Chapter 10: Checkmate

The lights in the ballroom dimmed. A dramatic hush fell over the audience as a massive holographic screen flickered to life behind the stage. I stepped up to the acrylic podium, the crimson fabric of my dress catching the spotlight.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I began, my voice echoing clearly through the microphone. "For twenty years, Harrington Industries has pushed the boundaries of technology. But today, we do not just push a boundary. We break it. I present to you: Project Apex."

The crowd erupted in applause as the holographic display showed the sleek, revolutionary design of the microchip.

In the front row, Julian Thorne sat with his arms crossed, a wicked smirk playing on his lips. Beside him, Madison looked like she was ready to pop champagne.

"To prove the unprecedented processing power of Apex, we will now run a live quantum decryption simulation—a task that would melt any standard processor on the market," I announced.

I pressed the silver button on the podium.

On the screen, a massive progress bar appeared. 10%... 30%... 60%...

The processing speed was terrifyingly fast. The numbers blurred. But as it hit 85%, I saw Julian lean forward. He was waiting for the spark. He was waiting for the thermal overload. He was waiting for my empire to burn.

90%... 95%... 100%.

Simulation Complete. Core Temperature: Optimal.

The massive screen flashed bright green. The room erupted into a deafening standing ovation. Investors leaped to their feet, cheering wildly.

Julian Thorne’s face drained of all color. He stared at the screen in absolute horror. "Impossible," he mouthed.

Madison grabbed his arm. "What happened? You said it would explode! You promised me!"

I stepped down from the podium and walked slowly toward the front row. The applause began to die down as the crowd noticed the intense, predatory focus in my eyes.

"Looking for a fire, Mr. Thorne?" I asked, my voice ringing out clearly in the now-quiet room.

Julian stood up, his fists clenched. "You... you altered the code."

"I fixed the code," I corrected sharply. "The code your corporate spy inserted into our servers three days ago. The same spy who is currently being handcuffed by federal agents in our basement server room."

Madison shrieked and took a step back, trying to distance herself from Julian.

"And," I continued, turning a lethal gaze toward my adoptive sister, "we have the security footage of Madison Harrington using her legacy biometric scan to let that spy into the building."

The crowd gasped. Camera flashes exploded, bathing Madison and Julian in a blinding, humiliating light.

"No!" Madison cried, tears ruining her makeup for the second time that week. "Julian made me do it! He paid me!"

"Shut up, you idiot!" Julian snarled, trying to push past the crowd toward the exit.

But Arthur was already standing at the end of the aisle, flanked by three uniformed police officers.

"Mr. Thorne, Miss Harrington," one of the officers said, stepping forward with handcuffs glinting in the chandelier light. "You are both under arrest for corporate espionage, breaking and entering, and conspiracy to commit fraud."

As the officers clicked the cuffs onto Madison's wrists, she looked back at me, her eyes wide with total, shattering defeat. She wasn't just broke anymore. She was a criminal.

I turned my back on her screams, facing the blinding flashes of the cameras. I raised my chin, staring into the lenses that would broadcast my victory to the world. Clara's legacy was safe, and the throne was finally, undeniably, mine.
