Nora thought she understood the truth.
She was wrong.
The investigation uncovered another secret.
Richard Vale was not the only person involved.

The detective returned with one final file.
“This was hidden for six years.”
Nora opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A hospital room.
The night Emma disappeared.
Nora stared.
Because standing beside the baby was someone she never expected.
Her own mother.
Nora’s breathing stopped.
“My mother?”
The detective nodded.
“She visited the hospital that night.”
Nora felt confused.
Her mother had always told her she knew nothing.
She had always comforted Nora.
She had always cried with her.

Nora found her mother’s address.
She needed answers.
When she arrived, the older woman was waiting.
As if she knew Nora would come.
“Nora.”
Her voice trembled.
“You know.”
Nora stared.
“How could you?”
Her mother looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Nora felt tears forming.
“Everyone says that.”
“Everyone says they were protecting me.”
“But nobody protected me from losing my daughter.”
Her mother cried quietly.
“I saw what they were going to do.”
“Then why didn’t you stop them?”
“Because I was afraid.”
The same answer.
Fear.
Everyone had been afraid.
But Nora had paid the price.
Her mother handed her an envelope.
“I kept this for six years.”
Inside was a letter.
A letter from the night Emma disappeared.
Nora opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
“Your daughter will return when the heart is complete.”
Nora touched her necklace.
The silver heart.
The missing half.
Emma’s necklace.
Together they formed one complete heart.
