Chapter 18: The Sins of the Father

The forty-eight-hour deadline was ticking down like a time bomb. I hadn't slept. The estate was locked down tightly, patrolled by elite private military contractors Arthur had called in from his old network.

But Silas didn't attack the estate. He attacked where we were most vulnerable.

It was 9:00 PM when my phone rang. The caller ID was Daniel Whitmore.

"Daniel, have you finalized the legal traps we discussed?" I answered, rubbing my temples.

"I'm afraid Mr. Whitmore is currently indisposed," Silas Vance's voice replied.

My blood turned to ice. "Where is he?"

"Daniel is a creature of habit, Emily. He always leaves his downtown office at exactly 8:30 PM and walks to his favorite steakhouse. It was painfully easy to intercept him," Silas mocked softly. "He’s currently enjoying my hospitality at a private, secure location."

"If you touch him, Silas, I swear to God—"

"Save the dramatic threats for the boardroom, CEO," Silas interrupted. "Here are my terms. Tomorrow night at midnight, you will come alone to the abandoned shipyard on Pier 44. You will bring a physical, encrypted master drive containing the unredacted source code for Project Apex. You will sign the transfer documents. If you bring the police, or if you bring Arthur, Daniel Whitmore will be fed to the harbor in a very small, very heavy box."

The line clicked dead.

I threw the phone against the wall, shattering the screen.

"Miss Emily!" Arthur rushed into the study, his hand resting on his holstered weapon. "What happened?"

"He took Daniel," I choked out, the reality of the situation suffocating me. Daniel Whitmore had been my father's best friend. He had stood by me when I exposed Victoria. He was the grandfather I never had.

Arthur’s face hardened into a mask of pure, lethal professionalism. "We will find him. I have contacts in the city’s surveillance grid. We can track Silas's vehicles."

"No," I said, staring at the shattered pieces of my phone on the rug. A radical, dangerous plan was forming in my mind. "Silas expects us to panic. He expects me to choose between Daniel's life and the company. He thinks because I am eighteen, I will fold under emotional pressure."

I walked over to my desk and opened a hidden compartment. Inside was a sleek, titanium USB drive. It contained the entire architecture of Project Apex. It was worth billions.

"Miss Emily, you cannot hand that over to Obsidian," Arthur warned. "With that technology, they will become untouchable."

"I'm not going to hand over our future, Arthur," I said, looking up with a cold, terrifying smile. "I'm going to hand over a Trojan horse. Silas wants the Apex code? I'll give it to him. But I’m going to modify the architecture. When he plugs this drive into Obsidian’s mainframe to verify the data, the chip won't just overheat like the last one."

Arthur raised an eyebrow. "What will it do?"

"It will initiate a massive, untraceable data-siphon protocol. It will use Apex’s quantum processing power to bypass all of Obsidian’s firewalls. It will download every single encrypted ledger, every offshore account number, every cartel payoff, and every government bribe Silas Vance has ever orchestrated."

"And then?"

"And then," I whispered, "it will automatically email all of it to the Director of the FBI, the NSA, and every major news outlet in the country. Silas wants to play in the dark? We’re going to turn on the lights."
