The room became completely silent.

The answer terrified Nora more than a number.
Because it meant the truth was larger than she imagined.
Dr. Cole sat down.
For the first time, he looked defeated.
“The program was supposed to be medical research.”
Nora stared at him.
“Do not call it that.”
“She was a baby.”
Cole looked ashamed.
“You are right.”
“It became something else.”
Ethan looked at Nora.
“Your daughter was targeted because of the records connected to you.”
“What records?”
Margaret opened an old folder.
Inside were documents.
Names.
Dates.
Medical information.
Nora saw dozens of pages.
Dozens of children.
Her stomach turned.
“They changed identities.”
“They moved children.”
“They erased histories.”
Margaret’s voice broke.
“I found out too late.”
Nora looked at Emma.
“My daughter spent six years thinking someone else was her family.”
Margaret nodded.
“But she never forgot you.”
Emma looked at Nora.
“I remembered your song.”
Nora pulled her closer.
The lullaby.
The one thing nobody could erase.
A sound came from outside.

Someone was entering.

“You need to go.”
Nora looked at her.
“What about you?”
Margaret smiled sadly.
“I have been running for six years.”
“It is time I stopped.”
The door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Not Dr. Cole.
Not Ethan.
Someone Nora had never seen.
But everyone else reacted immediately.
Margaret went pale.
Cole looked terrified.
Ethan whispered:
“That’s him.”
