Chapter 11: The Golden Cage

The aftermath of the Continental Hotel gala changed everything. Elena was no longer the invisible maid blending into the walls of the Verrone estate; she was the undisputed Queen of the New York underworld.
But wearing a crown of shadows came with a suffocating weight.
For the first few weeks, Elena tried to maintain a sense of normalcy. She insisted on cooking breakfast, much to the horror of the estate’s Michelin-starred private chef, and she tried to do her own laundry. Damiano, however, was having none of it. He had essentially locked down the estate, doubling the perimeter guards and replacing all standard vehicles with military-grade armored SUVs.
One brisk Tuesday morning, Elena found Damiano in his study, poring over shipping ledgers. She marched in, planting her hands on the heavy mahogany desk.
"I need to go to the grocery store," she announced, her tone leaving no room for argument.
Damiano didn't even look up from his paperwork. "Give the list to Rafael. He will have it delivered in an hour."
"I don't want it delivered, Damiano," Elena sighed, rubbing her temples. "Mia wants to pick out her own fruit for her lunchbox. She is five. She needs to see the outside world. She needs to walk down a cereal aisle, not just wander around this fortress surrounded by men carrying assault rifles."
Damiano finally looked up. His dark eyes softened slightly at the sight of her, but his jaw remained stubbornly set. "It is a logistical nightmare, Elena. The Rossis are quiet for now, but quiet does not mean harmless. If you step out of this gate, I have to send three vehicles and ten men."
"Then send them!" Elena shot back, leaning closer. "I am not asking you to compromise our safety, Damiano. But I am asking you not to put us in a golden cage. If we stop living our lives, the other families have already won."
Damiano stared at her for a long, silent moment. He loved her fire. He loved that she was completely unintimidated by him. Slowly, he closed the ledger and stood up, walking around the desk until he was inches away from her.
"Ten men," he murmured, his voice a low, dangerous purr as his hands settled on her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. "And me. I drive."
Elena’s breath hitched as the familiar, intoxicating scent of sandalwood and danger wrapped around her. "The Capo dei Capi is going to push a shopping cart at Whole Foods?"
"If it keeps you smiling, mia regina (my queen)," Damiano whispered, claiming her lips in a deep, possessive kiss. "I would burn down the store if you asked."
The trip to the grocery store was nothing short of a spectacle. Shoppers stared in bewildered silence as the towering, terrifying mafia boss walked down the produce aisle, impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, pushing a silver cart while Mia happily tossed organic apples into the basket.
For a brief, shining hour, they were just a family. But as Elena bagged their groceries, a strange sensation prickled the back of her neck. The feeling of being watched. She glanced toward the front windows of the store. Through the rain-streaked glass, a shadow lingered—a man in a faded gray jacket, his face obscured by a baseball cap.
When Elena blinked, the man was gone.

"Everything alright?" Damiano asked, his hand instantly hovering over his concealed weapon, his predator instincts flaring.
"Yes," Elena lied quickly, forcing a smile. "Just tired. Let's go home."
