Dr. Cole looked older than Nora remembered.
But his eyes were the same.
Cold.
Controlled.
Unemotional.
Nora stared at him.
“You told me my daughter died.”
Cole said nothing.
“You looked me in the eyes.”
“You watched me fall apart.”
“I was following instructions.”
The words made Nora furious.
“Instructions?”
“You stole my daughter because someone told you to?”
Cole remained calm.
“You do not understand what happened.”
“No.”
Nora stepped forward.
“I understand perfectly.”
“You lied.”
“You changed records.”
“You erased a child.”
Cole looked at Emma.
“She was never supposed to survive.”
Nora moved closer.
“She is not a mistake.”
“She is my daughter.”
Cole sighed.
“You still believe everything is about you.”
Nora stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Cole looked at Ethan.
“Tell her.”
Nora turned.
Ethan looked away.
Her anger returned.
“What is he talking about?”
Ethan remained silent.
Nora’s voice became colder.
“You knew.”
Ethan whispered:
“I knew some of it.”
“How much?”
“Enough.”
Nora felt betrayed again.
Cole continued.
“Your daughter was born during a confidential medical program.”
Nora frowned.
“A program?”
“Research.”
“Medical tracking.”
“Genetic monitoring.”
Nora looked disgusted.
“She was a baby.”
Cole looked down.
“And that is why things went wrong.”
“What things?”
Cole did not answer.
Emma stepped closer to Nora.
The little girl was shaking.
“I remember Grandma crying.”
Everyone became silent.
Emma looked at Cole.
“She said she wanted to give me back.”

He looked afraid.
Nora noticed.
“Give her back to who?”
No answer.
Then Emma whispered:
“The person who paid for me.”
