Chapter 6 - The Name They Tried To Erase.

Chapter 6 - The Name They Tried To Erase.

Nora replayed Margaret’s words again and again.

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

The sentence refused to leave her mind.

Because it changed everything.

Margaret was not acting like someone who stole a child.

She was acting like someone who was afraid.

But afraid of what?

Nora sat in her car outside St. Catherine’s Hospital.

The building stood silently in front of her.

Six years of unanswered questions were trapped inside those walls.

She opened the glove compartment.

Inside was the only photograph she had left from the night her daughter was born.

A tiny hand.

A small blanket.

A silver heart necklace placed beside the baby.

Nora had brought the necklace because she believed every child deserved something that belonged only to them.

A connection.

A promise.

But after the hospital told her the baby was gone, the necklace became the only thing she had.

Until Emma appeared wearing the other half.

Nora drove to the address connected to Margaret Hale.

The house was old.

Quiet.

The curtains were closed.

The mailbox was empty.

Nobody answered.

But Nora noticed something.

A small pink ribbon caught on the fence.

The same color as Emma’s sweater.

Her heart started beating faster.

Someone had been there recently.

She walked around the side of the house.

A basement window was slightly open.

Inside, she saw boxes.

Old files.

Photographs.

Nora called the police.

But before they arrived, she entered.

The basement smelled like old paper and dust.

She opened the first box.

Inside were medical documents.

St. Catherine’s Hospital records.

Her hands began shaking.

Then she saw the name.

BENNETT, BABY GIRL.

Nora almost dropped the file.

She opened it.

The first page was missing.

The second page contained one sentence.

“Transferred under private authorization.”

Transferred.

Not deceased.

Not lost.

Transferred.

Nora felt sick.

Someone had changed her daughter’s entire life with one signature.

She searched through more papers.

Then she found a photograph.

A little girl.

Emma.

Sleeping in a hospital blanket.

The date was six years earlier.

The day after Nora was told her baby died.

A sound escaped Nora’s mouth.

A mixture of pain and disbelief.

Her daughter had been alive the entire time.

A floorboard moved behind her.

Nora turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Ethan.

His face was pale.

“Nora.”

She stepped back.

“You knew.”

Ethan looked at the documents.

Then at her.

“Yes.”

The word destroyed something inside her.

“You knew my daughter was alive.”

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“I knew she survived.”

Nora’s voice became colder.

“And you let me suffer.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“Protect me?”

She laughed bitterly.

“You watched me mourn a child who was alive.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“There were people who wanted her gone.”

“Who?”

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“People inside St. Catherine’s.”

Nora stared at him.

“What happened that night?”

Ethan looked toward the documents.

“Your daughter was born healthy.”

Nora stopped breathing.

“Then why did they tell me she died?”

Ethan looked away.

“Because someone needed a baby to disappear.”

The room became silent.

Nora felt the anger rising.

“Who?”

Before Ethan could answer...

A sound came from upstairs.

May you like

A door closing.

Someone was inside the house.
