Chapter 4: The Maid’s Secret

The west wing of the Verrone estate was a place of legends. It was a fortress within a fortress, guarded by biometric locks, reinforced steel doors, and the most lethal men on Damiano's payroll. It was here that Elena found herself pacing, the plush Persian rug doing little to muffle her frantic footsteps.

When the heavy oak door finally opened, Damiano stepped in. He had shed his jacket and tie, smelling of rain, expensive cologne, and a faint, metallic hint of gunpowder.

"Mia is asleep?" he asked, walking to the crystal decanter on the mahogany sideboard and pouring himself two fingers of scotch.

"She is," Elena said, crossing her arms defensively over her chest. "Mr. Verrone, I demand to know what is going on. You cannot just uproot us, lock us in a wing of your mansion, and tell me the contract has changed to a lifetime! I am a maid, not a prisoner."

Damiano took a slow sip of his drink, his dark eyes studying her over the rim of the glass. Elena was beautiful in a raw, untamed way. Even in her plain clothes, without a drop of makeup, there was a fire in her eyes that refused to be extinguished. It was a fire he hadn't noticed when she was blending into the wallpaper, cleaning his floors.

"You are no longer a maid," Damiano stated calmly. "As of today, you are under my personal protection. Silvio Marchetti tried to make a move today at the school."

Elena’s face drained of color. Her knees buckled slightly, and she collapsed onto the edge of the velvet sofa. "At the school? Mia... oh, god."

"She is unharmed. She didn't even notice," Damiano reassured her, his voice softening just a fraction. He walked over and handed her his glass of scotch. "Drink. You look like a ghost."

Elena took the glass with trembling hands, downing the fiery liquid. It burned her throat, but it grounded her. She looked up at the towering mafia boss. "Why are you doing this? We are nothing to you. You could have just paid us off and sent us to another state. Why bring us here, into your inner sanctum?"

Damiano went silent. He walked over to the large bay window overlooking the estate grounds, bathed in the moonlight. "Three years ago," he began, his voice barely above a whisper, "my wife, Caterina, was pregnant. We were leaving a restaurant in Little Italy. It was supposed to be a peace treaty with the Rossi family. It was an ambush."

Elena stopped breathing. She knew the rumors, of course. Everyone in the city knew the story of the bloody night that turned Damiano Verrone into the ruthless, emotionless machine he was today. But hearing it from his lips was entirely different.

"I took three bullets. Caterina took four," Damiano continued, his hands gripping the windowsill so tightly his knuckles turned white. "I woke up a week later in a private hospital. I had my empire, but I had no family. I swore I would never let anyone close enough to use them against me again."

He turned back to look at Elena. "Then your daughter walked up to me with a piece of paper and a crayon heart. She didn't see a monster. She just saw a man." Damiano stepped closer, his imposing presence filling her senses. "Marchetti thinks Mia is my weakness. I am going to show him she is my reason to burn this city to the ground. You are staying here, Elena. Because if I let you go out there, they will use you to break me."

Elena stared into his dark, haunted eyes. She saw the killer, yes, but she also saw a profoundly broken man desperately trying to protect the only fragile, pure thing that had touched his life in years.

"Okay," she whispered, her voice trembling but resolute. "We stay. But on one condition."

Damiano arched an eyebrow. "You are not in a position to negotiate, cara (dear)."

"I am a mother defending her child, Mr. Verrone. I am in the ultimate position," she shot back, stepping up to him. "If we stay, you do not lie to her. You do not bring your bloody business into this wing. To her, you are a father, not a mafia boss. Can you promise me that?"

Damiano looked down at the fierce, brave woman defying him in his own home. A strange, unfamiliar warmth twisted in his chest.

"I swear it," he murmured.
