said, turning back to Mia with a completely straight face. "I am unfamiliar with this operation. Explain the logistics."
Mia giggled, the sound light and musical. "You just mix the powder and water and put it in a pan! It’s easy!"
Ten minutes later, Rafael walked into the kitchen with an urgent security briefing, only to stop dead in his tracks. His jaw practically hit the floor.
Damiano Verrone, the most feared man on the East Coast, had an apron tied over his designer shirt. He was holding a spatula in one hand and awkwardly attempting to flip a severely burnt circle of batter in a frying pan, while a five-year-old girl cheered him on from the counter. Elena was leaning against the sink, trying and failing to hide a smile behind her hand.
"Boss?" Rafael managed to choke out.
Damiano didn't look away from the frying pan. "Not now, Rafael. This requires my full concentration. If the edges burn, the entire enterprise is ruined."
"Boss, it’s Silvio Marchetti," Rafael said, his tone turning serious, pulling Damiano instantly back into his dark reality. "He requested a sit-down. Tonight. At his warehouse in Brooklyn. He says he wants to clear the air about the 'misunderstanding' at the school."
Damiano stopped. The warmth in the room vanished in an instant, replaced by a chilling, absolute cold. He carefully placed the spatula down on the counter and wiped his hands on a towel. He turned to Elena, his eyes communicating a silent, heavy message.
"Take Mia to the playroom," he instructed softly.
Once they were gone, Damiano walked over to Rafael. "He wants a sit-down in his own territory. He thinks he has me backed into a corner. He thinks I’ll come begging for peace to protect the girl."
"It's a trap, Damiano. Everyone knows it. If you go to that warehouse, you might not walk out."
A dark, terrifying smirk played on Damiano’s lips. It was the smile of a devil who had just been invited to a fire.
"Oh, I’m not walking in there to talk, Rafael," Damiano said, reaching up to retrieve his holsters from the high shelf. He strapped them back over his chest, the heavy metal settling perfectly against his ribs.

"Assemble the execution squad. Call in the snipers. If Silvio Marchetti wants a war over my daughter, I will make sure history remembers tonight as the night the Marchetti family ceased to exist."
Damiano loaded a fresh magazine into his gun, the metallic clack echoing loudly in the quiet kitchen. "The lion doesn't negotiate with the sheep. Tonight, we slaughter them."
