Chapter 20: The Legacy of the Verrones

Five years later.
The sprawling Verrone estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of a summer afternoon. The heavy, suffocating tension that used to blanket the grounds was long gone, replaced by the sounds of children laughing and the splashing of water from the massive swimming pool.
Peace had reigned over the East Coast since the night the Three Dons fell. Damiano Verrone ruled as the undisputed Capo dei Capi, but his rule was one of order and strict codes. No innocents were touched. No children were threatened. He was feared by his enemies, but deeply respected by his people.
On the patio, Damiano sat in a lounge chair, wearing sunglasses and a casual linen shirt, a stark contrast to the rigid, cold man he used to be. In his lap sat a four-year-old boy with messy dark hair and striking brown eyes—Lorenzo Verrone.
"And then the dragon ate the bad guy?" Lorenzo asked, looking up at his father with wide eyes.
"Exactly," Damiano chuckled, his deep rumble vibrating in his chest. "The dragon ate the bad guy because the bad guy tried to steal the dragon's treasure."
"Daddy!"
Damiano looked up to see an eleven-year-old Mia sprinting across the lawn, holding a pristine report card. She was growing into a beautiful young girl, confident, fiercely intelligent, and fiercely protected by everyone in the family, especially her Uncle Rafael, who had fully recovered and was currently manning the barbecue grill nearby.
"Look!" Mia beamed, shoving the paper into Damiano’s face. "All A's! Uncle Rafael owes me fifty bucks!"
Rafael groaned from the grill, flipping a burger. "I said forty, kid! Don't extort your elders, it's against mafia code!"
Damiano laughed aloud—a sound that still brought a smile to the faces of his hardened guards. He pulled Mia in for a side hug, kissing her temple. "I am proud of you, piccola. You will rule the world one day."
"She already does," Elena said, stepping out onto the patio.
Damiano’s breath caught, just as it did every single time he looked at her. She was radiant, her dark hair blowing gently in the breeze. She walked over, placing a hand on his shoulder. He reached up, pulling her down for a slow, lingering kiss that made Mia gross out and cover Lorenzo's eyes.
"We built a good life, Mr. Verrone," Elena murmured against his lips.
Damiano looked around the sunlit garden. He saw his beautiful, brilliant daughter. He felt the weight of his strong, healthy son in his lap. He looked at the woman who had walked into the lion's den with a trembling hand and managed to tame the beast entirely.

The little girl with the crayon heart had asked to borrow him for just one day. In return, they had given him an eternity.
"We did, Mrs. Verrone," Damiano whispered, pulling his family close. "We built an empire."
