Chapter 7: The Viper's Alliance

The rain poured heavily outside the Starlight Motor Inn, matching Madison's foul mood. Victoria had left hours ago, slipping into a cheap taxi with a single duffel bag, muttering something about a contact in Mexico who owed her a favor. She had abandoned her own daughter to save herself.

Madison was entirely alone, staring at the ceiling, when a sharp knock echoed through the flimsy door.

She jumped, her heart pounding. Had the FBI found them already? She crept to the peephole and peered out. Standing in the rain was a tall, sharp-featured man in a tailored charcoal suit, holding a massive black umbrella. He looked entirely out of place in the rundown motel.

Hesitantly, she unlocked the deadbolt.

"Madison Harrington," the man said, his voice smooth and cold. "What a tragic fall from grace."

"Who are you?" she demanded, crossing her arms to hide her trembling hands.

"My name is Julian Thorne," he replied, stepping into the room uninvited and closing the door behind him. "I am the CEO of Thorne Global, Harrington Industries' largest competitor. And, incidentally, an old enemy of your late father."

Madison’s eyes narrowed. "If you’re here to gloat, get out."

Julian chuckled, a dry, mirthless sound. "I am not here to gloat. I am here to offer you a mutually beneficial arrangement. I despise Emily Harrington just as much as you do. Her mother, Clara, humiliated me academically twenty years ago. Her father outmaneuvered me in business ten years ago. I refuse to let their bastard child ruin my monopoly now."

"What do you want from me?" Madison asked, her greed momentarily overriding her fear.

"Revenge, my dear," Julian purred, pulling a thick envelope from his breast pocket and tossing it onto the stained mattress. It landed with a heavy thud. Stacks of hundred-dollar bills spilled out. "Inside is fifty thousand dollars in cash. Enough to get you out of this dump and into a respectable hotel."

Madison stared at the money, her breath catching in her throat. "And in exchange?"

"Next Friday is the Project Apex launch gala. It is an exclusive, highly secured event," Julian explained, his eyes glinting with malice. "As a former Harrington, your biometric data is still in their legacy security system. I need you to grant one of my operatives access to the server room during the party."

"You want to sabotage the launch," Madison realized, a wicked smile slowly spreading across her face.

"I want to humiliate her," Julian corrected. "I want to show the world that Emily Harrington is an incompetent fraud. Once the company's stock tanks, I will buy it for pennies on the dollar. And you, Madison, will be rewarded with a very generous consulting fee. Enough to live in luxury for the rest of your life."

Madison reached out and grabbed the stack of bills, clutching them to her chest. "Tell me exactly what I need to do."
