Chapter 12 - The Man Who Owned The Secret.

Chapter 12 - The Man Who Owned The Secret.

The man standing in the doorway looked nothing like the monster Nora had imagined.
That was what frightened her most.
He looked ordinary.
A clean suit.
Calm expression.
A polite smile.
The kind of person strangers trusted immediately.
But everyone inside the room reacted as if danger had just entered.
Margaret stepped backward.
Emma moved closer to Nora.
Ethan’s entire body became tense.
Nora stared at the man.
“Who are you?”
The man smiled slightly.
“My name is Richard Vale.”
The name meant nothing to Nora.
But the way Dr. Cole looked at him told her everything.
This man was important.
“You destroyed my family.”
Richard tilted his head.
“I think you misunderstand what happened.”
Nora almost laughed.
“Six years ago, I was told my daughter died.”
“She was alive.”
“She was hidden.”
“She was taken away from me.”
Her voice became stronger.
“And you expect me to believe that was a misunderstanding?”
Richard looked at Emma.
“She was always meant to be protected.”
Nora moved in front of the girl.
“She is not a project.”
“She is not evidence.”
“She is my daughter.”
For the first time, Richard’s expression changed.
A small flash of irritation.
“You still believe love gives you ownership.”
Nora stared at him.
“No.”
“I believe being her mother means I protect her.”
Richard looked toward Margaret.
“You made this difficult.”
Margaret answered quietly.
“I did what was right.”
Richard shook his head.
“You ruined years of planning.”
Nora heard the words.
Planning.
Not accident.
Not mistake.
Planning.
“You planned this?”
Richard looked back at her.
“Your daughter’s life was changed because certain people needed certain outcomes.”
Nora felt disgust.
“A child’s life was an outcome?”
Richard said nothing.
Ethan stepped forward.
“You promised she would be safe.”
Richard looked at him.
“And you believed me.”
Ethan lowered his eyes.
Nora looked between them.
Another betrayal.
Another person who knew.
Another person who watched her suffer.
“How many people knew?”
Nobody answered.
That answer hurt the most.
Richard walked closer.
“Mrs. Bennett, you need to understand something.”
“You cannot undo six years.”
Nora held Emma’s hand.
“No.”
“But I can give her the next sixty.”
Richard watched her carefully.
Then he smiled.
“You still don’t understand the danger.”
Suddenly, the lights outside flashed.
Police vehicles appeared through the windows.
Richard’s expression changed.
For the first time...
He looked worried.
Margaret looked at Nora.
“You called someone?”
Nora shook her head.
“No.”
Then everyone looked at Ethan.
He held up his phone.
“I did.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“You betrayed me.”
Ethan answered:
May you like
“No.”
“I finally stopped betraying her.”
