Chapter 10 - The Person Behind The Name.

Chapter 10 - The Person Behind The Name.

The words stayed in Nora’s mind.
“The person who paid for me.”
Emma did not understand the meaning behind them.
She was only repeating what she had heard.
But Nora understood enough.
Someone had treated her daughter like something that could be bought.
Something that could be hidden.
Something that could be controlled.
Nora held Emma’s hand tighter.
No matter what happened next...
She would never let go again.
Dr. Cole looked toward the exit.
His confidence was disappearing.
“You need to leave.”
Nora stared at him.
“After everything you did?”
“I am trying to keep you alive.”
Nora almost laughed.
Everyone kept saying the same thing.
Protect.
Hide.
Forget.
Nobody ever asked what Nora wanted.
Nobody ever asked what Emma needed.
“You don’t get to decide what happens to us anymore.”
Dr. Cole looked at Ethan.
“You should have never brought her here.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“I didn’t.”
Cole’s expression changed.
Then everyone heard it.
A sound outside.
Cars arriving.
Multiple doors closing.
Nora looked toward the window.
Several vehicles had stopped outside the building.
Emma grabbed Nora’s hand.
“Are they here?”
Nora looked down.
“Who?”
Emma whispered:
“The people Grandma was afraid of.”
The lights inside the building suddenly went dark.
The room disappeared into darkness.
Nora pulled Emma close.
Ethan moved toward the door.
“Stay behind me.”
Nora looked at him.
“You already failed once.”
The words hurt him.
Because they were true.
Footsteps approached from the hallway.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone entered.
A woman’s voice echoed through the darkness.
“Adrian.”
Dr. Cole closed his eyes.
He knew that voice.
Nora felt Emma freeze.
The little girl whispered:
“Grandma.”
The lights returned.
Margaret Hale stood in the doorway.
But this time, she was not wearing a disguise.
No sunglasses.
No cold expression.
Only exhaustion.
And sadness.
Nora stared at her.
“You.”
Margaret looked at Emma.
Then at Nora.
“I knew this day would come.”
Nora stepped forward.
“You took my daughter.”
Margaret’s eyes filled with pain.
“No.”
“I saved her.”
Nora’s voice became sharper.
“You kept her from me.”
Margaret lowered her head.
“Yes.”
The honesty shocked Nora.
“Why?”
Margaret looked at Emma.
“Because six years ago, I saw what they were going to do.”
“Who?”
Margaret looked at Dr. Cole.
“And the people above him.”
The room became silent.
Nora felt a cold feeling.
“There are more people?”
Margaret nodded.
“People with money.”
“People with power.”
“People who believed they could erase anyone who stood in their way.”
Nora looked at Emma.
“And my daughter?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“She was the one thing they could not control.”
Emma looked confused.
“Why me?”
Margaret walked closer.
“Because your mother refused to sign something.”
Nora froze.
“What are you talking about?”
Margaret looked at her.
“Six years ago, before your daughter was born, St. Catherine’s asked you to join a private program.”
Nora remembered.
A stack of papers.
A conversation she thought was about routine medical care.
She had refused.
She remembered saying:
“My child is not a file.”
Margaret nodded.
“You were the only mother who said no.”
Nora felt sick.
“And because of that?”
Margaret whispered:
“They wanted your daughter removed from your life.”
Silence filled the room.
Nora looked at Ethan.
“You knew about this.”
Ethan lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Her heart broke again.
“You let them do it.”
“I tried to stop them.”
“But I failed.”
Margaret looked toward the door.
Her face suddenly changed.
Fear returned.
“They found us.”
A loud sound came from outside.
Everyone froze.
Margaret grabbed Emma’s hand.
“Now you need to know the truth.”
Nora stepped forward.
“What truth?”
Margaret looked directly into her eyes.
“The night your daughter disappeared...”
“She was never the only child taken.”
Nora felt her blood turn cold.
“What does that mean?”
May you like
Margaret whispered:
“Your baby was part of something much bigger.”
