Chapter 12: The Hunt for Victoria

The dust whipped across the cracked tarmac of the abandoned Nevada airstrip. Inside a rusted, corrugated metal hangar, Victoria Harrington paced like a caged tiger.
She looked entirely unrecognizable from the polished, terrifying socialite she had been just a week ago. Her designer suit was stained with sweat and dirt. Her perfectly coiffed hair was tied back in a messy, greasy knot. She clutched a leather satchel to her chest like a lifeline. Inside were her passports, the last of her stolen jewels, and a burner phone.
"Where is the plane?" Victoria hissed at the burly, tattooed smuggler leaning against a stack of wooden crates. "I paid you fifty thousand dollars upfront! I was supposed to be in San Miguel three hours ago!"
The smuggler picked at his nails with a combat knife. "Pilot got delayed, lady. Keep your shirt on. The feds ain't tracking you out here in the middle of nowhere."
Victoria's burner phone suddenly vibrated in her pocket. She snatched it out, her heart hammering against her ribs. The caller ID was a scrambled international number.
"Carlos?" she answered, her voice trembling with desperate relief. "Carlos, is that you? Listen to me, I need you to wire the remaining two million from the Cayman account into the new routing number I sent you. I had a slight delay, but I'm on my way."
There was a long, static-filled pause on the other end of the line.
Then, a voice spoke. But it wasn't Carlos.
"I'm afraid Carlos is currently in federal custody in Mexico City, Victoria."
Victoria froze. The phone nearly slipped from her sweaty grip. "Emily?" she breathed, her eyes widening in absolute terror.
I was sitting in my father's leather chair in the penthouse of Harrington Industries, staring at a digital map tracking her exact burner phone signal.
"The FBI coordinated with international authorities this morning," I told her, my voice perfectly calm, contrasting with her rising panic. "When Madison gave us your destination, checking the historical flight logs for private charters out of Nevada was child's play. We traced the money, Victoria. Every single cent."
"You... you little bitch," Victoria snarled, spitting venom into the receiver. "I built you! I gave you a roof over your head!"
"You stole my mother's life," I replied, the anger finally bleeding through my composure. "And then you tried to steal mine. The Cayman accounts are frozen, Victoria. The jewels in your bag have been flagged by Interpol. You have absolutely nothing left."
"I am a survivor!" Victoria screamed, sprinting toward the hangar doors. "You will never catch me! I will disappear!"
"Look outside, Victoria."
Victoria pushed the heavy metal door of the hangar open, stepping out into the blinding Nevada sun.
She dropped the phone.
Surrounding the hangar in a tight, impenetrable perimeter were six black SUVs. Heavily armed federal agents poured out of the vehicles, their weapons drawn and trained directly on her chest. A helicopter chopped through the air overhead, kicking up a massive cloud of dust.

"Victoria Harrington!" a voice boomed over a megaphone. "Drop the bag and put your hands on your head! You are under arrest!"
Through the dropped phone lying in the dirt, I heard the satisfying thud of Victoria falling to her knees.
