CHAPTER 6 The Secret Maya Never Told Ryan

CHAPTER 6 The Secret Maya Never Told Ryan

The envelope felt heavier than it should have.

Ryan Whitmore stood in the middle of his father's study, holding a small piece of paper that had the power to change everything again.

He had already learned more in one night than he had in an entire lifetime.

His mother had lied.

She had manipulated.

She had secretly planned to remove Maya from his life.

But now there was something else.

Something about Maya.

Something Evelyn had been saving.

A secret.

Ryan looked at his wife.

Maya's face had lost all color.

She knew.

Before he even opened the envelope...

She knew.

"Maya."

His voice was quiet.

"What is this?"

She looked down.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

And that silence scared him.

Because Maya had never been afraid of the truth.

Not once.

But now...

She looked terrified.

Evelyn noticed.

And for the first time that day, a small smile appeared on her face.

Not because she was happy.

Because she believed she finally had control again.

"I told you."

Evelyn whispered.

"Everyone has secrets."

Ryan turned toward his mother.

"Did you know about this?"

Evelyn didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Her expression said enough.

Ryan looked back at Maya.

"What is inside?"

Maya closed her eyes.

A tear slowly rolled down her cheek.

"I wanted to tell you."

Ryan's heart tightened.

"But you didn't."

Maya looked at him.

"I was scared."

Those words stopped him.

Because Maya was many things.

Strong.

Determined.

Protective.

But scared?

That was something he rarely heard from her.

"Scared of what?"

Maya looked at Evelyn.

"Of losing everything."

The room became silent.

Ryan slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a newspaper article.

An old one.

The headline immediately caught his attention.

"Local Woman Faces Lawsuit After Family Business Collapse."

Ryan frowned.

He looked at the picture.

It was Maya.

Younger.

Different.

But unmistakably her.

His eyes moved across the article.

Years ago, before he met her...

Maya's family had been involved in a business dispute.

A company failure.

A lawsuit.

Public criticism.

People had blamed her family.

Ryan looked confused.

"I don't understand."

Maya sat down.

"I was nineteen."

Her voice was quiet.

"My father owned a small company."

Ryan listened.

"He made a mistake."

She looked at the floor.

"Not a criminal mistake."

"A business mistake."

"The company collapsed."

Ryan nodded slowly.

"Okay."

Maya looked surprised.

"Okay?"

He looked at her.

"Yes."

She shook her head.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain it."

Maya took a deep breath.

"My family lost everything."

She paused.

"My father lost his reputation."

"My mother became sick from the stress."

"And everyone around us treated us like we were failures."

Ryan watched her carefully.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Maya looked away.

"Because when I met you, I wanted you to see me."

"Not my family's mistakes."

Ryan felt a painful realization.

She wasn't hiding something because she was guilty.

She was hiding something because she was ashamed.

Two very different things.

But Evelyn had turned that shame into a weapon.

Ryan looked at his mother.

"You used this."

Evelyn remained silent.

"You found this information and used it against her."

Evelyn finally spoke.

"I was trying to protect you."

Ryan shook his head.

"No."

His voice became firm.

"You were looking for something you could use."

Evelyn's expression hardened.

"Maya was never honest with you."

Maya stood.

"I was going to tell him."

"When?"

The question came from Evelyn.

Cold.

Sharp.

"When he discovered the truth himself?"

Maya looked hurt.

"I was waiting for the right time."

Evelyn laughed quietly.

"The right time."

She looked at Ryan.

"That's what people say when they know they are hiding something."

Ryan looked between them.

And for a moment...

He understood something important.

Both women had secrets.

But they were not the same.

One woman hid pain.

The other woman used pain as a weapon.

Ryan turned to Maya.

"Why did you think I wouldn't understand?"

Maya looked at him.

"Because your family has always been perfect."

Ryan frowned.

"What?"

"Your family name."

She looked around the room.

"This house."

"The reputation."

"Everything about the Whitmores."

She swallowed.

"I thought if you knew where I came from, you would see me differently."

Ryan walked closer.

"Maya."

She looked up.

"You are not your family's mistakes."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You don't know that."

"Yes, I do."

Ryan sat beside her.

"Because I know who you are."

For a moment...

Neither of them spoke.

Then Evelyn interrupted.

"Beautiful."

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

"The two of you comforting each other."

Her voice became bitter.

"But you still don't know everything."

Ryan slowly stood.

"What now?"

Evelyn looked directly at Maya.

"Tell him."

Maya froze.

Ryan looked confused.

"Tell me what?"

Evelyn smiled.

"Tell him why your family really lost the company."

Maya's face changed.

Not fear.

Pain.

"Evelyn..."

"No."

Evelyn stepped forward.

"You have spent years pretending you are innocent."

Ryan looked at Maya.

"Maya?"

She looked away.

And that was when Ryan knew.

There was another layer.

Another secret.

But before Evelyn could continue, Maya spoke.

"My father wasn't the only person responsible."

Ryan waited.

"My family had a partner."

"Someone who handled the financial decisions."

"Someone who disappeared when everything collapsed."

Ryan frowned.

"Who?"

Maya looked at Evelyn.

And the answer hit him before she even said it.

"Your father."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Ryan stared at her.

"What?"

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

"I found out years later."

"Your father was connected to my family's company."

Evelyn looked shocked.

Not because she didn't know.

Because she knew Ryan was finding out.

Ryan turned toward his mother.

"Did you know?"

Evelyn said nothing.

And once again...

Her silence became the answer.

Ryan stepped back.

His entire world shifted.

His father's name.

His mother's secrets.

Maya's hidden past.

Everything was connected.

The Whitmore family had not simply attacked Maya.

They had history with her.

A history nobody wanted revealed.

Ryan looked at the people standing in front of him.

The woman he loved.

The woman who raised him.

And the truth between them.

Then his phone rang.

The number was unknown.

Ryan answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Ryan Whitmore?"

"Yes."

"You need to know the truth about what happened to Maya's family."

Ryan froze.

"Who is this?"

The voice became quieter.

"Someone who knows your mother wasn't the only person hiding secrets."

The call ended.

Ryan stared at the phone.

Because now he understood.

Evelyn's plan wasn't the beginning of the story.

It was only one chapter.

May you like

And the real secret...

Was buried years before Maya ever entered the Whitmore family.
