Chapter 11: The Interrogation Room

The cold, fluorescent lights of the downtown precinct buzzed with a low, maddening hum. The interrogation room smelled of stale coffee, industrial bleach, and raw desperation.

Madison Harrington sat at the metal table, her wrists handcuffed to the center ring. Her scandalous black designer dress, which had looked so venomous at the gala, now just looked cheap and pathetic under the harsh lighting. Her mascara had run down her cheeks in thick, inky tracks, staining her pale skin.

For the fifth time in an hour, she screamed at the two-way mirror.

"I demand my phone call! I am a Harrington! My mother will sue this entire department into the ground! Do you hear me? I want a lawyer!"

The heavy metal door clicked open. But it wasn’t a detective who walked in.

I stepped into the freezing room, wrapped in a camel-hair trench coat, a steaming cup of artisan tea in my hand. Arthur followed closely behind me, standing by the door like a silent, immovable sentinel.

Madison stared at me, her mouth dropping open. "You. What are you doing here? Did you come to gloat?"

"I came to see if you were ready to wake up from your delusion, Madison," I said, pulling out the metal chair opposite her and sitting down. "I just spoke with the District Attorney. Julian Thorne has already flipped on you. He told them the entire sabotage plot was your idea. He claims you approached him in a desperate bid for cash."

"That’s a lie!" Madison shrieked, rattling her handcuffs. "He came to my motel! He gave me fifty thousand dollars in a manila envelope! He planned the whole thing!"

"And where is that money now?" I asked calmly, taking a slow sip of my tea.

Madison’s face crumpled. "The... the police confiscated it as evidence."

"So, Julian is a respected, billionaire CEO with a team of thirty ruthless defense attorneys. You are a broke teenager sleeping in a motel, caught on 4K security footage letting a corporate spy into my building." I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table. "Who do you think the jury is going to believe, Madison?"

She stopped screaming. The blood drained from her face as the full weight of her reality finally crashed down upon her. She wasn't untouchable. She was the scapegoat.

"Twenty years," I said softly, letting the words hang in the freezing air. "That’s the maximum federal sentence for corporate espionage resulting in financial damage to a publicly traded company. You’ll be thirty-eight when you get out."

Madison burst into ugly, hyperventilating sobs. "Please, Emily! Please! I’ll do anything! I’ll publicly apologize! I’ll scrub toilets at the office! Just tell them to drop the charges! We're sisters!"

"We were never sisters," I corrected her, my voice turning into ice. "But I will make you a deal. I will tell the DA to offer you a plea bargain. A reduced sentence in a minimum-security facility. Five years instead of twenty."

Madison sniffled, looking up with a pathetic glimmer of hope. "Anything. What do you want?"

"Victoria," I said, my eyes locking onto hers. "She fled before the FBI could freeze her hidden offshore accounts. She has a head start. Tell me where she is."

Madison hesitated, the ingrained fear of her mother warring with her own self-preservation. "She didn't tell me where she was going. She just... she abandoned me."

"Think harder, Madison," I warned, standing up. "Or enjoy the next two decades in federal prison."

"Wait!" Madison cried out as I turned toward the door. "She mentioned a favor! A man named Carlos in San Miguel! He owes her from when she helped him launder money through Harrington's shell corporations ten years ago! She said she was taking a private charter out of a small airstrip in Nevada to meet him!"

I paused, looking back at her over my shoulder. "San Miguel."

"Yes! Please, Emily, that's all I know!"

I nodded to Arthur, who immediately pulled a sleek black phone from his pocket and began dialing the FBI lead investigator.

"Enjoy the plea deal, Madison," I said, stepping out into the hallway. "I'd suggest getting comfortable in orange."
